I ended up getting a ps2-to-GameCube controller adaptor and use either wired Sony controllers or Logitech wireless ones. You can usually find them as DDR pad adaptors. The downside is remembering the layout. Bonus: it works for the original Wii that has GameCube ports, too.
Edit: This is the specific one that I use (though it looks out of stock at amazon, liked it so much I bought a second one for player 2) https://www.amazon.com/Wii-GameCube-Converter-PS2-Dance-Support/dp/B000F7B516

If you can as well, try playing melee on a playstation controller. There are certain gamecube controller issues that I didn't even realize were issues until I tried playing on a PS1 controller - specifically how much nicer it is to have flatter/lower sitting buttons. Super slidey.
I know it's not what you meant, but this ps1/ps2 controller to gamecube adapter is very good and I would highly recommend it + a ps1/ps2 controller for playing on console if you're already used to ps3. Here is an in-depth review I did on it if you're at all interested.
It even has some advantages over using a gamecube controller imo, with dual Z buttons (R1 and L1 are both Z), face buttons that are much easier to slide across, circular stick gates being amazing for SDI, and amazing ease of use for "piano-style" playing being the main ones that I'd cite. It's also a lot cheaper to get a good ps1 or ps2 controller than it is to get a good gamecube controller in general.
EDIT: Looks like the price of the adapters went up on amazon. Here's an ebay one that looks good
It really depends, do you know what brand and have looked up info about using ps1 controllers with the adapter? I know there are some other adapters like this one that state that it does support ps1 and ps2 controllers, but from the looks of it, it seems that this is the adapter you linked and someone did ask the same question about using a ps1 controller, albeit he asked about the steering wheel, but I'm pretty sure it would work. You could always return the adapter and buy a different one that supports ps1 if it doesn't.
Huge amounts of depth. Lots of ATs including glitches that are very important for high level play, pretty similarly to melee.
Here's a video that goes over all the stuff in the game.
I was pushing for melee tournies to run it as a side event for a while but it didn't pan out and tbh I'm not deep in it at all myself, since I don't really have people to play it with, BUT it's still super nice and a very deep game regardless.
If you wanna play it with a stick on gamecube get a ps2 stick and this adapter. Though also bear in mind that there is also an HD remake on ps3 and 360 so that might be a better option for getting into it nowadays. No link though :'(((((( (or as much accessibility to melee players probably so it's kind of a tradeoff in terms of our specific scene)
There's this if you have a PS2 pad in decent shape. If you want to use a modern controller you'd need to make your own with an Arduino.
Well, they do have this adapter for PS2 controllers, which apparently works okay.
I'll see.
Classic controller pro is a godsend.
Also This is pretty beautiful.
