Definitely do some research first. In general, budgies are very fragile birds and can be hurt easily. Also, they won't show signs of sickness until it is very bad. Contact an avian vet in your area before getting a budgie to make sure you have somewhere to go if there's an emergency.
There are a lot of things in a house that can be dangerous to budgies. Things such as the coatings on non-stick pans and some plants could possibly kill your bird.
The cage itself should be large and spacious. There's no such thing as too big a cage. This cage is a good size and anything larger is even better.
Put a variety of natural perches and toys in their cage. Don't use the dowel perches (the long smooth perches that come with cages) as they can give your budgies arthritis. Toys should be a combination of chewing and foraging toys. You can get perches and toys on Amazon or in most pet stores.
This definitely doesn't cover everything a first-time budgie parent should know, so feel free to ask any questions!
This is the cage I have for my cockatiel, none of those are big enough and getting a square or rectangle cage is a lot better than one that's rounded or pointed on top (and it allows your bird to play on top of their cage)
no, it’s way too small. get a flight cage like this instead. even if you let your bird fly around outside of the cage, it doesn’t excuse the fact that it’s a terrible cage
I'm sorry this cage doesn't meet your budget requirements, but it's the cheapest one that I could find. Any cage larger than that is also perfect for your budgies. You should have at least 6-7 natural perches for your birds, as well as at least 5 chewing and foraging toys. Each bird needs their own food and water bowls, so four bowls in total. You also want a cuttlebone for them to trim their beaks and get calcium. Make sure they eat pellets (if they don't already, you can gradually convert them to pellets) and a lot of vegetables. Seeds and fruit should only be given as a treat. You don't need a nest, unless you want them to breed/have babies. Make sure they aren't near any open windows and remove any things such as scented candles and non-stick pans (those can be very toxic for them.) Hope this helped!

This is the cage i have and i love it!! Perfect size for my two tiels and gives them plenty of room to stretch their wings.
The cage isn't ideal as it's 18"x18" and a cockatiel wingspan can be about 12". Many people recommend cage size 2 times their birds wingspan. A flight cage like this one will be more ideal so when you have to put your bird in the cage when you gone they still have room to flap there wings.
I do, if I don't then my newer one will freak out at night and I'll wake up to flock calling. They have a big cage (this one) so as long as I make sure to have high perches on separate sides of the cage, it's fine. They don't argue or hurt each other unless either food or a high perch is involved (which is why I make sure there's multiple), they just aren't affectionate and don't really spend time with each other. They're out pretty much all day anyways, but right now for example they're in the same cage but on different perches, which is pretty much their entire relationship.
I have this one and love it! Enough room for plenty of toys and perches and he can still flap his wings and go wild!
I have one about this size and shape for two cockatiels.
Metal cages are expensive, but they are worth it in the long run.
This cage is $100, it's relatively cheap for a bigger cage.
yes, please get a bigger cage asap! this cage is way too small for two birds. what is your price range? if you don’t mind spending a tiny bit extra and have some room, i would recommend this one. for the size and quality, it’s a steal!!
I have this cage for both my cockatiel and conure (separate cages) which I really like. It's bigger than the one you're thinking of and less expensive, but you won't have a stand on top of the cage (although you could get that separately)
I see the cage you are talking about, it's about 5 inches wider, and then smaller in all other dimensions. I was going to get a self standing cage similar to this. It's still tall, I know, but has about 10" more width than the current, and won't be sitting on a table top. This look similar to the one the in ElleAndTheBirds (youtuber who does a lot of videos, was referenced in another post here and one I was casually watching at work for information). The pet store here can't get it, so I guess Bezos may end up with my cash if I can't find a local place, even PetCo around here is out of larger, similarly sized cages.
Thoughts?

Hi! I don't know if this will help, but:
Get her a full flight cage like this one at a minimum.
What diet is she on? I recommend roudybush maintenance mini. I also recommend giving a daily serving of whatever fresh vegetables (and some fruit) with it.
