Get the kid used to a noise machine right away. It'll help cover up the sounds of TV, music, doors closing, etc so wakeups don't occur as often. I happened to use an air filter at first but now use a Marpac Dohm.
I have that and a dimmed red lamp set up. "Turn on/off the sleepy" controls them.
And if you can still hear them, get a white noise machine to keep in your room, near the door.
I'm a REALLY light sleeper. Naturally I own one cat who wanders the halls at night, wailing (for no reason at all), and one who runs around like an idiot all night (at 13 years old!!).
Drowning them out is your best defense. The white noise machine is a good start (I like this one). Add ear plugs if necessary.
Ouch for you. Yeah, heavy walkers. Hopefully the person will leave. Is he wearing shoes? If he wore slippers, that would help, but it sounds like they don't care. I hope he leaves, for your sake. I have a little bluetooth speaker that plays waterfall sound. It really helps blot out sounds. You can dedicated white noise makers that will do the job on amazon. These things really help. They suck up sound, even bass to a certain extent.
https://www.amazon.ca/Marpac-DOHM-DS-TN-Natural-Actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?th=1
This thing. I just rigged up a speaker with an SD card with waterfall sound in. I couldn't live without it. It is my shield and my protector! It's weird, but it makes me feel safe when I sleep. I leave it running all night. Sounds like you need a loud one.
I have pretty severe tinnitus, and I've been using this white noise machine for over a decade. For reasons I can't identify, it seems to block out sound better than white noise on my phone or smart speaker.
I have this and it is fantastic. A friend recommended it to me a few years ago and now it runs all the time in my bedroom.
Until you focus in on the ridiculously short loop of white noise and all you can hear is loop ... loop ... loop ... loop ...
A real fan white noise machine solves that problem, though of course it has obvious limitations (limited volume and tone control using the hole adjustments, can't do non-fan sounds, etc).
I'm so sorry you're going through that. Unfortunately the short answer is no, I haven't resolved it. On the other hand, I've learned that my desire for silence is completely valid, and I allow myself to seek it more than ever before.
I moved cities after that and landed in another noisy place, and gave myself permission to break that lease to seek silence. It's not perfect where I live now, but MUCH better. Even if you're not able to change where you live right this moment, just acknowledging that you're not crazy and you're allowed to seek silence can be helpful. I know part of what used to bother me is that on a deeper level I felt like I was being a jerk for wanting it to be quiet. I don't know if that applies to you though.
On a practical level, I do now use a white noise machine. For me, only the ones that use a motor to produce the noise work at all, and high and low frequencies still get through. Other things that have helped: a weighted blanket, cbd flower (/r/hempflowers), and regular meditation.
So while it's absolutely not resolved, and I can 100% slip back into rage and panic under the wrong circumstances, I manage it a bit better.
I hope something in my comment can be of some use to you, and that you're able to get relocated sooner than you expect. Hang in there.
NTA. If you’re making effort to be considerate that’s all you can do. Encourage roommate to get a white noise machine. Or just to search “white noise” on YouTube and let it play if he doesn’t want to spend $. This white noise machine was one of the best investments of my life:
Yogasleep Dohm Classic (Tan) The Original White Noise Machine | Soothing Natural Sound from a Real Fan | Noise Cancelling | Sleep Therapy, Office Privacy, Travel | For Adults, Baby | 101 Night Trial https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_DKNB4SK7Y1BE8NSF6PKA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I can't think of anything that wouldn't look like a bandage fix, but consider getting a noise machine to mask small sounds like this (and plumbing, HVAC, traffic, etc.). We've used a Dohm DS for the past 8 or 9 years and it has been great for this:
https://www.amazon.ca/Marpac-DOHM-DS-TN-Natural-Actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM
NTA One time my mom overheard half of a conversation. I was telling a friend about a creep who asked me if I wanted a threesome with my female friend and I said “sure I’d like that” my mom only heard that part and left crying and upset before she would have heard how I said that to keep him from exploding before I could block him when the game was over. She literally cried about it for a week before telling me and letting me explain. Overhearing is dangerous. Get your niece one of those noise machines that makes it hard to listen. I’ll see if I can find it. My therapist uses them all over the office
EDIT: here
I assume your mom is listening through the wall. I doubt this will change and she'll just continue and keep the info you give to herself. Therapist offices always (in my experience) have white noise machines to help with privacy. I highly suggest this one. It's the same one pretty much all doctor offices have. It's AMAZING for helping you sleep too! They typically have one inside and another outside the office, but just one close to you in your room could potentially help! I hope you can find the privacy you need. I've been struggling with that myself because my house is small and my husband and I work from home. The white noise machine is freaking awesome.
*ETA, you're 100% NTA. I would have done the same thing!
You can get this one on Amazon
I used to live on an aircraft carrier and have been using this exact machine since I came home in 2005 to help me sleep.
1.5 years ago I started seeing a new therapist (anxiety issues) and they have this exact model in their waiting room.
Its not a repeating recording, its a small motor that sucks air through vents in the case. Its a constant hum that you can adjust by selecting the lower or higher setting, but also by adjusting the vents on the side/top of the unit.
So its not one sound, you can customize it to your liking. If you like a louder wind sound then open the vents fully and set it on high... just need a very light wind sound then close the vents and place it on low. Not to mention all the customization levels in-between.
Speaking of which, I need to buy a few more of these to stock away in case they go away forever. They have been on amazon since at least 2004 (when my step-dad bought one) so who knows how long they will be around with all the high tech white noise machines coming out.
I have this one:
While it's not the cheapest, it's well worth it. Amazon tells me I bought it 7 years ago and it's still going strong. It's better than the smartphone apps which always sound "fake" to me. This one is like a fan that you can change the tone and frequency of. It's great.
It’s not this brand of white noise generator is it? Because I had the same thoughts when I went to replace mine (a friend gave me this exact one). Looks outdated as hell, but is surprisingly one of the top rated ones on Amazon.
Regardless, I experienced what you described today, even. Yesterday a friend suggested a very specific dumpling restaurant in Seattle. I didn’t look it up or anything relative on my phone, and I don’t even live in Seattle; I live 1 hour outside. Today I got a targeted ad for that restaurant on instagram... ugh. Edit: can’t type on mobile

