So I have one of these
And it contains all my old stuff.
I have a gaming pc with a SSD and I’m pretty sure my Mac has a SSD but I cheaped out on the hard drive
Basically I deleted a few files from it (bank information, social security, photos etc. I don’t want even a fraction of a possibility that someone might recover these deleted files)
So a simple 1 pass overwrite with 0s should do the trick?
Yeah I never used the EaseUS program just used that website to see if it had any info on what I could do. I believe when I tried to do anything with the cmdprompt it didn't let me anyway, or gave me some error as to why it couldn't do what I asked it to. I will have to double check but I believe my model # is "WDBBEP0010BBK-04". I dont have the drive on me right now as I'm at work, but will run the DMDE Smart report and double check that model number for you when I get home later today.
edit: Here is an Amazon link to what I believe to be my exact harddrive
Can the 1TB hard drive be a portable USB 3.0 one? If so I got a Passport Ultra Black 1TB Portable USB 3.0 Drive Link that has some light scratches on the top cover but works flawlessly. Comes with it's original microUSB 3.0 cable. Shipped for only $30.
If you do decide to go external hdd, I'd recommend a My Passport Ultra as that's the one I was using for game storage on my wii u and I never ran into any problems. It did require a usb y-cable though, as just the one usb cable that came included wasn't enough to power it. I bought 1tb since I went mostly digital, but I think there are some 500gig models out there if you don't wanna overdo it with storage space. Otherwise, you can grab a 1tb since they're not too expensive and you can always re-use the hdd for other things in the future. I'll leave a link for a similar model to the one I bought. Enjoy the great catalogue the wii u has to offer and happy gaming.

Oh man I guess not everything needs blazing speeds, and come to think of it I have a 1tb external hd
Would this be A) possible to keep inside my tower and B) appropriate to keep as a full time connected storage?
Man that looks really good but regarding the hard drive edit I have another question. I have an external 1TB hard drive because when I did the RMA it required a backup ( it looks like this one https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Ultra-Portable-External/dp/B00W8XXRPM) and I am wondering if I could use that with that cheaper version and have the same amount of storage as the middle priced one? I do understand that it is external and will take up a USB port but I think I could make it work.
Save ~$40 and get 4x the storage. This is the one I use for Battlefront and some other games, it's great!
well I bought a western digital portable drive and it came pre-installed and I do like my security and so yea for convenience (link to drive https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W8XXRPM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) also I kept hard copies and I can't get in trouble for anything that they say because they don't have proof of anything and even at that point I'm prepared for getting in trouble for disobeying staff
How many files are you looking to back up?
If it's not too much, you can just burn a DVD.
If it's too much for a DVD or two, I suggest buying an external drive. They're cheap these days.
I don't recommend using a separate partition, as you often need to remove all the previous Windows partitions in order to reinstall.
Thank you for checking it out
This was one of the best investments I made:
I'll film the whole day and transfer it from my devices to the external HD. It frees up a lot of room on your computer and when your ready to edit the clips, offload it from the HD. 1 TB for $60 is well worth it.
Any external drive you can just plug in and use. I have a WD one that came with some software and I literally just deleted it. It doesnt do anything but make it seem prettier. And it still works. The same with a seagate one that I had.
ok one more thing :P Do you think I could use this WD My Passport Ultra external drive for 2 purpose.
1 - I'd use it as a normal backup drive, with the bundled software to backup specific folders on my computer (not necessarily related to lightroom / photo files)
2 - I'd have another folder that i'd use with FreeFileSync specifically for keeping lightroom catalogs and my photos in sync between my desktop and laptop.
Oh look, another shit-tier question posted to r/sysadmin! We can't answer this without a lot more information and it's obvious that you've done no research at all to even attempt to figure the answer out for yourself.
What kind of content, how many workstations, how many users, what kind of geographic layout (one facility, multiple?), how critical is the data, what kind of budget are you working with, do you have access to a controlled environment for server hardware (e.g. are you sitting on top of a data center or are you trying to jam this into a broom closet), do you have competent personnel to manage the system, how often do you need to access the data stored?
Without answers to those questions, the best recommendation I can give you is to buy this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W8XXRPM?keywords=external%20hard%20drive&qid=1450211393&ref_=sr_1_2&s=pc&sr=1-2
Does it need to be a flashdrive? because you can get an external hard drive with an usb 3.0 connector for a reasonable price.
Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-WDBGPU0010BBK-NESN/dp/B00W8XXRPM/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1441641385&sr=1-3&keywords=wd+external+hard+drive (just an example, you can use any other)
I'm a computer tech. I can help you find the right laptop if you want me to. First, some good brands of laptops to check out are Lenovo, Asus, MSI, Toshiba, and HP (I made sure to include all Canadian links). Make sure to avoid Acer and Dell like the plague. I'll be honest, for what you want, you should raise your budget, especially since you said you could spend $1500 on an iMac. With your current budget, you're most likely looking at refurbished laptops. If you raise your budget, it would be much easier for me to find some new laptops for you. Apple devices are way overpriced so you would get the same parts for about half the price on a PC. I know there's a difference between U.S. and Canadian dollars and $500 Canadian dollars is only equal to $373 US dollars. Here in the U.S., I would advise anyone to raise their budget to around $500-600 US dollars for halfway decent laptop that should last for at least 4-5+ years, so in Canadian dollars that would be between about $670-800 CAD. For between $700-800 CAD, you would be able to get a laptop that would be decent and last for a while, instead of needing to replace or upgrade parts in a year from now. I live in the U.S. so I'm not sure what computer or electronics stores are in Canada. Where do you live? What electronics stores are in Canada? Do you prefer to buy online or in store? If you want to get a laptop that will last for a bit, you really want to get an Intel i5 CPU and 8 GB of RAM. I'm not sure how much storage you want, but many laptops have either an HDD, SSD, or a combination. How much storage space do you think you need? If you don't need a ton, you're better off getting a laptop with a 240-320 GB SSD, as they're much faster but have much less storage and are more expensive. If you use a lot of programs, download a lot of movies, games, pictures, or things like that, you may be better off sticking with a 500+ GB HDD or SSHD combo. You can also get and should get an external hard drive to backup your computer at least every week. I would recommend getting a WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB for $69 CAD to backup your laptop data. Also, you mentioned wanting a laptop with an SD card reader for storage. Do you have a digital camera? I hope you know that SD cards are for digital cameras, not for computer storage. Some computers have SD card readers so people can quickly upload their pictures/video from their digital camera to their computer, but you can always buy an SD card reader for $15-20 if you want. For computer storage, your internal options are HDD, SSD, or SSHD, your external options are an external HDD or a USB/Flash drive. Please let me know what you want to do and if you want to raise your budget or not and if you're comfortable purchasing a refurbished laptop or not.
Here are some laptops I would recommend...

