I've been a huge fan of Frictional Games, a tiny indie videogame development company based in Sweden, for a few years now. So far, they've made two excellent Lovecraft-inspired horror games (the Penumbra series and Amnesia: The Dark Descent), which now sit as some of my favorite games of all time. If you like horror videogames, give these a shot!
Try Amnesia: The Dark Descent,Eldritch and Magrunner: Dark Pulse. It's hard to hit that perfect Lovecraft vibe but those games do a great job (especially Amnesia, seriously just play it). Also Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is worth a play through (as previously mentioned), the bugs are manageable and the story is pretty good.
Most modern video games are filled with near-cinematic quality cutscenes... take those out and you've saved a huge chunk of money. Check out Amnesia: The Dark Descent for a lower-budget game that does great without a single cutscene. It's on sale on Steam for ten bucks right now.

yes
FUCK EVERYTHING about this game.
really fucking good but if you play it with headphones, alone in the dark, you will piss yourself and probably be rocking yourself to sleep for a few days.
I find it hard to believe you know about reddit and never heard of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, arguably the scariest game ever made. Get it, you won't regret. Gameplay is exactly like shown in the trailer.
As a more classic choice: I love System Shock 2. It's a FPS/RPG mix... pretty hardcore with full-blown inventory management, a skill system and pretty long. It previously held my personal top spot for "scariest game ever". The sound design alone is amazing. Check out this guide for running it on a modern computer.
The whole game is avoiding monsters and trying not to lose your sanity. When you are in the dark you slowly go insane, hearing voices footsteps and other things that are not really there. You stay in the light and you become an easy target for monsters.
The game is available for Linux, yo just can't buy it on steam have to order it from their website http://www.amnesiagame.com/#main
