You've already gotten a lot of good suggestions, I'd also recommend CrunchBang++. It's based on Debian stable and uses the OpenBox window manager rather than a full desktop environment. It shouldn't require much tweaking at all, and I found it to be a solid choice on even lower-end hardware.
> Really you would need to upgrade the ram in order to use it on the internet.
I have to agree with this as well.
I can suggest a dozen lightweight distros, but the minute you launch Chromium or Firefox, you're going to negate all of the benefits of minimalism. Firefox currently takes 3x more memory (running 4 tabs) than Gnome Shell which is arguably one of the heaviest destkop environments there is right now.
The modern web requires modern hardware.
This bothers me greatly, but it is what it is. :(
That said, my suggestion would be Crunchbang++. It's based on Debian Stable and uses Openbox as the default window manager. It's a good starting point for tweaking a minimal system if you're not comfortable starting with a base install and adding things in.
Been there. Makes the light distro and destop all the more important. If AntiX doesn't scratch your it's CrunchBang++ might do it It's Openbox with Tint2, something I use a lot even on my main machine.
that's an interesting addition. i'd like to point out that /r/archlinux has 46000 subscribers, though, putting it just between OSX and Windows.
however, this really only shows how many people use reddit as a forum for a certain topic. an interesting case for this would be comparing /r/BunsenLabs and /r/crunchbangplusplus - cbpp has about 50% more subscribers, but crunchbangplusplus.org uses reddit as their sole forum, whereas bunsenlabs.org has their own forum that is much more active than cbpp's subreddit.
Well I reckon there really is a linux distro for everyone/thing. Just found https://www.crunchbangplusplus.org/ Deb 11 based and openbox pre-configured. Distrowatch says it was discontinued years ago (2013?) but it's still current on their website and supported.
You can use the grey variant of the kora icon theme. You can also use the faenza icon theme. I believe the latter is used in the Crunchbang ++ distribution, which is Debian-based and has a monochrome aesthetic to it, so it may give you some cues for your ricing project.
I have a 2007 thinkpad. I've run both Lubuntu and crunchbang++ on it. They've both worked fantastically. Both are Debian-based so lots of software compatability. Highly recommend. Crunchbang was especially fast because of the minimal Window Manager.
BunsenLabs is still using Debian 9, while CrunchBang++ is based on Debian 10. They're basically the same given that both distros are just continuations of the original Crunchbang (RIP).
While I normally would agree with the suggestion of Void, since OP is still a bit of a noob I'm a bit concerned about the default installer. Since it requires manual partitioning (unless something has changed since I last used it) it might be a bit trickier than he needs right now. With that in mind, Debian Netinstall seems like a good fit to me, then he can install a WM of his choice.
Try CrunchBang++! I used the original CrunchBang on a laptop with even worse specs and it ran very smoothly, it's designed to not need much power. Also, it's based on Debian Stable so you won't get frequent updates.