As others have said, no teflon. I also want to add that you should NEVER use the self cleaning function if your oven has it, the fumes can kill birds. Avoid using scented products around your bird.
Birds can be bitey or badly behaved. Do not yell when she does this (even when she bites and it hurts). Just stop giving her attention for a bit.
Take her out of the cage every day for about a minimum of an hour. Talk to her, too, they love that.
If you want to purchase bird toys or parts, I recommend A Bird Toy or California Bird Nerds. Bonka also has toys, but I personally avoid them because one time my bird (a GCC) immediately broke the chains used to attach to the cage and almost swallowed a chain. Bonka gave me a nonapology for it and implicitly blamed me for it. Just make sure you examine your toys for potential threats, such as frayed rope (which can catch on their nails) and string that could potentially choke the bird.
No happy huts (the fuzzy huts). Ever.
Avoid mirror toys, they may get too attachee to their own reflection.
If you have any questions about bird care, feel free to ask me or this subreddit.
I just got my rescue Ono.
He came from an animal hoarding situation, he is oddly enough really comfortable around anyone and I surprisingly did'nt even have to hand tame him. I opened the box and he jumped onto me.
As for cage hes currently in a bit of a tight cage but i will be upgrading him to one of these soon.

(As along with my other birds)
I work from home so the longest im away is on camping trips (which i am arranging to be able to take him too) and grocery trips.
Ill def get an air purifier cuz i got a stuffy nose already.
The adoption agency got him 5 days before i grabbed him and sadly his wings were clipped by the time i got to him. I am STRONGLY appose to wing clipping as it is akin to taking away someones ability to run and leaving them with walking.
He is on a 3 parts pellet 1 part seed diet.
As for a sleep cage, Ill see cuz hes rarely in his cage to begin with.

Affordable option. Cages width matters more than height, avoid ones that are tall and skinny.
Technically the minimum is 24” tall, 24” long, 18” wide, BUT this is the cage I have for my cockatiel and really wouldn't go for smaller unless they have at least 6 hours of outside time and a play stand.
yeah all of our animals are rescues besides ross, since she's a pet-sitter she finds a lot of animals and we end up taking them in. i fell in love with ross and dragged my mom to the pet store to visit him everyday because i adore him so much. one day she decided "fuck it" and bought him for me with a ridiculously small cage. i made her order the proper cage (this is the cage i made her buy if you're curious) and toys that he won't hurt himself with. and my ross is going through puberty too so now he's a moody little dumb dumb
After searching around and reading reviews on multiple posts and websites, we settled on this cage from Amazon (I hate buying from them but sometimes you just have to). It's quite sturdy and the bar spacing is 0.6" which seems to be nice enough for budgies. It's super spacious and has x2 large doors. The flat top is a nice bonus because we can put a play gym at the top for them. 5/5 would recommend
Get a flight cage, tall cage arent good. This cage also looks pretty cheap. Im not sure what your price range is but this cage should be good for around three budgies.

As for toys get some foraging ones that you add food and treats in so your bird has to work for it to stimulate the brain. Planet pleasures has great natural toys and a lot of them are around $3.
Watch Birdtricks on YouTube about target training to build a bond with your bird.
I’m not trying to be rude, that’s why I added my recommendations but a conure needs way more time out of their cage. It’s not fair to them. If another family member can’t spare an hour or two while you’re away from home then you should really consider rehoming her
This Is the one I have, its a little expensive but soo worth it if you have the space and money! Its a perfect size for them, enough room to flap their little wings :D! My birb absolutely LOVES it so I definitely recommend it!
Right so I would suggest an Amazon cage like this or go to Aosom.com and search up “Pawhut Bird Cages” and you should find a good selection of large cages, and I suggest a male-female pairing but a male-male pairing has been found to be fine as well-just not a female-female pairing as they can be infamous for attacking one another pretty seriously over nothing, but to be sure of your little birds gender I suggest you post a gender post because I’m not sure as to if they have any color mutations that can add difficulty to finding out the gender, but either way-good luck with your new little buddy!

