Like some other posters I also got a cheap one off of Amazon. I found that the gears would sometimes not connect properly and it wouldn't spin. I also found that every cake had to be small, it was hard to wind a whole regular sized Skien. I would have to cut and wind them in two. I decided to upgrade to a quality winder This one. It can wind large cakes without issue. It also has metal gears, so they don't just run over each other without spinning. It has a nice smooth sound too. I've wound over 150 balls of yarn in the last 6 months and it is still going strong!
So I honestly don’t know what yarn you’re talking about, but I was curious so I tried googling to help. Still didn’t find it, but I did find this book of Disney themed patterns that I personally don’t own, but might be helpful? And I found this yarn that gives me similar vibes. It has the dark blue and purpleish at least.
A yarn bag- im always on the go and i take my crochet with me- i have this one-

Agree on not gifting yarn. Even for myself, I've learned to not buy yarn unless I have a specific idea/pattern in mind.
I'd just have a frank conversation with him about what kind of tools he has and desires. I would rather get exactly what I wanted versus be surprised.
As far as ideas about things you can ask about, these are things I can't do without:
The best way is to use an umbrella swift. It's an investment, but if you use yarn that comes in hanks often, it's worth having.
Before I bought one I would either trade duty with my sister holding the open loop of yarn while the other did the winding, or borrow my nephew's TinkerToys to make a fake swift.
I made a separate top level comment for anyone following looking for ideas too, but now I'm liking the idea of honeycomb shelving (https://i.pinimg.com/1200x/49/0c/3f/490c3f3fb307cb46ccb9f55b0456080c.jpg). I don't have a crazy amount of yarn, so I really like something like this too (but it's pretty pricey): https://www.amazon.com/Kalalou-KALCMX2287-Wall-Shelf-Brown/dp/B01H893Q42/ I could put the yarn in the center section and books and accessories on the sides. Wish it was in a silver color instead of gold. I realize it only has one star but it also only has one review :-/
Just had another idea - honeycomb shelves. Something like these: https://www.amazon.com/MyGift-Rustic-Hexagon-Wall-Mounted-Shelves/dp/B07GNQ3H49
I would want to put them close together to look like an actual honeycomb. Suppose I need to measure some skeins to figure how deep they would need to be.
