This site is very helpful in regards to your problem:
Transfer to Namesilo ($15.99/yr on that TLD) then renew for 9 years to have it registered for the next 10 years.
You also don't have to pay for 'Whois' protection with them which will save you 3 bucks a year if you're using it at Namecheap.
Trying to access the domain in your browser will only tell you if a website is set up on it or not. It could still be registered by someone, but just not have a website or DNS records set up.
Even domain whois records aren't 100% reliable, especially on the new gTLDs.
The best way to check availability is with a registrar, i.e. Namesilo, name.com or Namecheap or on some other type of domain availability checker page like https://www.domcomp.com/ ...but not Go Daddy, fuck them.
Umm, that is pretty common with domain registration. Check this site for actual price comparison and not just first year (See the renewal tab). And you can pretty clearly see 1&1 is not the cheapest option for any popular tld.
Sorry to hear that, that really sucks. I've heard a lot of poor experiences from GoDaddy.
If you have a min you should copy paste your experience in the review section here: https://www.domcomp.com/reviews - might help other people looking to register.
They are not actually cheap, in comparison to your other mid registrars: https://www.domcomp.com/tld/com - about two thirds of the way own the list. Not to say they are not good though, just saying that price-wise, they are not actually that great.
If you're looking to register, you should definitely check out www.domcomp.com first.
It compares prices across most domain registrars and includes info about Privacy.
Price isn't everything, you should also check out their review section.
The hosts on the sidebar are worth checking out. Any of their shared plans between $5-10/mo are more than suitable for a Wordpress site that's just starting out.
As for picking a registrar, this site shows where it might be the cheapest:
Price wise Namesilo is the cheapest for .com/.net. $8.99/year with free privacy protection.
Their panel is decent, albeit dated. Don't know about support as I never needed it.
Namecheap gets a lot of recommendation, but I've never used them.
For the newer TLDs you should check out TLD-list or DomComp to see who offers it the cheapest.
Ignore pretty much anybody in this thread saying a specific registrar (although, seriously, Namesilo). If you want to know what the best registrar for any TLD is, go to https://www.domcomp.com/ and click "renew" (to filter out all the "first hit is free" bait-and-switch cheap scams).
Namecheap have been pretty good. I concur with the stuff here: https://www.domcomp.com/reviews/namecheap
There website has been pretty unresponsive for me, today, though - I think it might be due to heavy load on their servers from visitors wanting these deals!
Yo, definitely sounds like you should check out https://www.domcomp.com. just CTRL-F 'nyc' to see prices from the most popular providers.
If you click on the nyc on the left hand column you can even get a list, ordered by price!
You can see that the tabs on the top cover all of New, Transfer and Renewal prices.
Can't really add to the hardware part. I suggest you start with a Pi4 8GB RAM and look how it goes. You should use it with an SSD storage...

>In addition, I guess I would have to buy a domain right?
Ideally, yes. Owning a domain makes a lot of things easier.
>Is there a way I can pay once and have it for life?
There seem to be some free-tier stuff, but i never cared. The closes thing to "pay once and have it for live" that I know (and thus can recommend) is the 10yr .eu Offer that Netim.com has every few months. They sell an .eu for ~12€+tax (~14€) for 10yrs.
As i'm not sure whether you are an EU resident, or have some legal representation there (which would be a precondition), I recommend tools like https://www.domcomp.com/ to search for TLDs that are cheap to renew.
When buying a domain ALWAYS look at the renewal cost! Most offers are very cheap (0,99-9,99€/$) in the first year and then the annual renewal cost is much more expensive (>20$/€). As for the choice of TLD, it depends what you want to do. If you want a slight look of professionalism, don't go for the fancy new generic once, but the traditional .com, .org, .net, .us(?) ... or any other ccTLD.
As a beginner I would have appreciated to know more about renewal cost. Always keep them in mind!
https://www.domcomp.com/ is a great tool to compare prices.
I'm not affiliated with Netim.com, but they have .eu sale twice a year where they offer a .eu domain for 12€ for 10(!) years (+ Tax) - unbeatable, IMHO. Apparently last sale was a few days ago, so it will be April/May again until the next, i suppose.
Otherwise it was already mentioned: the traditional .com, .net, .org are fairly stable in price.
Get cheapest possible tld. Use this price comparison website: https://www.domcomp.com/
Once you have got your domain, you need hosting. Head over to Web hosting talk forums shared hosting offers and get a cheap hosting.
Once you have got both, you can start your blog using WordPress.
Se quiser .com.br basta ter CPF https://registro.br
Se quiser .com basta ter CC para pagar pelo domínio. Tem várias empresas que fazem esse serviço.
Ex:
https://www.domcomp.com/
eu uso o https://namesilo.com e domínio .com para manter minha privacidade e não mostrar meus dados pessoais. Caso for criar um .com.br alguns dos seus dados pessoais vai ficar visível.