He is too cute!! But no, he needs a bigger cage. A flight cage would be perfect. They can get sick if too stress out. Imagine you being confined to a tiny space and not being able to move and stretch your legs and arms. Also, maybe think about getting him a friend unless you are always home with him. They are flock animals which means they need to be at least in pairs. Good luck.
I attached the link of a flight cage. It’s on sale for 99 dollars 🤭awesome deal!

Normally they can share the same space, but they can get along. Slowly introduce one another, I've noticed budgies are more curious and friendly, while cockatiels are defensive and scared, so it's best to let them see each other for a day or two before meeting.
If you are absolutely positive that they don't fight, bicker over food and millet, and have a sleeping spot designated to both of them (all my birds get defensive when it's dark, I assume the limited eyesight made them scared, my budgie had a high perch that my cockatiel wouldn't reach, incase my cockatiel got alarmed or went somewhere else for bed), you can try to leave them in the same space.
I would first make sure that they can be in the same space, if they've been in the cage for hours without a problem, spanning over months of time, then you can try locking them inside the cage for small periods of time, and progress to doing that when you leave the house for less than an hour, then longer, then finally night. Again, this is not every bird, I would never, ever leave my newest budgie trapped with my cockatiel because they DO NOT get along, unlike my older budgie. This is with months of monitoring every interaction they had, and never seeing them actually attack each other. Along with that, if you're trying to just not buy a separate cage, you also need to quarantine for around a month (and, do NOT force them into the same cage at first, I can't imagine a situation where one doesn't suffer an injury.)
This is a large enough cage to house them in, while I have seen reviews on smaller cages where they've housed a budgie and cockatiel, I would not risk something smaller than this.
This is the cage I bought for them. I saw a lot of people recommending this one as well. I didn't see anything mentioning how many cubic inches in the description though..
I don't have a nest in there.. could that be the reason for this behavior?
The bigger the better is the rule with birds. This would be ideal, but it’s okay if it’s somewhere in between what you have and this, of course.

this is my cockatiel's cage, where they mainly hang out. My budgie's cage is smaller than yours, and I'm hoping to get a new one soon too.
I can't really give much tips, as all cockatiels are different. Mine hates when it's night, she gets cranky and defensive and bites more often, so I try to put her to bed before it gets too dark (another reason why I wouldn't house them together) one time I kept them out too long and my budgie was in my cockatiels sleeping place and they got angry with each other, so I quickly separated them into their own cages and put them to bed. Millet doesn't seem to be as much of a motivator for cockatiels as it is for budgies, so I would try to get one onto pellets and use seed mix as treats instead, and it may take a few months for them to figure out what they like and don't like if you bought them newly weaned.
They are A LOT more destructive. I bought a fairy expensive finger trap toy when I was leaving for 5 days (my family would be taking care of them) and when I came back it was completely destroyed, verses when I put two finger traps on a clip and it's been 3 weeks and my budgie has hardly made a dent with it. My cockatiel also keeps trying to eat my wall and wood shutters yet pays no mind to my wood toys.
They also look super derpy when they look straight at you, pictures don't do them justice.
I thought I’d share this cage with you if you’re looking for one. It’s $140 but for the price it’s definitely worth it. It’s absolutely huge, lots of space for him to explore while you’re at school and you can put plenty of toys and such in there.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_PR6Y2FVWT2F7HW3KD8WZ
I have 3 of those cages. 1 is housing 6 Budgies, and the other two each have a cockatiel. Hopefully after quarantine I can put two cockatiels in 1 cage.
