I am wondering the same. You can also get a small plastic elbow (like this metal one from Amazon, they have plastic ones too, I have not found 3/8" at my local big boxes) so you would need very little room above the fermenter.
I have my fermenters in a chest freezer, and for some fermenters I don't have room for an airlock, so I just run a blowoff tube.
