I used this for a number of years, not specific to any year, or make/model for that matter. Worked well for me, the magnet was plenty strong and didn't interfere with the phone or the car
WixGear Magnetic Mount, Universal Stick-On Dashboard Magnetic Car Mount Holder
I use this. It even comes with a metal disc the same size as the pop socket. Attach to your pop socket and you are good to go.

The magnet and skin fit inside the Spigen crystal case on my xl2.
My only issue with the case is after 6 months it started getting dark, but all clear cases like this do.
I use the other one that uses a 3m tape to mount. Works great.
This one

It works on a regular s9. It's not a strong hold, bumping into it can make it fall but it does stick. Not sure if you'll have the same results with an s9+. With the additional magnet is strong as fuck. I had an s8 with the magnet and it was really strong
I use this $9 one, it fits well into the cubby to the left of the shifter on my 2013.
My best advice on anything with adhesive pads is don't skip prepping the surface with alcohol and then letting it dry off. Otherwise you won't get good adhesion.

I bought an extra set of round disks, stuck them together, then put it between my phone case and iPhone. The magnet is strong enough to hold the phone. I glued the mount under the vent to the right of the screen. The arm is strong enough to hold the phone correctly. I bought the ball magnet, but the part that attached to the phone was way to big and the phone would still slide around.
Concerning the magnet I was scared too. But reading about it looks like it's not strong enough to actually damage a phone. But yes you are right about the hot air, I can close my vent.
They have also a sticky version, but reviews dont seem as good: https://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Dashboard-Swift-snap-Technology/dp/B012EI4J3O/ref=sr_1_9?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484859439&sr=1-9&keywords=phone+magnet+car+mount
I agree, I've been using this for about 6 months now and love it. However yesterday the rubber parts that grip the air vent pulled out. I was just looking at this thing instead. Same basic idea just taking the air vent out of the equation.
My wife and I have been using this magnetic car mount from Wizgear. They also have a vent mounted model
I was originally against them as I didn't want to stick the metal plate on the back of my phone but since I'm using a case to protect my Pixel...it's hidden.
I really like how easy it is to just touch my phone to the mount and it stays there. Since we are both using the same setup, we can mount either phone in either car. I liked this so much, I picked up a couple of these desktop stands. I've got one on my desk at work and at home. I like having my phone elevated off the desk.
A bonus use with the desktop stand, they have some decent weight and I'm able to use them with my 10.1" tablet (in landscape) without them tipping over.
Edit: Darn it! I didn't realize the desktop stand was available in a gloss black vs the chrome.
Edit 2: You keep a 2nd phone mount in your car for passengers? I've never heard of anyone doing that.
I use this with my Pixel. There is a thin metal plate you mount to the back of the phone. My wife and I use the same one, so we can use either phone in either car. I believe they also make one that clips on your air vents if you prefer that.
I also had one of these that I stopped using because the sticky pad left residue on my phone case. But, the magnetic from the phone mount above fits on the end of this...so I have it on my desk at home. I'm thinking of buying a 2nd for the office.
I use This one in my car. Holds my phone great, and you can't tell the little metal plate is under my case.
I've been using this one by WizGear for awhile now and I'm really happy with it. My wife wanted one too after seeing mine.
I does stick on the dash vs in the CD slot (or some that mount on the airvents) but I was okay with it. My wife was not so I actually took the base from my previous mount, the Cobra CB-MNT-UNI and put the WizGear magnetic round piece on it. Fits perfectly and doesn't require being stuck to the dash permanently.
PS - If anyone is interested in the Cobra mount, I don't recommend it. Although it worked well. The tacky part on the phone holding portion begins to break down and leaves a residue on the back of phone. It comes off but every time you use it, you pick up more.

Here's one with the magnet in the base for $10. http://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Dashboard-Swift-snap-Technology/dp/B012EI4J3O