$130, very roomy for a tiel, easy pull out trays, etc. No lock but you can easily buy one for it! It's just a hatch type mechanism. I use one very similar to this and it works great for my tiel, no lock needed. I have ordered two of these brand and had no issues with them or broken parts etc. :)
oh hes out pretty much all day lol! but when i need to put him away its loud, and he likes to sit on top and climb the outside when he's out lol.
and i know theyre all metal lol, but i see some big cages that look like... thicker metal? like this type of cage
I'd recommend this flight cage ,
it's not that expensive (I spent more buying what's inside the cage than the cage itself) it's very big for a budgie (which you need if they're going to be locked up all day) building it is pretty easy, if you 2 people to build it, and the doors cannot be opened by the inside.
Also, no suck thing as too big, the bigger the better as long as the line spacing is correct
Yes, they can be added later. I'd recommend that, plus you're supposed to quarantine the new bird in another room for 2 weeks to a month (some people suggest 90 days, I haven't heard of anyone actually do that) and you can try to bond with the other bird during that time. Also when introducing the two, make sure to do it in a place where the first bird hasn't ever been or has been very little, and place their cages side by side for a few days and monitor their interactions with each other, don't let any bird go in any cages before you're 100% sure they get along (putting them in the same cage right after or as their first interaction would lead to a death)
For the geo cage, I've heard that cages like those (round looking, no sharp corners) make a new bird scared, as they see corners as a place to hide and with cages like those there aren't many secure places that look safe, for two birds I understand this looks big but maybe a flight cage like this
This is a nice cage if you're going to let your quaker out at least several hours every day. Make sure you fill it up with a lot of toys and natural perches! You can also buy any cage that's larger than that as long as you have the money :)
I have this cage by yaheetech for my two tiels, and it is plenty big enough for them. It is around the same size as the prevue. So I suppose it's all on preference; do YOU want something bigger? If your birds are in their cage for multiple hours at a time outside of sleeping (my birds are out all day, only get locked in to sleep), then you'd want to get the biggest one you can afford. Otherwise, the prevue will work just fine for them :)
I recently bought a cage off amazon, budgies are supposed to have more horizontal room than vertical room but I was in the same boat as you. Here is the link to the one I bought
The best advice is to buy the biggest cage you can afford that has the correct bar spacing. We actually calculated the volume of each cage when we were shopping to compare 🙄. Remember that generally birds will use wider space versus taller, but our conure does use her WHOLE cage. They are very busy. We have a few of these and really like them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_MLWzFb8NYZKHD
We also found that we prefer to have play stands separate from the cage, so this setup works well for us. I hate the seed skirt for some reason (I may be the only one, but I hated cleaning them), so that wasn’t a factor.
Congrats on your new birb!

This is my all time favorite cage, although i do go a little overboard for my birdies and i have two tiels in there. Minimum cage requirements for a single tiel is 24" long by 18" wide by 24" tall. The bigger the cage, the more comfortable your birdie will be!
Sorry for the long post in advance!
3 most important things in my opinion (and experience)
Socialization!! Even when getting a hand fed baby, no bird is going to be 100% tame and bonded with you as soon as you bring it home. If you want a cuddly, friendly bird, you have to put in the work! Hand fed babies are generally a lot more sociable, so if you can get one of them rather than a baby raised solely by its parents, it will be much easier to bond with them. If you can’t provide at least 1-2 hours of attention to your bird a day, it’s best to get two so they have company (as tiels age extremely social birds). Some people claim that having two will cause them to bond to each other instead of you, but as long as you socialize properly that should be an issue. I have two tiels that are both extremely loving to me!
Diet!! Lots of people think of seeds when they think of birds but in reality, seeds should only make up about 10%-20% of your tiels diet! Pellets are an easy go to, but a healthy cockatiel needs fresh fruits and veggies as a huge part of their diet! Also remember to provide sources of calcium (cuttlefish bones are my birds favorite!)
