I would recommend that in a few years you put about $450 into a Gretsch Catalina.
Unless she's tall for her age, you may need to buy her a starter kit (which will save you money in the mean time.)
I've just been looking for well reviewed kits on amazon. This one has a lot of video examples: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-5-Piece-Junior-Cymbals-Hardware/dp/B0033290CQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_267_8?ie=UTF8&dpID=51iLaI-9YPL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0QD7XC9NP6HGQY8YS8HY
This one seems kind of sturdy. http://www.amazon.com/Pulse-3-Piece-Deluxe-Junior-Bright/dp/B003H91E7E/ref=pd_sim_sbs_267_5?ie=UTF8&dpID=51GdynYEozL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0QD7XC9NP6HGQY8YS8HY
My recommendation here is a book, rather than an article, but it's been an extremely valuable one to me for years. Check out the aptly-named book "Drum Tuning" by Larry Nolly. Straightforward and thorough breakdown of many topics, including how the head thickness(es) and relative tuning of the batter/resonant heads affects the sound produced. His Kindle version is only $2.99...totally worth it. It was originally released in 1988 but everything is still just as relevant today.