I have a 31 ft with a rubber roof and it is SO loud when it rains. I have a fan and a noise machine that does a good job drowning out sounds. I need it just in general because at campgrounds you can hear everything when you're trying to sleep.

I have this one and i LOVE IT.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Z4gwEbA48XVBJ
It’s a little pricey, but it’s so nice. It’s just air and it’s great. My gf and I stayed at an AirBNB once and they had this white noise machine and we literally bought one on amazon after the first night, we loved it so much. Been using it every night for over a year now!
it can dehydrate the room and yourself. Not a problem if you live in a humid area really, but it will absolutely affect you otherwise. Some people have both a fan and a humidifier going at the same time ♀️ there are also sound machines built in a way similar to fans - not just recorded noise - that won't circulate the room
I have an actual white noise machine in my living room and one near my bed. I run them almost constantly. I see what you mean about not being quite the same but after a while I actually like them more than fans. They have a smoother whirl sound and I dont usually like to have fans on as much as I enjoy having them always on. My girlfriend used to say she felt like she was sleeping in a wind tunnel and I was like "exactly, world's best sleep!" specifically this one. I like it because it doesnt feel like an artificial speaker noise or phone app would
Sorry that doesn't work!
Have you tried a white noise machine? Some people swear by them. I've noticed I fall asleep better when the air conditioner is making noise. When it turns off it's eerily silent and my mind starts going a little.
Light reading something before turning the light off?
Can you ban the cats from the bedroom at night?
I've personally tried earplugs but they hurt my ears and I become overly conscious of them.
I hope you can find a way to get to sleep without having to wear yourself out. :(
Buy a red light bulb for the bathroom if you can. This will be easier on your eyes if you need to turn it on in the middle of your sleep and won't wake you up. I also highly recommend these.
You need to check this out. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KUHFGM/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_9?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Ive had one of these for the last 12 years and it is still going strong to this day, so its worth the investment.
Its also nothing more than a small motor inside a plastic case that sucks air through the vents in the case. This creates a really steady and soothing white noise sound that never stops or loops.
Seriously, if white noise is something that makes your life better then that white noise machine will be amazing for you.
I've tried a few and you really can't go wrong with a Marpac sound conditioner. There are cheaper digital versions of this worth more options but they always have some quality problems with the loops they use.
You can get a mechanical white noise machine and place it between your bed and where the shuttle noise comes from - that might help. I tried this when I lived in an apartment where noisy residents would slam doors and wake me up and this machine helped a lot.
It works for me. I play it using an app from my phone if I am sleeping somewhere noisy like a plane. It help drown out other noises after a few min you stop noticing it. You can buy special white noise generators https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-White-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1505950231&sr=8-3&keywords=fan%2Bnoise%2Bgenerator&th=1
Marpac Dohm-DS All-Natural White Noise Sound Machine, Tan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_T8xEzbE4KHA83
Do you have one of these? Or a normal fan? Try an actual white nose machine if your don't have one.
Also, if another unit where you live opens up you could possibly move to it without breaking your lease.
White noise machines are pretty darn amazing. I used one at my desk almost the entire time while two neighbors were renovating their homes. I work from home.... I first tried using my phone and even a set of speakers but it wasn't the same... Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Bose sound reducing technology is White Noise as well.?
A fan will probably do a better job at generating real white noise than a phone or bluetooth speaker. We started using these instead of a fan because you can tune the sound of the noise, and they use a lot less power. I use my iPhone for white noise when I'm way from the house, but otherwise I swear by the Marpac.
I agree that if you are used to the air handler, that may be a different story, but for people not used to forced air heat (like guests) the on off of the air handler is not subltle at all.
Just say you like to sleep with a fan on and use a desk fan. Box fans actually move air more quietly than a smaller fan, so for this purpose a smallish desk fan is probably best.