Cage/Living space!! The bigger you can get the better. Cockatiels have a wingspan of about 50 cm, and they need to stretch those wings! (Side note, please do not clip them! In my experience a fully flighted cockatiel is a much healthier and happier bird). I have this cage for my two tiels and it’s absolutely perfect

Is this one better you think?
this cage is pretty great, and my birds absolutely love it, if your birds will be outside for most/all of the day, this cage will work. The problem with the first commenter's cage is that it's very narrow, and as most birds like to be as high as possible it can get crowded at the top, and leave a lot of empty space at the bottom.
This would be a great cage for him, definitely needs natural perches. If you can't make your own, these or these natural perches would be good. Rope perch needs to be replaced, it seems torn up which isn't safe for them.
You also need toys, it's recommended you have at least 3 toys in a cage at a time, and rotate them frequently. these are good shredding toys, which many birds love, and this which is a foraging toy.
If you want a flight cage, here's a pretty cheap one https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ?ref_=ast_sto_dp

I just picked up this cage for my two young cockatiels. Very pleased with the size and hard to beat for $100: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ
If you’re only letting them out for 2-3 hours a day you’re gonna need a big cage. Something this size or bigger:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_F6hkFbAPPH0NZ
Alright, what's the setup of the cage, and the dimensions? Most of the time, especially as presents, people don't buy big enough cages.
Here's a link to a post someone made that covers a lot of it.
Replace any dowel perches, sandpaper perches, or plastic perches with natural wood ones, as dowels and plastic perches don't offer enough variation in width and can create multiple health problems.
There needs to be toys, those offer the mental stimulation captive parrots need. Like the link says, look for soft, shreddable toys. Soft wood like sola and yucca, shredded paper, cardboard, wicker and vine shapes like balls, stars, and chains, finger traps, and seagrass mats are all toy parts I recommend.
I recommend once they do a basic step up to let them out of their cage for at least 2 hours a day. If you can't do that, then I would suggest a cage at least 30 x 20 x 37. If you can do that, and have a space safe enough and a playstand or other space they can go to while out, then something like 30 x 18 x 18 is good.
Stainless steel dishes are better than plastic, as plastic harbors bacteria. Stay away from mirrors and rope toys, if you get a rope perch and notice them chewing on it, either get rid of it or wrap it in vet wrap, because they can't digest cotton and it'll get stuck in their crop, making them unable to eat.
Also, they're expensive little animals. When my budgie was sick (with a common illness) the vet bill was $240. You should also look into an avian vet, because they're hard to find and can be faraway. Toys, perches, and cages are also expensive. They shouldn't be fed only seeds, the best diet is 50% pellets, 10-20% seeds, and the rest a variety of vegetables. Like the link above says, just vegetables and seeds are alright if you can't get pellets.
Be patient, they're prey animals, they get nervous over small things. Cutting your hair, wearing a hat, or a change to their cage layout like a new toy or perch can freak them out.
I have this cage, that my budgies love. Because it's taller than others like this one my budgies go father down the cage, which lets me use the space more.
This is a very popular cage for conures and cockatiels, which I use and love. If you want something bigger, I've heard good things about this corner cage. There's also a double cage, which is around double as big as the first link.
Also, .5 inches is the maximum recommended space for budgies, so I'm pretty sure conures can go a bit bigger.
its great you’re doing your research! definitely keep it up- there’s a lot more that goes into caring for budgies than most people realize, but it seems like you’re already on the right track to being a great birb parent.
this is my go to recommendation and personal cage. it’s big, good quality, and really good value, but note that the bar spacing is a little bit bigger than recommended, but most people don’t have an issue with it. https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=big+bird+cage&qid=1658154061&sr=8-3
here’s another one around that price that’s slightly smaller, but still roomy AND has the proper bar spacing. https://www.amazon.com/SUPER-DEAL-Chinchilla-Cockatiel-Cockatoo/dp/B075T5Q4PF/ref=pd_aw_sbs_sccl_4/136-9487495-5018539?pd_rd_w=lchNN&content-id=amzn1.sym.f7552d2f-24d5-41ee-a5bc-72f4160e00c3&pf_rd_p=f7552d2f-24d5-41ee-a5bc-72f4160e00c3&...
