I would give this article a read.
It introduces the idea that the concept of tempo and putting your opponent on a clock isn't limited to any specific cards, rather the method of how you use the cards and the result of it. If you are at 9 life and I have something with 3 power I am putting you on a three-turn clock. If I have two things with 3 power and a [[Lightning Bolt]] then I am putting you on a two-turn clock.
Do you like to draft? I know it's not really that fun with just 2 people, but you can play 2 person Wizard's Tower format and make it essentially a balanced 2 person draft environment. Best of all, you can use any unopened packs you have lying around to do it, or you can build a cube from your existing collection if you want to have a custom-tailored experience.
The key takeaway is that Masterpieces can be played in any Limited format they're opened in and in any Constructed format in which the card is already legal.
Gauntlet of Power is legal in Modern, Vintage, Legacy and Commander.
If you are brand new to MTG then within your deck there should be a booklet with basic rules and such. This page should help you a lot and get you into the game.
If you are an old player coming back or somewhat familiar I would start to play either against a friend casually or by yourself, drawing and playing cards for a few turns. When you don’t know a keyword (such as Trample or Flying) look it up as you play. Make sure to read effects carefully and apply them in their most obvious since. Most of the time the effects are as literal as possible.
If you have any specific questions you can ask them here or usually a google search will help 99% of the time.
Welcome to Magic!
There should be an Open House event this weekend. If there is one near you they could teach you with free sample decks and a promo. https://magic.wizards.com/en/event-types/magic-open-house. Otherwise for casual play the Planeswalker decks are nice, or for competitive Challenger decks.
Are you just playing casual constructed, aka Kitchen Table Magic? Or are you trying to narrow it down to a format? For example, modern, standard, etc.
If it's anything goes then it's harder to help you since there are 25 years of cards to choose from. It's not impossible to build a deck from scratch but you have to pick the starting point. You'll want a theme/goal and good deck construction framework.
Let's look at theme. Green and White have a lot in common. This article from last year gives you an idea of what white and green can do. If you want to go life gain, then use sites like gatherer and scryfall to search for good cards. [[Ajani's pridemate]] [[sunbond]] stuff like that could be fun. If play aggressive or evasive green creatures you could have a deck.
For construction try the rule of nine. Start with 24 lands, then add 9 unique cards with 4 of each. Play a bit, see what needs to be changed out and go from there.
The Core 2019 set should be a great jumping on point, and the Open House is this weekend. Visit a local game store and you can continue learning the game with other new players with the new Welcome Decks, and even purchase one of the new Planeswalker Decks early. These M19 Planeswalker Decks should run $11 each and be very new-player-friendly.
The previous set, Dominaria, was also a very good set, so you're starting at a really opportune time. Welcome to the game!
If you're just going for laughs and amusement, one of you should build a "show him the door" deck. If you have access to power 9 and similar, I imagine someone could get something similar working in a vintage shell.
It revolves around the absurdity of giving your opponent the option to either kill themselves with [Door to Nothingness] or continuing the combo. I believe there is a win condition buried somewhere to force the issue in the event that they don't deem self immolation a viable survival strategy.

