It lets you remote into a web interface and turn devices on/off. It also lets you script things up to turn things on/off. Comes with default scripts as well to ping an IP for example and if no reply after X minutes restart plug 2 etc etc.
I have one of these network power strips: http://www.amazon.com/Switch-Digital-Loggers-Outlets-Protection/dp/B00EZWD146
I can use it to turn a light on and off, reboot the Raspberry Pi if it were to freeze for some reason, or power off the printer.
The room I have it in has a lightswitch tied to one of the power outlets, and I've plugged the power switch into that outlet so that if anything bad happens instead of trying to open a web browser or something to shut the power off I can just flip the light switch.
There's this if you don't feel like going through the hassle of signing up as a partner:
Add a web power switch and you could automate the change over.