and here’s one significantly smaller (and decently cheaper) than the other cages that can work for two budgies if they get lots of time out of their cage, which they need regardless. note that perches and play areas can always be added to the outside to increase their usable space :) https://www.amazon.com/You-Me-Finch-Rectangle-Flight/dp/B074P4T56Z/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=FXCCETSJ740Y&keywords=finch+cage&qid=1658154479&sprefix=finch+cage%2Caps%2C97&sr=8-3
good luck! Regardless, you’re going to want one more wide than tall and in the long run it’s cheaper to get the biggest cage you can right away (instead of several upgrades).
I would recommend a bigger cage without the v shaped top, as they can be dangerous to their toes. Amazon has some good ones which are pretty affordable. You can also check out Facebook marketplace as it has some good ones from time to time. These would be some of my suggestions
https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ
https://www.amazon.com/Nova-Microdermabrasion-Cockatiel-Parakeet-Chinchilla/dp/B072QVRL7P
I have these cages for my conure and cockatiel, and this cage for my budgies. Personally, I like my budgies' cage more because it has opening in the side so I can actually put perches at the back, and the height makes them more likely to go farther down instead of staying in the top half. Both nice cages though.
It takes them a while to adjust! Patience, budgie parent. Definitely keep millet on hand, it will help with taming. Adding a few toys and natural perches will quickly help him feel happier, which will make him more receptacle to bonding too :)
If money is a concern, start checking out places like Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, etc. for used bird cages. You can get a bigger one pretty cheap. If not, here are a few good ones to look into:
excellent value for the money and excellent quality, but the bars are spaced slightly more apart than normal and some Houdini birbs may be able to get out https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=336W456EZQFU0&keywords=bird+flight+cage&qid=1655842395&sprefix=bird+flight+cage%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa...
this one can sit on a table and bar spacing is proper, but it’s smaller, so your birb will have to be out of his cage for a bit longer every day (but he should be out regardless of size) https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B096TJJBRV/ref=sspa_mw_detail_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWw&th=1
I noticed the biggest improvement in my budgie when I upgraded his cage (to the first one). He was SO much Happier and his behavior improved, so he got much more affectionate.
what cuties. and it’s great that you want to upgrade! so… that cage isn’t TERRIBLE if they’re being let out for a while each day, so if I were you, I’d save up for a bit longer and get a great cage to begin with. it’s a good value and nice quality, so this is my cage and my recommendation: https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=29NZUWU88V8AL&keywords=52+inch+bird+cage&qid=1655695356&sprefix=52+inch+bird+cage%2Caps%2C89&sr=8-3
the first cage seems a bit small, and wider is always better anyway. and the second one is a bit better, but for that price, I think it would be cheaper in the long run to get the suggested cage. there is also this option I’ve seen, which is about the size of the linked one but without the wheeled bottom section, but I’d look into reviews more because it seems the quality isn’t as great as the linked one. https://www.amazon.com/Multiple-Aviaries-Canaries-Lovebirds-Breeding/dp/B08Q2D4X77/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=36+bird+cage&qid=1655695724&sr=8-5
this is the cage I use and I love it! much bigger and much cheaper, and my bird is so happy in it https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ
So I got this cage and its a very good size for 4 parakeets or more even. Hope that helps
Here is it! Pretty sure mine came damaged, though, (or I just suck at putting together cages) but it's a very nice cage and pretty cheap.
I got it off of Amazon (link). Mine did seem to come a bit damaged (mainly the legs), but you can't tell from the end result.
If you use Amazon this or thiswould be a great cage for two budgies (if not then I would look for something like it)
You should also get natural wood perches, because dowels (the one you have) don't offer enough texture and can cause health problems after long use.
I would also get more shredding toys, which are toys they can chew. Finger traps, vine balls, shredded paper, seagrass mats and loofah are all popular bird toys they can chew.
