What is Reddit's opinion of Wyvern?

Wyvern by A. A. Attanasio might fit what you're looking for, somewhat: the main character spends his childhood as a witch-doctors apprentice. The fantasy aspects are pretty low-key though, from what I recall. It's more of a historical novel with mystic elements than a full-blown fantasy, but well-worth a try if you want to get away from that "medieval Europe" feeling.
