Yes, it is. They deem new version "released" when all images for all architectures are built and pushed to official server. Generating all images alone may take better part of a day (I think that last time it took ≈14 hours, but they found a bug during release and had to re-generate all images from scratch).
Maybe check out this page or stop by and say "Hi" on irc (directions on the linked to page) if you had something particular in mind. It's a Free software project (no cathedral model), everyone involved is super nice, and there's no elitist rockstar crap going on.
//edit: In case you're wondering how I know all this, I'm not involved (can't code) but I'm on a federated social network and so are most of them so I follow (there's a federated mediagoblin group too) and see a lot of public posts on my timeline...they're all really awesomely nice and welcoming :)
>i should stop, i hate criticizing other peoples work like that
No. no, I get what you're saying and by fundraising industry standards it is lacking.
That's the thing though, when you see an ad for the eli lilly seach for the cure foundation or whatever you're seeing an ad produced by a billion dollar industry and by professionals who have built careers on mastering the art of persuasion (in some cases I can see how this is a necessary need for some charitable orgs but not for all).
You'd be right to call out the quality of the promo video had a professional fundraising consultancy been hired, I'm just pointing out that there wasn't.
Mediagoblin is not searching for the cure to cancer, diabetes, or whatever. They're only asking for 35k because it just needs that little bump to keep going right now. It's not going to be a lifelong pursuit to sustain a career for anyone so I see why the decision was made to just ask outright for what is honestly needed right now. Tee hee the lead hand (or whatever you call them in programming circles) even delayed the campain to avoid competing with a similar project. Ha Ha I could imagine a professional fundraiser just flipping their shit over that move! They're honestly just trying to get enough funds to keep a great project alive.
Now, just because they made the decision not to hire a professional consultancy that would provide a professional script/voice over doesn't mean they're not likely to be open to it if someone with that skillset offered :)
Just so you know, supporting those two is tricky at the moment. So we are unlikely to add it as an option unless there is a high demand.
Explanation: We are incorporated through Software in the Public Interest (SPI), and as far as I know they haven't made an official statement on the matter. Instead, I can tell you that a similar organization, the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), has provided an explanation saying that depending on how bitcoin/dogecoin are viewed they can't hold them for member organizations. They see it as risky and requiring a lot of administrative overhead. None of those objections are specific to SFC so we have no reason to think that SPI would see it any differently.
Here is an example of SFC talking about bitcoin: https://identi.ca/bkuhn/note/89CRDJjPQeuz5EuMVIhj3A
Now, there is at least one alternative to accepting the coins themselves, we could convert the bitcoins to USD at the point of donation using a service like this: https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-for-charities
I would need to look into that more before I can say anything definite.
You can help fix that: https://identi.ca/main/register :)
If you use a reasonable client (e.g., gwibber), you should be able to mostly seamlessly use both identi.ca and Twitter simultaneously. Or so I'm told, not being a Twitter user.
Used Diaspora and Identi.ca (before pump.io) in the past. The problem is that many of those platforms feel like echo chambers. You mainly meet people also interested in free culture / foss and who value the open platforms. Also there was a spam problem, lots of bot accounts just repeating news messages. Your family won't be there, your friends won't be there. So it feels a bit lonely in my experience.
It might fall in the scope of OpenHatch...they are starting to do science oriented events so conceivably a corresponding opportunity finder would make sense.
I'd be surprised if there aren't multiple citizen science sites attempting to implement an idea like yours (I don't know the field well, just speculation) but of course the key is to get to a critical mass. I'll try to direct some people to this question.
> TL;DR Twitter is evil.
This is where we point out that alternatives exists.
StatusNet (nowadays GNU Social) is a protocol spoken by tons of federated microblogs and social networks out there, including sites like identi.ca, quitter.se and many more. "Federated" means, in this case, that you can sign up at any one of them (i.e. decide who you trust with your data) and still be able to communicate with friends and family using other servers. Very much like e-mail.
If you get your own self-hosted website up someday and want to explore open-source stuff, check out http://ostatus.org/
The argument against Twitter and Facebook is that they're gated communities (blocking off their own content from general searches of the internet, so that Facebook can run their own ads). Also, the companies that own these services can take our stuff down whenever they want. If we use software like ostatus (which lets our individual installations talk to each other), then we can keep our own data/media/conversations belonging to ourselves and archive it ourselves and stuff. I don't know that much about the "federated social web" but I'm just starting. My own private status.net instance is up at http://status.judytuna.com , and I follow some people in my RL community on their own instances that can talk to each other cuz we all use the same protocol. (Since everybody else I know is on Twitter, I set it up so that everything I post on my tuna status thingy also gets automatically posted on my twitter. It's supposed to be able to fetch my twitter friends' feeds too, but I don't know how to set that up, lol) There's also https://identi.ca/ ... that's like the twitter of status.net/ostatus stuff, haha. Anyway, have fun out there =)