This is the cage I have, and my birds like it a lot, although it doesn't fit comfortably in the cage and I had to use zip ties. This is a popular choice on this subreddit, but some reviews say their budgie can escape through the bars. I have it for my cockatiel, though, and it's very big. This is more horizontal and less tall, which makes them use more space, though it is overall smaller.
This one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_EFSNDRHZ606BXP85V9YM I believe is good. I have a smaller cage from this brand for my two budgies and they love it
This is the cage that my cockatiel has, and I really like it.
The cage you sent is more tall than it is wide. Most birds rarely use the bottom half of the cage because they prefer to perch higher up than below https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_6Q21W5X02JT47DFNSC3P
I just got a terrific cage. Let me know if you want any advice on toys mine likes, etc.
Ok, that sounds good! In the meantime I'd say try to earn his trust by leaving treats (then progressing to having him eat from your hand eventually once he's comfortable) so that at least he can spend more time out of the cage. It might take a few more days or weeks but I think he's almost there!
When you do get a new cage, try to aim for one that has both width and height. Basically rectangular base rather than square, without being too short either so you have room to hang toys. People usually get a cage with longer horizontal space as cockatiels fly side-to-side rather than vertically upwards. Something like this might be good in terms of dimensions, if you can. https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo-Parakeet/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=psdc_2975226011_t1_B08TQS7FTK I haven't tried this myself but someone recommended it to me so if you have another brand in mind then by all means!
This cage is perfect for a pair of budgies! It’s cheap and both the grate and tray come out.
If you want one you can set on top of a desk or table, then this cage would work without the stand. Since it has a removable divider as well, you can easily separate quarrelling birds.
Remember that the MINIMUM cage size for two budgies is 12000 cubic inches, and the smallest side should be no shorter that 18 inches (15 inch side is too small for a budgie).
Remember to quarantine the new bird for at least a month before putting it in the same cage or letting it interact with your existing flock, especially if it’s from a pet store! This will prevent the speed of sickness. It’s best to quarantine even after the new bird has been cleared by the vet.
That’s not even big enough for one budgie. Each budgie needs at least 6000 cubic inches (2 birds need 12000, 3 need 18000 etc).
Budgies are parrots and need constant stimulation. They should always have access to toys.
This cage is a wonderful size for budgies, and is pretty cheap. This cage is a bit more expensive and is smaller, but can be set on top of a table or desk, and it comes with a divider so you can separate them if they get aggressive.
I would get this one which I have for my cockatiel, but I've heard that some peoples budgies escape with the large bar spacing, and while I'm not concerned with my male, my female would totally try to escape if she figured it out.
This cage seems to have similar bar spacing, but the pictures seem smaller than what it says? Or maybe not, it's hard to tell without seeing it in person. I'm hoping, with a bigger cage, my male would want to sleep with my female (who's clipped) instead of going into my cockatiel's cage to sleep every night.
This cage has a very similar foot print (takes up about the same floor space) but is much larger and all sides are more than 18 inches! The bar spacing is about half an inch, meaning it’s safe for budgies. It’s more affordable than most cages as well, which is a perk! If you want a cage with a divider, then this cage is just slightly bigger than the one you picked out, but it’s 18 inches on the smallest side, which meets the minimum. This cage is split in two, but is more expensive, but it is also 41000 cubic inches, which is a wonderful size for two budgies!
This is the one I have
This is the one that I have, which is 31.1 x 20.4 x 52 inches

good luck and make sure you get a large enough cage with 1/2 inch bar spacing or less!!
I would look pictures from all the perches you'll buy just to make sure they're big enough for a cockatiel.
Just a suggestion, and you probably have a reason, but this cage seems to be both bigger and cheaper, with just less tall shelf space.
You should also get some shredding toys
Our 2 rosey bourkes have this one. It's worth it if you're willing to spend $130. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JW8YCQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_S4E8VX26X79JHQMAD7A4
