I know it could easily be XP classic by the start bar, but look at the recycle bin icon behind the window. It looks a lot more like the Win2000 recycle bin than it does like the XP recycle bin

NTFS is good news -- you should have much more luck. Also have a look at HandyRecovery. While it costs, the demo version will at least tell you whether it can find stuff.