I use the old style Western Digital My Passport for my external drives. It’s USB-C (not Thunderbolt). Pretty inexpensive. Actual Thunderbolt drives tend to be pricier.
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Ultra-Portable-External/dp/B00W8XXRPM
You can get a 1tb external HDD for less than $100 easily.
$55 Western Digital 1 TB External drive.
Wouldn't any portable hard drive be classified as a U Disk then? They have platters instead of flash storage as far as I know.
Would this storage drive work for a PC as a second SSD? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W8XXRPM/ref=psdc_595048_t1_B00E83X9P8
You can get a refurbished MacBook Air and DisplayPort adapter cable so you can use a bigger monitor. Cheapest with an i5 is about 300-400 on ebay. Although not sure how much you can fit on a 64GB SSD. Get an external.
MacBook Air i5 $375- http://www.ebay.com/itm/331715912156
MDP to HDMI Cable $6.50 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/272090356887
Acer 24" Monitor $110 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/311520445672
1TB External HDD - $60 - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W8XXRPM
Total $551.50
I would recommend this one. They're relatively cheap and go on sale often.
This one is great. WD is a reputable brand and has pretty awesome warranty services.

If you care about speed get a 7200 rpm External Hardrive. This video shows a 7200rpm harddrive (same speed you would get with the elite) vs the original Xbox one hardrive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uYjxI7RZnw If you decide that you only want more storage and speed isn't a factor then this is a popular choice http://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Ultra-Portable-External/dp/B00W8XXRPM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446604714&sr=8-1&keywords=wd+external+hardrive ( I have the same one and I've had no problems with it)
I wouldn't recommend an SSD for backup. The drives are expensive and if you want to put alot of data on there, it'll fill up quick.
Does the backup need to be portable or will you leave it at home?
If you need to carry it with you I would recommend a Wesrern Digital Passport drive. At least 1 TB, but they make them with 2.
If you are leaving it at home, I would get a desktop model:
More storage then you should need, and its a good thing!
I usually keep entire system images on my drives. This way if my laptop's HD dies, I just drop a new drive in, copy the image over, and its like nothing even happened.
Here it is. They make a bunch. WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB Portable External Hard Drive, Black (2015) (WDBGPU0010BBK-NESN) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W8XXRPM/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_aJlbwbWTG00NG
Depending on your space needs.
Backup everything on your computer - do you have everything backed up on Time Machine? If not, purchase an external hard drive like this one that's at least the size of your current HD and follow these instructions on setting up Time Machine.
Reinstall OS X - to give you better instructions, please give us more information about your Mac. Specifically, please follow #3 on the sidebar (Specific Mac model, version of Mac OS X)
I'd recommend double checking that you don't actually already have the 64bit version installed. The 32bit version seems very strange if you have 8GB RAM, since it can't use half of it.
Assuming you have the 32-bit version (which, again, would be weird), I'd wipe and replace. Since OP says he's not too too good with computers, here's step by step:
Buy yourself an external hard drive from wherever you want. Here's a fairly cheap one you could pick.
Plug that drive into your system and make a copy of your profile. The basics are: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Music, Pictures, Video. I generally don't bother with much else.
Install Windows 7x64 cleanly, wiping out your entire hard drive and starting over from fresh. This isn't a bad practice anyway, every few years.
Install your programs you want and copy your data back over to your new profile.
Update to Windows 10 when it comes out.
Remember that now that you have a backup of you data, make a new backup of that data by copying over to that external drive every Sunday (or whatever day/schedule you want) to make sure you have a backup in case your hard drive crashes.
If you want to get serious about data backups, there are cloud services, or even additional external drives and cheap safe-deposit boxes at the bank to store them off-site in case of theft or fire.
Good luck, OP!
It's working just fine for me with a Y cable and this hard drive.
No, you need a USB external hard drive. The one you linked is for pc's. Here is the one I use