you aren't the only one who thinks natural noise is better noise, but thats an option too:
I really don't care if you think I'm a dick, but your lpt sucks.
I have this and it works well. If you can take white noise, this helps to drown out all outside noises and leaves you with a soothing white noise sound instead: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Natural-actual-inside-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
I got the Marpac Dohm as a gift from my grandma and I love it. It helps me and the baby fall asleep. I didn't expect to enjoy the white noise so much but it's very calming.
Marpac has been making white noise generators for years. They are used in nearly every counseling center I've ever been in (so that passers by cannot overhear a conversation, and so that outside noises don't intrude on the session).
It has two speeds and a rotating cuff that allows fine tuning. It's also a mechanical device (rather than a speaker), so it's ridiculously dependable and immune to interference.
I see no reason to reinvent the mouse trap here.
Get one of these, http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Natural-actual-inside-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1460489218&sr=8-1&keywords=dohm+sound I have a few throughout my house, it keeps a constant background white noise, which somehow helps me hear things much easier than absolute silence. Dont get a cheap sound machine, they sound like aliens trying to burrow into your house after a while.
If it's just the noise you need and not the air movement, this is the best white noise maker I've ever found. Like the reviews say, it makes a very fan-like sound but with no mechanical, rattling or cycling noises. Most white noise machines play a loop of sound, and you can hear a pattern as the loop replays. Once there's a pattern, there's something to pay attention to and your mind does not tune it out well. This creates its own noise and it is wonderful. I got it for my boyfriend who has trouble falling asleep because of tinnitus and this really helps.
I have this white noise machine and I would highly recommend it.
I really dislike the digital "white noise" that you can get in mp3 form, and not all rooms are suitable for being able to leave a giant box fan running without leaving your dog constantly windswept.
The Marpac machine has a pleasant, neutral sound and is very effective at drowning out outside sounds. I sleep with it on, as well as leaving it with my dog during the day.
If you don't have the option of sleeping in another room, do you have a white noise machine in his room? That might mask any noises you're making entering the room and getting settled into bed. I recommend this one. It's a little expensive, but SO WORTH IT. We've actually bought a second one for our own bedroom.
My girl is only 11 weeks old, so I know nothing, but I wouldn't worry about the eating in the middle of the night, either.
Good luck to you mama!
Yep! I've had this model since college and it's still working. http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1433213647&sr=8-2&keywords=white+noise+machine
There are cheaper versions and you can even get one on your phone. I haven't really liked the phone apps for this though. I use it every night and my electric bill is still under $25 a month.
No legal advice, but something like this would be a lot more comfortable long-term than earplugs will be. Personally I've found it to work better as well, but I'm mostly aiming to drown out loud tvs, dogs, and the neighbors who think 3am is a great time to have a fight over who should have put gas in the car.
A solid-core door makes a big difference. Sound travels through air. You need mass (less air) in-between. I bet sealing the crack under the door with something would help.
Also, as mentioned a white noise generator near those you don't want to disturb will really help. One like this is $50.
You should look into one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426608309&sr=8-2&keywords=white+noise+machine
The adjustments allow you to choose the exact type of fan noise/tone that you want and it's been pretty easy to travel with for me.
For many years, I have used a Marpac Sleepmate for white noise. They generate the white noise by using a fan inside the housing. You can adjust the housing on the top and sides to adjust volume and pitch. It's a little miracle machine. If you need white noise in the room, I highly recommend getting one. They travel well, too. I take it with me whenever I am away.
I used to use a fan. I finally spent the money on a white noise machine and I have to say I find it much better than the fan ever was. Give one a try if you haven't already!
This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420905048&sr=8-2&keywords=white+noise+machine
Thanks for that link, my gf bought one of these a while back and it works pretty well but this a good substitute for when she leaves that machine back at her apartment.
