If you have time to read a book beforehand, read Venture Deals. It’s not necessarily a fun or easy read, but it goes into GREAT detail in how these deals work and how to negotiate them.

Once you’ve read that, get an attorney. These are not waters you want to navigate on your own. SAFEs are generally very easy documents (and could very well be your best option), and if your attorney is willing, you might be able to draft the SAFEs yourself and just have them provide counsel on the deal before it’s signed.

Early investors can make or break your company, speaking from experience. Choose them wisely and cover your bases.
