Unfortunately, if you can't prove ownership of the account and/or WordPress. com site, they likely won't be able to help you. There's no harm in contacting them, but I wouldn't expect much. Obviously they have to be 100% certain you are the account owner and site owner before they delete or make changes. Obviously the problem is they likely emailed you all the info you need to prove you're the owner. If you no longer have access to that email address, or that information I would assume there is little to nothing they can do to help. Their account recovery forms reiterate this.
For the avatar issue, have you tried to login with the wordpress name or Google/gmail account at gravatar.com? It's possible the wordpress.com account is linked to a Gravatar (or could be) via gravatar.com. You may be able to change it there. You may have linked your google/gmail account via a gravatar account long ago that you don't remember creating. Worth a try.
Automattic, owns WordPress and Gravatar so they steer you toward signing in with a wordpress account if you have one. They want you to create a wordpress account to use Gravatar, Wordpress and all their other services. You use one login for all their stuff. So Gravatar and Wordpress are separate.
On the Gravatar login page if you scroll down there are options to "Continue with Google" and also an option to request an automatic login link be emailed to your email. Since you claim your current Gmail account is displaying the gravatar there's a small chance that gmail account is the one linked to the Gravatar account. So you should be able to login in with the google account for your gmail address or possibly by using the "Email me a login link" and entering your gmail address. If you used the gmail account or email address then you should receive an email. That should allow you to log in at gravatar.com and change your gravatar image.
I'm not 100% sure gmail uses gravatar. Are you sure at some point in the past you didn't put that same cartoon image as your gmail profile photo? If you did, you may need to change your Gmail profile photo to get it to stop showing in gmail.

If you never made the image your google profile photo then that gmail must be the one you used to upload Gravatar. Those are the only two reasons your current gmail address would be displaying the unwanted image: either you or someone uploaded it as your gmail profile photo, or gmail is pulling the image from Gravatar because you linked that gmail account in the past.
You don't. The gravatar is tied to the email address. If you want to use a different image, use a different email address.
Gravatars are global, they're not in your WordPress install, they're on gravatar.com.
Are you referring to the avatar/thumbnail for your user profile in WordPress?
To choose a photo for that you have to do it via Gravatar.com and link your admin email address to Gravatar. If you don't want to do that there are plugins or you can simply use one of the cheesy default avatars WP provides.

Tip!: If you already have a Gravatar associated with the email address you use for your Plex account, that will automatically be used as your Plex account’s avatar. You can, of course, specify a new one on your Account page.
Really?? This guy looks like one of those trolls on YouTube