It wouldn't be overly competitive, would be able to make use of most of your moxen, and can involve more black cards/ramp rather than the green ramp package instead. Dark ritual solves a lot of problems from a mana fixing standpoint, so you don't necessarily need the elves in most cases. [Mycosynth Lattice] makes it so that all mana can be used for any spell.
What's better is that certain "find in their library and remove" cards aren't able to disrupt it like they normally would because the Door is in your sideboard.
Just a thought if you're going for absurd fun.
Basic Rules for Magic are available here.
As for getting more involved in the game you have a few options. First off you have Planeswalker Decks which are super easy to play and made for new players. The issue with these is your son my not find them very interesting because of how simple they are. Another option is Duel decks which are a little more complex but also more interesting to established players. A small issue is that some of them aren't balanced very well so you would have to do some googling to figure out which one to buy. Finally there are the recently released challenger decks which are premade decks based on real competitive decks in the standard format. These are pretty powerful for the price although they could be more difficult to learn with.
In addition to all of this there are a ton of tutorials on how to play available online. I suppose you could also find a LGS (local gaming store) nearby and find someone there willing to help you.
Tribal decks are often easy to build and offer lots of synergy. Goblins, Elves, and Merfolk all have lots of support and could give you lots of different builds. I built an Angel tribal and a Demon tribal primarily to fight against one another, and they do pretty well. Hit up EDHRec.com and you can search for a commander and theme that will work for you.
The preconstructed decks are also a good way to go. Not only are there some from 2017, but there are older ones, too. You can look at eBay for player-built decks that people build for new EDH players. Most can be found for under $30.
There is also the new Brawl format if you have mostly Standard-legal singles lying around. This is a 60-card singleton format that shares many of the same rules as traditional EDH.
I use a big sorting tray to sort alphabetically into my storage boxes. I personally do alphabetical by color, foils behind the nonfoil, with the card sideways to the right so that I can flip through names easier.
I use This tray from Bcw to sort.
Just a heads up, a lot of people posting on mtg subreddits don't know the contents of an intro deck by name. If you source the deck from a site like this, we can see what's in there.
The least you could do to fix up this deck is replace the vampire noble, it's just a vanilla 3/2 for 3. Then you could start getting 4 copies of your best cards. Cut out some of the weaker cards to stay at 60 for the deck. Since you're not playing a particular format you can look at what cards make/care about tokens from the past. Look for cards that care about creatures entering and exiting the battlefield.
[[intangible virtue]] [[phantom general]] [[doom traveler]] [[blasting station]] [[cathar's crusade]] [[zulaport cuthroat]] [[blood artist]]
I bought the Challenger Deck 'Vehicle Rush' for 40$ CAN last month because I came back from a MTG break with no standard cards. There's only drafts on Wednesday in my area and I wanted to play more Magic.
I went 1-2, 3-1 and 2-1 with it since then. I have no bad criticism on the product; I'm super happy with it and will recommend to anyone who just want to play some good match even against top tier stuff.
I can't comment on the 3 others ones tho.
Wizards of the Coast (the company making Magic) officially recommends two ways to start playing:
Download the free game Magic Duels https://magic.wizards.com/en/content/magic-duels and play at least the tutorial to learn the rules.
Go to a Magic Open House event, if you have any game stores near you: https://magic.wizards.com/en/event-types/magic-open-house They will give you a Welcome Deck, you can find other people who are starting the game and you have people you can ask advice for.
For two people we shuffle up 84 randomly selected cards and Winchester draft them. We've also tried many other variants, some that create stronger decks. 84 random jank cards, Winchester drafted, is probably the weakest you can get. But I love low-powered Magic, so... Go experiment!
does your kid like to open packs or does your kid want a playable deck?
Ixalan is the latest set released and thus the cards will remain in the standard format for the longest time. However if your kid or their friend doesn't play standard or go to Friday Night Magic then having cards from the latest set doesn't really apply. although the new cards are fun and cool. here is some info on the formats link
duel deck review merfolk v goblins the latest duel deck
something else to consider is the release of unstable which is a fun non-standard legal jokey set which your kid might enjoy with their friends.
personally speaking I would love to open a Ixalan Bundle (formerly known as fatpack) or even a booster box of ixalan. however if your son plays commander the latest commander preconstructed decks would also be a great gift.
> I just started playing magic, and I'm trying to decide what format I should start with....What do you recommend?
For new players, I would recommend you try some of the limited formats, since the card pool is so much smaller. Start with prerelease/sealed limited, then try Magic league, then try booster drafts.
And of course the Professor has a video, which is a bit dated, for new players titled, "How To Start Playing Magic: The Gathering - A Beginner's Guide To MTG".
Ive just got some "Art Focused" apps Ive been working on to a stage that other people might be interested in using them too, especially people into Magic Art (or any art!).
It’s a free iPhone and Android app and as well as livewallpapers it also supports static wallpapers together with a wallpaper editor and a few other goodies. :)
It doesn’t contain any wallpapers itself but you can load in any that are already downloaded to your phone or create yourself.
I was thinking of adding a creator of the month feature for anyone out there if there are any live (or static) wallpaper artists who have created something cool and would like it featured, let me know. :)
Anyway please let me know what you think and what features I should add next. :)
Its on the Apple App Store here and the Google Play Store here.
Hope you like it and thanks for reading! :)

This is affiliate link spam. Just in case anybody actually wants to buy these without supporting this spammer:

This is the batch I purchased from Amazon. There were some repeats but none more than 3 or 4. And there was a good smattering of foils, uncommons, and rares. Not the worst.
It's available for Android and iOS.
You can create creatures, instants, sorceries, enchantments, artifacts, artifact creatures, planeswalkers, lands and tokens for free :). There’s in-app purchase if you want to further create other cards, like sagas or adventures. This helps me continue the development and keep the app ad-free :).
I hope you like it!
With this setting turned on, you can also swipe left or right to decrease or increase.
Community here suggested this because some play groups are used to associate left and right to minus and plus. So in order to keep everyone happy, now you can modify it to fit your preference :)
I really appreciate all the suggestions you are giving me to keep improving the app, thank you so much!
In case you haven't heard about the app, it has these main features:
• Commander EDH damage tracking
• Track poison, commander tax, experience, mana, storm and charge counters
• Up to 6 players
• Dark mode
• Match history and sharing
• Roll virtual dice
• Battery-friendly
• Intuitive gestures: tap, pan, long press
This was a very requested feature, I hope you like it :)
One of the boxes can be used for your life, and all the other ones for counters like poison, charge, mana, etc. It supports up to 6 counters to be seen at the same time, but you can access up to 42 by using the radial menu shown in the video.
In this mode, all counters and numbers will face the player (instead of rotate to other players).
I also added user defined starting life. I really appreciate all the feedback and will continue to improve the app based on your suggestions, thanks!! :)
Everything already suggested is great besides maybe any commander recommendations solely for the fact that learning the game through Commander probably wouldn't be ideal. After a few months of experience and if y'all stay playing I'd say go for it.
In the mean time I highly recommend the Game Night bundle. It's a great start with equal powered decks and variety and you can easily play a few months with everyone rotating decks and learning the game for minimal investment.
Here you go. It's only 80 lands and a handful of rares. the rest are common and uncommon, but if you just want casual play like I do, it's a great deal. I only had a few duplicates too. I spent the past two days sorting them and making decks and I definitely got my money's worth.

This set would make a great add-on to that set: 100 Magic the Gathering Non-Basic/Special Lands-- MTG Bulk Mixed Lot Collection.
I can't seem to find any planechase apps for Android. There's this one, but it seems that it crashes on boot now.
Anyone know of good ones?
