No kidding. Seems like a waste of time, especially when this is $12 on Amazon.
When I'm done with changing the oil, I make sure it's sealed up tight and throw it in the back of my car for the next time I'm running errands. The household hazardous waste place here takes it, drains it into their giant vat, and gives me back the empty container. If it weren't for that thing, I'd still be paying the shop to do my oil changes.