If it bugs you like it does me when trying to get to sleep, look into getting a white noise machine. I have this one. It's not exactly cheap, but it's well worth it. (At least as far as I'm concerned.)
Hey, when we got our dog he had the same problem. We use this
to keep the noise out of the room. He's a lot better now even without it (it takes a bit to feel more at home), but we try to remember to turn it on every night because it helps a ton. I'm actually getting better sleep too because of the white noise.
I use this to condition instant relaxation and slowed thoughts followed by sleep 5 minutes later. Concentrate on slow relaxed breathing as well helps. I'm a pretty bad insomniac so spending the couple bucks on the noise conditioner was worth it.
So looking at Google Maps (I'm not terribly familiar with the lines down in FiDi), a bunch of lines obviously converge down there. I guess it just depends on where you want to go and the value you place on being able to walk to work. For Brooklyn it's definitely better. For West Village/East Village/LES I think it's sort of a wash though (compared to 64th and Lexington). So as I said, depending on how badly you want to be able to walk to work...that and access to Brooklyn seem like the two big decision points, the more I think about it.
And, I guess, how you feel about ghost towns. I think I'd find it depressing, but if you like the idea of peace and quiet at night, I can see the appeal. Then again, I live on 110th St between Amsterdam and Broadway. Two-way street, hospital and fire department nearby, and lots of drunk people will cross between the avenues on 110th because it's well-lit and what-not.
But outside of the sirens this is easily the best $55 I've ever spent (only use it when going to bed). It doesn't block out sirens but DOES block out pretty much everything else. Seriously, unless you just can't stand the occasional siren or loud truck (you know, the sort that send out that low frequency reverberation) it pretty much nullifies any concerns about ambient noise.
this works. it's not perfect, but it will help. also, earplugs, though i rip them out when i sleep. combine the sleepmate with a fan to get more frequency coverage.
I have tinnitus as well and white noise is the only thing I've found that helps, although I found earbuds too uncomfortable and just filled my house and office with these
I bought one of these a few weeks age and its been helping me get to sleep. I've been struggling with depression for a while and it has always interfered with my sleep, which in turn makes me more depressed.
You could get a sound screen. I use mine for sleeping in, but I'm sure that it could be re-purposed to hide bathroom noises: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMate-980A-Electro-Mechanical-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291124752&sr=8-1
Second the white noise. We got https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM this model and it is incredible. Mechanical, super soothing, changed our kids sleeping habits almost instantly.
For people ITT who do it for the noise, I bought a white noise machine on Amazon that is basically a fan motor.
Go buy the Panasonic and then....
You will want one of these. It is a analog fan based white noise machine with a simple mechanical switch. You could hook it up so that it turns on when the lights or fan turn on.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM
Best thing is that you can turn it off when you don't have guests.
This is the type I've used since high school.
This. We bought wind machines early on for our kids, but they've since transitioned to just using Google Minis and thunderstorm sounds now (they are 7 and 11 and start it themselves).
One of our family members gave us a set of CDs with classical music on them and we ripped one of the CDs and put them on cheap MP3 players with speakers and would start that when we put them in bed. The consistency of that mixed with the white noise really helped quite a lot.
You could also run a fan depending on where you are in the country, but my wife wasn't big on that in the middle of winter, so we decided on the "physical" white noise machines, then moved to "digital" when that first round died.
We started with something like this, but it has a physical fan inside of it (doesn't really put off any air movement) and the fan eventually started to go bad: https://smile.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/
We then moved over to this: https://smile.amazon.com/LectroFan-Fidelity-Machine-Unique-Non-Looping/dp/B00JU8P8VY/
It took a few nights for our daughter to find a noise that she liked with the digital noise machine, as it didn't sound the same, but she likes it now.
I'd recommend started with digital at this point, as if you get physical, you are going to plan on replacing it in the future. There are also apps and such available that do similar. Just remember - if you travel, you are probably going to want to take it with you, so plan on having a "containerized" method for replicating the setup elsewhere.

