It isn't the most comfy, but the braces that lace up, have straps that cross in an x over the foot and then another strap around the ankle(you can get them at sports supply stores or some pharmacies but they look like (this)[https://www.amazon.com/Zenith-Ankle-Brace-Adjustable-Support/dp/B01LXRMR2F/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=lace+up+ankle+brace&qid=1598765822&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyREk3OVhJNlVNS09LJmVuY3J5cHR...) are the best ankle braces(like two doctors and a physical therapist actually told me this) and if I loosen the laces on my shoes a bit I can usually wear one with most shoes.
I'm so, so sorry. I too have suffered bad ankle injuries that took me away from running for a long time. I recommend Pilates -- floor Pilates can totally be done even with a badly injured ankle. I know that during the worst of my injury, swimming and even biking weren't options, and if I could go back in time I would have waited longer to return to exercise.
