For a desktop? I never got the built in (deja-dup) backup to work reliably and it was kind of limited.
I've gone to CloudBerry Backup. It's simple and flexible. I back up one copy of data from my laptop to a local NAS box and another to AWS. It cost me $50, one-time charge. https://www.msp360.com/backup.aspx
They have a free trial you can download and test for 15 days.
I used to work for Veritas selling NetBackup, so I wanted something that would let me keep multiple copies of my data including one offsite. This checks the boxes without being complicated or overly expensive. I'm not affiliated with the company, just a happy customer.
I use cloudberry backup which I have pushing to amazon S3 glacier. Depending on amount of data initial backup can take a long time but it is the cheapest per gig Backup Soloution I’ve found so far.
