Are you unaware of the whole Judith Miller thing? That's a very specific example of how the paper operated as American propaganda and sold an obviously piece of fake news, namely the idea that Iraq had WMDs.

There is an absolute boatload of academic material on how the NY Times acts as a propaganda outlet for US foreign policy and the invasion of Iraq is a typical case study.