The DOHM is one of the best. It's analog, so there are no loops like some digital white noise machines. It's got a LONG history - the basic design has been in use decades - so it's pretty reliable. And it's old school, so it won't stop if your phone or Bluetooth speaker run out of battery, or if you lose internet momentarily.
I've used one like this for about 20 years.
Not the one you're asking, but this is what I use. Sounds like a fan (and the sound is somewhat adjustable by turning the cover) but without the airflow.
Man, really sorry about the fact the owners dgaf. Sounds like they are miserable people who likely know their dogs are terrible, and they are driven mad by them, but they decide to be assholes that just don't deal with their issue and thus make everyone else suffer.
White noise machines in every room... I personally like a mechanical one called a Dohm that I have used for years when I have lived in noisy places (though I cannot claim to know if they work with barking). I like because it is a mechanical vs. digital sound, and it has two settings, the louder of which is pretty loud.

If it's possible... try to think about moving... on some level dealing with shitty neighbors truly does ruin quality of life.
Of course. In terms of tinnitus treatment, without a comprehensive hearing test and counseling, I would not recommend any of the following methods. In most cases, tinnitus is frequently associated with hearing loss. When you treat your hearing loss, the residual benefit is that the tinnitus is mitigated. So, without knowing whether you have a hearing loss or not, I cannot say with a high level of confidence that the following methods will have optimal results.

I'd recommend a Marpac.

For white noise I was using the Marpac Dohm for a while and really liked it. I finally just received my Kickstater award for the SNOOZ and have been using it for the last couple of nights, and I like it even more. It's lighter and smaller and the sound is a bit fuller, not to mention the fact that it can be controlled with a phone app.
I use this. $40 but small and portable -

I make sure there's always tv or music playing in the background. And white noise whenever that isn't possible -- I use a sound conditioner every night when I sleep, and a white noise app on my phone when I'm away from home. Nothing can make the ringing go away, but masking it can do wonders for your mental health.
In my case, getting a good hearing aid was really important. Amplifying everyday life sounds made me less focused on the ringing. Plus it has a white noise function that you can use standalone, or as an addition to the amplification.

There's white noise devices that simulate a fan but don't cause airflow like this one, in my case I just use a few smartphone apps..
If you like white noise while you sleep, this can drown everything out: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Natural-actual-inside-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM
These work better than either. Sounds like a fan... doesn't have to waste power moving a lot of excess air like real fan.
Just get one of these. Believe me, it makes a world of difference.

I use a white noise machine. Nothing in my ears, no ongoing expense, very adjustable as far as volume and tone/pitch.
This bad boy might be of interest then. Helps me sleep too.
I suggest this. I got it about 3 monthes ago and ti does wonders. I put it on and knock out with in 20 minutes.
white noise makers are supposed to be good

Marpac Dohm. The sound of a fan (because that's what inside) but none of the annoying air movement. Plus you can adust the tonality pretty easily.
check this out.
I am thinking of buying one of these things. it sounds like a big fan but is the size of a small... cake or something.
You need one of these, stat: http://www.amazon.com/Conditioner-Marpac-formerly-Sleepmate-980A/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357830872&sr=8-1&keywords=noise+machine
Adjustable noise level, more efficient yet louder than a fan, and doesn't blow cold air at you (oh, and no Fan Death - bonus!). I can barely sleep without mine running now. If you're a light sleeper and you haven't tried something like this, seriously give it a go.
I hope this helps someone sleep better!
How about a white noise machine. We have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMate-980A-Electro-Mechanical-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328735911&sr=8-1
It's a bit expensive, but works great.
Thats an awesome website. It could work for most of the time, but the stupid apartment above me has a really loud stereo with lots of bass that even a deaf person could feel.
I looked at getting one of these, though like your solution it wouldn't cover up the subwoofer upstairs.
