This will require quick fault detection as well as accurate RCA. Try MindArray Minder 4.0. Its quick to deploy, with700+ reports. Completely unified platform for your infrastructure.
MindArray monitors everything from a single unified platform, and also provide you a single view over physical, virtual and cloud server elements with advance root-cause analysis reports that extend server insight into SSH, WMI and SNMP performance metrics, beyond response time and availability.
I partly agree with you, it is convenient to get the alerts in e-mails or the phone and then we can dig deeper from there.
However this will not really work when it comes to pro-active monitoring, for example keeping a watch over the trend patterns. So let’s say you want to track critical business service, it’s almost impossible to find the culprit across different layers (network/sever/app) from the alerts.
Check out Minder for more information. It will go one step ahead and correlate the information for you, making it easier to drill down and take actions.
That gives me an idea, you can project the SLA assigned to this business service on a large screen to show everybody how good your support team is.

We use MindArray Minder to monitor ESXi. It supports SNMP as well as VMWare APIs for monitoring. If you are looking for exhaustive statistics then I would suggest to go for VMWare API based monitoring. VMWare API allows you to capture much more information from MIBs, which cannot be done by SNMP and even basic control operations are possible by VMWare API which is not possible using SNMP.
We are using Mindarray ipm (http://www.mindarraysystems.com) for storage reporting, capacity planning, and monitoring for a virtual environment. MindArray IPM for monitoring/configuration/log/compliance/sla management. Does auto-baselining and doesn't do the usual hourly/weekly/monthly data roll-up that most tools use, so you can go back months and still have 5-minute (or less if you use high-frequency pollers) granularity. Can also do polling application bits like WMI, JMX, etc. Has build-in widgets for most compliance and you can also create custom ones to report them on your private dashboard.
A little late, but check out MindArray www.mindarraysystems.com for monitoring performance, compliance and configuration. It'll automate nearly every aspect of your monitoring.
