Yes you have to get certain types of SD cards in order to get the best use.
https://www.amazon.com/YI-Nightscape-Camera-Heat-Resistant-Supercapacitor/dp/B01CW4BUPK
After having some SD Trouble I find that a UHS1 works the best. SanDisk Ultra UHS1 32GB has been great for years
Just off of Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=dp_prsubs_1 This is a similar dash cam to what I have. They actually discontinued making my exact one. But I will say I love Yi. Best bang for your buck. You will need to buy a Micro SD card as the cam doesn't come with one.
This is the same company that made my dash cam: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=dp_prsubs_1
Not the exact one, as the one I bought was only $45. I think they discontinued making the one I purchased. Great company all around for the price you pay. They don't come with the micro SD cards though so you'll have to buy one off of Amazon for a few bucks. Happy hunting!
here is the one I have but I got it half off for a sale a couple years ago. I really like that it has an app for downloading the videos.
Older version of this YI Nightscape Dash Cam, 1080p Smart Wi-Fi Car Camera with Heat-Resistant Supercapacitor, Superb Night Vision, Sony Sensor, 140° FOV, 2.4”Screen, Phone App - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_a_9836H439DJ7C2VENM5GS?psc=1
No.
While I really do not like Teslas/Elon Musk their built in dash cams piss me off for how cool of a feature it is, yet they are the only ones in the industry (I'm aware of) to do it. Which is doubly annoying because most cars have built in cameras already.
Luckily dash cams can be had for pretty cheep. I got a forward facing one for 80 dollars in October of 2019 and it's worked pretty good. It's a great way to protect yourself and rake in karma from r/roadcam r/dashcam.
Looks like my particular model has been discontinued, but I'm sure Yi makes a similar model.
A rear facing camera can be a good edition, but I don't think it's as important. Generally speaking if you get rear ended the other guy will be found at fault.
Nothing to add that hasnt already been said. But here is a dash cam brand I use myself which is price conscious that is good 1080 quality https://www.amazon.ca/YI-Nightscape-Camera-Heat-Resistant-Capacitor/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=pd_sbs_1?pd_rd_w=F7lz5&pf_rd_p=4dc33e2e-16b5-4e12-aab9-e86d5748e0cb&pf_rd_r=VWGQRF2M64CWX43YABAR&pd_rd_r=3b0ffa4c-002a-4074-ba6d-762e1afd9cc3&pd_...
Get one that has a supercapacitor in it so that the battery doesnt explode with how hot it gets here.
I got one this one after my last one was stolen. Amazon.com: YI Nightscape Dash Cam, 1080p Smart Wi-Fi Car Camera with Heat-Resistant Supercapacitor, Superb Night Vision, Sony Sensor, 140° FOV, 2.4”Screen, Phone App - Black: Electronics
I don't have any recommendations off the top of my head, but here's some good tips when searching:
I would also roll back your expectations a bit. If you want a nice camera, get a GoPro. A dashcam is basically disposable camera made by 3rd-rate Chinese manufacturers. This is just something you want hard-wired and always on in the remote case of an accident.
A quick Amazon search yielded this guy. That's probably what I'd buy if I was in the market.
I've got two of these YI Cam (one for each vehicle) and they've been great.
Night footage is good. The cord is nice and long. Has a dedicated wifi connection to transfer stills or videos if you don't want to remove the SD card to do a manual transfer to your computer.
At $100 is a great price for peace of mind or just to share "guess what I just saw" type stuff.
Sadly or thankfully I've never captured anything too dramatic, just some folks that don't know how to use a round-a-bout properly.
The best decision I made was to spend the money and buy one off of Amazon. I have a similar model to this one that was about $45: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=dp_prsubs_1
I also had to buy a micro SD card for a few bucks too for this dashcam. So a heads up to you!
I have a Yi brand.
Seems like they discontinued the one I have, but this is the newer on. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-cBrFbRF0PTS5
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CW4BUPK
Paid $35. Very easy to use. No longer available, tho.
Check /r/Dashcam and they have a list of recommendations.
I'll typically be on here: https://slickdeals.net/ And, put in a Deal Alert for Dashcam. When I get an email I'll take a look and decide if I'll buy it.
This is the one I have, it saved me insurance-wise in an accident a couple years ago.
I have the older version of https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4BUPK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_JSY100E7AFT9950RYY0R
Dashcam are commodity items.. ie better ones always come out.. so focus on the quality / price ratio. Upgrade every few years as the resolution / frame rate improves. Higher frame rate allows you to catch details when the cars are in motion.
I use single channel cameras, then migrate older ones to the rear. No need to get dual camera ones.
I think the Yi Nightscape which goes on sale at $56 on Amazon every few weeks is the best deal right now.

