If you are making a game, that will entail binary assets. SVN will deal with binary assets much better than git will.
Since you are on windows I would recommend the Tortoise SVN client, which is a very nice piece of software. git is harder to get up and running on windows I always find (the git shell is nice though).
If you can afford it, buy some off-site hosting. I have used Codesion in the past (http://codesion.com/products/team-edition.html#pricing - $7/month). This will mean that you don't have to worry about backups so much, since the code is stored by them too.
I always install a better diff program though (my personal faviourites are SourceGear DiffMerge (free) and Araxis Merge (expensive). You can go into the Tortoise SVN settings and make it use an external program for diffs.
In terms of process, I suggest that you commit often, and always always always look at the diffs before you commit anything.

Good luck! If you have any problems with SVN, come back to this thread.
