I have basically the same setup, but with some tweaks.

• Make 2 user accounts on your PC. One account should be your regular, password-protected account. The other should be without password and without admin-privileges, so that the thief can easily use this account.
• On the account without password, I installed the following components: A keylogger, a program that automatically takes a screenshot every 5 minutes, and a program that automatically takes a picture with the webcam every 5 minutes.
• All files from those 3 programs are saved in the dropbox that is linked to a separate dropbox account, and the folders are shared with my main dropbox account. "Show desktop notifications" should be deactivated.
• Booting from DVD, network or USB are disabled in the Bios, which is password protected.

Basically, this gives you a laptop that you and your guests can use normally (without any permanent keylogging). If the laptop is stolen, the thief can't access your personal files (--> password protected user account), but he can user the other account without any problems. However, he can't format the hard disk (no admin-privileges) or install a new system (--> Bios-password).

Additionally, via dropbox, you'll get regular pictures of the thief, together with screenshot and keylogs.

Fortunately, I've never had the chance to put the system to the test... ;)

This exact same thing happened to me last year. My wife accidentally left open some emails that she was sending to her long time "friend". I found out that they had slept together once shortly before we met, and she was telling him she fantasized about sleeping with him at night and all sorts of things that were really hard to read.

I installed a keylogger on my laptop (http://kidlogger.net/) since she used my laptop to send her emails while I am at work (she stays home with our two children) to monitor her activity, as I wanted to know if she had cheated on me, or was planning to, and I believe that I have a right to know such information if I know for a fact that something bad is going on. I didn't confront her about it right away because I wanted to know if she was going to cheat on me. It was the worst 6 months of my life.

Finally during an unrelated argument I couldn't hold it in any more and exploded and told her how I knew all about her boyfriend and her love letters. Worst of all were all the lies that she said in them about me. She told him how she would always have to initiate intimacy, when in reality she refuses to be intimate with me at all, claiming that it hurts too much, and all sorts of other little lies to make me look like I have been neglecting her.

She broke off all communication with him, as far as I know at least, but our relationship still isn't that great, and I can tell she has little to no interested in me, especially romantically. I'm not going to leave her because we have two kids and we don't fight all the time or anything, there just isn't any romance or intimacy. Anyway, just confront her about it, holding it in will literally kill you inside until you explode like I did, and that's not the way to do it, especially if you have kids.

KidLogger is a freeware open-source option for you to use, it runs as a standalone program and in my test seems to work quite well.

It doesn't seem to care what browser you use, and doesn't create a task bar icon either, very transparent. http://kidlogger.net/download.html