This is great https://www.amazon.ca/YI-Nightscape-Camera-Heat-Resistant-Capacitor/dp/B01CW4BUPK
It is well built.. cheap $60 bucks even just a few days ago
Because things happen fast.. get as high fps as you can afford.
Oh one tip.. buy some extra *plastic* cell phone screen cover and use that to stick your camera to the windscreen so it can be easily removed.

i have a Yi Nightscape. It has a super-capacitor, which is better for hot climates. About $70 on Amazon. Works well for me.
I have used a Yi Dashcam for my last 3 cars including my 2017 Prius, it has a great app that allows you to download clips to your phone over bluetooth instantly. It is also important that you use a microsd card that is designed for extensive read/write. The dashcam subreddit has some great resources as well.

Anyways, the best rated heat are the Street Guardian line up. Since I don't particularly like or dislike Street Guardian, I don't look at their line up, except when people ask about extreme heat conditions. They could have newer dash cams, I would just be unaware of them.
Anyways, SGGCX2PRO, and Street Guardian SG9663DC are pretty standard advice. For better advice, look them up, and their other products.
> what can i do to mitigate the heat?
Buy a Prius with the solar panel that turns the fan vents on. Seriously, it cools the car with the solar panel on the roof, but that is the only thing that solar panel does.
Dash mat - Won't reduce heat, but it will protect your dashboard, and reduce reflections. - Pick a dark color.
Car Window shade - they sell them, not sure if they work.
Car windshield Sun Shade - Not sure if they work, but people have them.
Car window tint - No idea if this works, but people have them.
That car window vent fan thing - Doesn't work but people have them.
Cracking your windows - possibly works.
Car Window rain guards - They work at keeping out the rain when you crack your windows.
> Are there any dash cams that are not pricey and are heat resistant?
Street Guardian either the SGGCX2 1CH, or SGGCX2Pro would be the most heat resistant, have the best video quality in extremely dark conditions.
A119 v2, B1W, and SGGCX2Pro are common answers.
A129 2CH, BlackSys/Thinkware/BlackVue models are as well.
Edit: Added new dashcams.

I suggest purchasing your next dash cam with a Credit Card with a #1 Buyers Assurance Plan, #2 Extended Warranty Program. American Express has this on many of their cards, and so do several other credit cards on the market.
It goes from paying for shipping for a RMA, to having the Credit Card company cover you for up to $2000 in a fiscal year (for American Express anyways.)

> Are there any dash cams that are not pricey and are heat resistant?
Street Guardian either the SGGCX2 1CH, or SGGCX2Pro would be the most heat resistant, have the best video quality in extremely dark conditions.

> I have resigned myself to this, but anyone have any ideas?
1) Contact the vendor/place you purchased the dash cam - explain problem trouble shoot with them.
2) Contact manufacturer - explain the problem trouble shoot with them.
3) Check your credit card if it has Buyers Assurance, or Extended Warranty program. - This is the most helpful one.
Vendors/Place of purchase can be useful source of information sometimes, and also help with RMAs.
Manufacturer is generally shit.
Credit card Buyers assurance plan, or Extended Warranty programs is excellent but you will need it on your card.
Suggest switching to
2x 1Channel systems for Front/Rear
2X Dash cams + 2X Hardwire kits + 2x Micro SD cards
Make sure front Hardwire kit is:
(Adjustable) 11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v, 12.4v Voltage only. - VIOFO 3 wire hardwire kit
(Preset/Not Adjustable) 11.8v or higher Voltage only. - VIOFO 2 Wire Hardwire kit
(Adjustable) 11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v, 12.4v Voltage/Timer based. - Power magic pro
Avoid:
11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v = Deep Cycling the battery = Will 1/2 the life expectancy of a cranking automotive battery.
12.4v = Normal use = Expected battery lifespan will be normal.
11.6v = Dead battery = Vehicle will not start.
So you could RMA and get a refund - #1, and #2 - will likely cost you shipping. #3, will likely be free.
You could RMA and exchange #1, or #2 - Will likely cost you shipping, and you would be rolling the dice as to the same problem again.
You could switch to a different dash cam manufacturer: It is hard to out do Street Guardian for Australian heat. - Many other manufacturers place similar numbers, but in reality they are not build for heat as much as Street Guardian.
What I strongly suggest is staying with Street Guardian, simply switching to 2x 1 Channel dash cams, and eliminate the problem you have encountered.

I may have listed links in the bottom, which I did not list above, because I got tired in the middle of it.
Added: B2W, Yi Nightscape, A119 v3, BlackSys CH-300 2CH, + Updated Some prices but not all.
