I use Legacy. http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ The standard edition is free. I store all my data in it and can create a web site that I post online.
For many years I was a paid subscriber to Acestry.com while doing my research but posting all my info for them to sell to others always left a bad taste in my mouth. Plus you are limited to what you can save at Ancestry.com.
Crap, just discovered the discontinued the software. It was called Personal Ancestry File or PAF. If you use torrents you might be able to find a version floating around PAF5.2 seems to have been the latest incarnation.
Apparently this one is similar with a free and paid version: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp
Sorry about recommending defunct software, my bad.
There was a webinar today about finding the living called Reverse Genealogy. I slept late and will be watching the recording later, so I don't know what's in it, but it can't hurt to watch. It's available free until May 7th.
Hashtags are a new feature of the latest release of Legacy Family Tree, the app I use. They had tags before, but you were limited to 9. Now there are an unlimited number of hashtags, and I'm finding so many uses for them, many of the same ones you want, military, immigrant (I'm going to add country of origin, thanks!), and others like interesting marriage note, and born after father died (yes, that's a thing in my tree). They also have new cause of death reports, the ancestor chart showing cause of death is a nice way to follow the cause down the various lines. See http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/WhatsNew9.asp
Legacy's free version isn't really a trial. It's fully functional, and you can use it indefinitely, but several useful advanced features are missing. They have a comparison chart here: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp
Genealogy. You learn so much not only about yourself and your family, but also about the world and human existence overall. You can also learn about your predecessors' lifestyles and habits, and that can be terrific perspective as you live and improve yours. Start with what you know - your parents, uncles, aunts etc. Work backwards. Look up census and grave records, and search obituaries and other documents. It can get to be VERY addicting.
Free sites to get started: familysearch.org (terrific site); findagrave.com
Free family tree software: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
I have been using Legacy Family Tree for about 10 years now. It is mostly free, the do have "premium" features (I've yet to need any of them) but it has been a good program for me, I currently have over 4102 unique names and many more entries. you can download it from them here: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
I'm using V7.5 and have not yet upgraded to V8, so I don't know if there are recent changes, but I doubt it.
I've been using the free version of http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/. It does everything I need including import/export if GED files, tag images, etc. It runs on my computer and I create a web site of my tree and post it online for everyone to view. Here is an example. That's not strictly web-based.
I guess you should try Geni like the others suggested. Its okay I guess if you're a paying customer and your tree is not very large. It's also nice if you have others in your family that would participate and help update the tree. Our tree on Geni has reached its maximum size without paying money and for any person in the tree that doesn't have a death date or divorce date, everyone still gets birthday and anniversary notices in email. But its free to try.
