You can try this, I used one to clone my slow hard drive on the laptop to a fast SSD, and then swapped it out.
This is actually the adaptor I bought and used with my Blu-ray drive:

I have a case that doesn't allow for 5.25-inch drives, and I have no desire to keep an optical drive permanently in my PC anyway.
It also allows me to quickly connect an optical drive to my laptop or any other device with a USB port if I ever need to.
Finally, I prefer it over an enclosure because it's smaller and cheaper. I can also use it with any SATA device in the future. Not just the optical drive I originally bought it for.
When buying random adaptors like this, I try to buy versatile devices, not single use devices.
Sounds like windows itself, or it's boot manager, became corrupted during this transaction.
One way I've saved data in a similar situation to yours was by purchasing something like this. This would let you plug the drive into a different working computer, then copy off the important files you wanted to save.
Once completed, you can wipe and reinstall windows on the corrupted drive and recopy your files onto it!
Thanks for pointing that out, but I'm aware of the USB 2.0 speed limitations, and I don't really care if the backup-update procedure takes 4 hours instead of 15 minutes.
The problem I faced was with the aging HDD dock that can't handle a 8TB disk. Guess I'll have to buy a new one, unfortunately. Maybe this one?
I was not aware of that at all. How was it able to clone on to the SSDs without an additional power source?
I'm assuming this is what I would need?
And thanks, didn't even occur to me I'd need power

What part do you need help with? Can’t you just order what you need off of Amazon? Is the drive itself fine?
Are you just looking for something like this?

yeah, pretty much a USB to SATA adapter, I use one of these
Number 14 for sure. Especially if you are using a Samsung SSD (or maybe any SSD).
When I used an old laptop HDD as my Wii U drive and an old external enclosure non powered, it worked fine. Then I dropped a spare 860 Pro in there and it kept disconnecting while transferring data too it. Even on my PC that combo did the same.
Not all external drive enclosures with power are created equal.
This one would disconnect when WUP-ing games with the 860 Pro (as well as on PC)

So I ponied up and went with this, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XLAZTWA/ . Overkill for Wii U but all good.

Absolutely yes. That adapter will work as is with a 2.5" laptop style drive.
If its a desktop-style hard drive you may also need seperate power, such as this one, or something similar to it,
https://www.amazon.com/WEme-Converter-Adapter-Drive-included/dp/B00MVRS38G
You can buy adapters like: https://www.amazon.com/WEme-Converter-Adapter-Drive-included/dp/B00MVRS38G
Here is a link to a SATA to USB adapter, you only need the power adapter for desktop HDDs.
Get this and don’t bother with keeping it internal.

You could have a repair place try to fix it, it probably only needs a new USB connector soldered on, but since it's not designed to be opened the enclosure is almost certainly going to crack when you try to get in there.
It looks like it's just a regular USB to SATA adapter, so you could probably use any other USB to SATA adapter with external power to get access to the drive. Something like this, but probably not this.
