I'd consider picking up the book Web Marketing for Dummies, the Dummies books in general are concise and helpful for getting acquainted with something new that you might not yet want to fully commit yourself to. You can probably request a copy from a local public library, also you can find it online and purchase a PDF or paper copy. It goes over the various buzzwords and jargon and gets you familiar with a lot of the basic concepts and strategies.
There's some solid advice to be found in affiliate marketing forums, particularly in learning from the mistakes others have made in the process. Also in many of these you'll find topics pinned that help newbies get started.
One other method I've used successfully here on Reddit, which you can do easily and free, is to sign up with Amazon Associates. Say someone on Reddit asks people what movies they watch; rather than simply posting movie names you enjoy, you can create links to Amazon with your referral code embedded; thereafter, if people click on the link and have cookies enabled on their browser, any purchase they make subsequent to that gets associated with your tag and you earn a commission. For example, in one thread someone was asking about security cameras, and I posted one I purchased which happens to be on Amazon, the Sharx SCNC2606. I gave a mini-review of my experiences with it, and openly and honestly said I really like the product which is plainly the truth. Later that day I saw I'd earned a $12.11 commission from the sale of a similar camera; the selling price was $302.77 and I got a 4% commission for the sale, woohoo! Granted, the commission percentage starts out small, like that 4%, but varies depending on the types of products, and as the volume of sales increases it'll go up; but still I made over $100 last month via Amazon sales, a good chunk of which came from aggressively linking in my Reddit posts. You can check out the site to see how their commissions pan out, but keep this in mind when you post on Reddit and elsewhere, if you can embed links then you might be able to rack up the occasional sale. I'm sure there are more effective ways to do this, like writing product reviews and crap, but this is a painless way if you're not into writing and promoting yourself to death like me. :}
Anyway g2g for now, good luck with the info above so far!
