I come from a game dev background which is similar in that 99% of games created, nobody cares about or pays for. There have been a few "lottery winners" like the guy who made Minecraft -- but for the most part, indie game dev is unpaid.
But -- I want to give you a 2nd perspective: as average income increases, or as total population increases, so do the total amount of consumers. As media formats and genres are created and expanded, so too are the niches one can fill for profit. I find solace in the fact that I don't have to make the next Minecraft to be reasonable successful (successful being ~$50k/year). Other game devs like Michael Brough (http://www.smestorp.com/), Robert Topala (of http://www.robtopgames.com/), etc. are making a living on games I feel like I have the capacity to make.
I listened to an episode of Singularity Bros recently that featured Kevin Kelly of Wired magazine. He has written a fair amount on this type of thing. I encourage you to check out his article on the importance of getting 1,000 true fans. If making music is what you want to do, I encourage you to stick with it. :)