I use NameSilo and I've been really happy with them. Some registrars are cheap for the first year but then really increase prices for renewals, so keep that in mind. Some popular registrars and their prices for .com TLDs: https://www.domcomp.com/tld/com
I use NameSilo, but otherwise use one of these search engines to find the cheapest registrar for the domain name you're looking to purchase: https://tld-list.com/ https://www.domcomp.com/
https://www.domcomp.com/ tracks various registrars and shows the cheapest places to register a new domain, renew a domain, and transfer a domain.
At the moment it's saying .com's can be registered at 1&1 for 12 months for $1 (although renewal becomes $15 per year with that particular registrar).
Then they can they be transferred for $7.39 (which will include 12 months of registration).
It's always best to look at 3 to 5 year costs (if you plan on holding onto the domain for that length of time) because the initial 'cheap' price may jump up on renewal (as is the case with 1&1 above).
Cloudflare is in the process of becoming a registrar and won't charge any markup on their domain registrations/renewals.
You can also use a service like domcomp to find the best deals based on your TLDs:
If you find a solution, do let us know :) I have massive problem with this my site. In fact, I wrote a short blog about the first time I encountered the issue https://www.domcomp.com/blog/someone-copied-our-site-again-but-its-ok.html
This is the only domain price comparator I know: https://www.domcomp.com/
It works with all the domains and most of the domain providers.
In addition, if you add a freebie html website and a free hosting like github you can get a one dollar website (or even cheaper):
http://theonedollarwebsite.com/
Hope it inspires you :D
Use your HOSTS file and set it to whatever domain you want for free. Learning how to utilize the HOSTS file is a good idea though and will come in handy if you ever do any kind of migrations.
If you want to register an actual domain then this site is good at identifying the cheapest:
-Get a top level domain. Subdomain are not serious and hence people will trust you less. If the money is a problem to you use https://www.domcomp.com/
-Dont write long text. Most people are stupid, then you have the lazy ones, and then the ones that does not have time. Try to make their work more easy with short sentences. Then link them to the big explanation in other place if they are really curious.
Yeah weird, but seems to be consistent with other registrars: https://www.domcomp.com/
Uniregistry has it for $2 which I'm sure has some catch if not just lie. Namesilo is the 2nd cheapest. Namecheap is $2488.
Try this link for comparing prices for different extensions: https://www.domcomp.com/ Just put .media in the search field. I suggest against using 1&1 because of their famous bad support. You can use namesilo - they have free lifetime whois protection if you need it. They also have a 1$ discount with promo code 1MINUS
Hosting varies based on the specs of the machine you get. If it's just a personal / side project then you won't need much in terms of power. I'd look for stuff around $20.
For domain names, what you get is just the name so the product doesn't vary. The only thing to choose between is the service - and that's subjective. I've heard horror stories of EVERY provider. However, here's the best resource to help you https://www.domcomp.com price comparisons across across all providers.
From my personal experience, NameSilo and Namecheap have served me decently.
I have had similar bad experience with BigRock... and after searching, it seems like I am not the only one: https://www.domcomp.com/reviews/bigrock My experience was almost the same as the RegistrarFail guy's, on the review page.
I can recommend NameSilo as a good alternative. Or, you can check out other registrar's prices at https://www.domcomp.com
Since apparently we're making top-level posts instead of just upvoting existing ones:
Ignore anybody in this thread saying a specific registrar. If you want to know what the best registrar for any TLD is, go to https://www.domcomp.com/ and click "renew" (to filter out all the "first hit is free" bait-and-switch cheap scams).
This will show that NameSilo has the best prices for the most common TLDs, and I would recommend them, but, hey, that's a job for a separate post.
The integration with domcomp.com to get the cheapest prices, on expiry, is very unique. I've tried many domains, a couple of the newer tld extensions didn't work but the majority did. Great site, will definitely recommend.
When you do get round to it, could i recommend https://www.domcomp.com/ - click on the Transfer tab :)
Also - the namecheap deal is kind of weird, they are rotating it per hour so you gotta keep checking back to see if that domain deal is live.
Don't know if this is quite what you're looking for, but a good site to compare prices is https://www.domcomp.com/. It's made my someone who visits this sub, I've found it to be a big help when looking at pricing.
Why haven't you registered them yet? You can get all three for $1.49 each on godaddy according to this:
Now you risk someone ordering them and asking you for a lot of money to give them to you.
Almost finished with Provider hiding feature. Additionally, I've just added a Provider review feature. Would be cool if you could add you're experiences with 1&1! https://www.domcomp.com/reviews/1&1
Further to the previous answer if you are going to buy a domain name separately (that is through a domain registrar) a user on this sub has created this site to help you find the best price: https://www.domcomp.com/
I use NameSilo myself who aren't on that list. The interface ain't the best but then again you only need set it up once and you're done as far as they're concerned. They are, however, cheap and reliable.
