Maybe something from here, http://www.newsreaders.com/unix/utilities.html
But I don't know of a good cli newsreader, I'm sure there is one out there.
I've heard good things about PAN http://pan.rebelbase.com/
Alt.binz and Grabit do not include a text reader unless that's a recent change. Those are binary download clients.
Any email client will do the job, but many do not include additional features.
OP needs something like Pan, which is an open source cross platform dedicated newsreader with SSL/TLS, NZB, and yENC support.

It looks like the interface was given a refresh recently.
> Unusable, read-only web interface
I agree with you and /u/ReneFroger that mailing lists are an overall poor "project management system" nowadays. But for this particular point, you can use various newsreader programs with Gmane if you don't like its web interface (which I don't). Personally I use Pan.
Oddly, it's uk.d-i-y - there's a few people in there who know a great deal about the uk electrical grid. One of them runs the gridwatch site.
To read usenet - I use PAN (which is a open source clone of Agent if you remember that?) with a free account from https://www.eternal-september.org/

That sounds like a good shout. Cheer. I take it this is what you are referring to (I am on Windows, not Linux but looks like they have a version on that page):
I don't usually pull headers, but when I do, I use Newsleecher. I don't care for the DRM but I greatly prefer its UI over NewsBin.
Give PAN a try as well - it is free and open source, now supports SSL. Mac/Win/Linux.
