In fairness, sometimes it really is the best choice. Here's a good-quality metal gas can, price: $85. In comparison, here's a plastic 5 gallon gas can, price: $24.
How often do you really need a gas can? I suspect most people are just buying it for a one-time use, then tossing it in the garage until it eventually gets thrown out. And you can do that three times with the plastic one before you're even in danger of meeting the price of the expensive one. If I continue to use gas cans at my current rate, I'll be using my fourth somewhere around my 150th birthday.
If you're using gas cans all the time then yeah, get the nice one, but sometimes the cheap one really is the right choice.
