> Is there a good place to get an overview of analytics for newbies and/or indies?
Sure there is. We have the education center where you can find a lot of interesting webinars about analytics for newbies.
> Can you go more in depth into how you got to the position you are in now? It sounds like a terribly fascinating cross-disciplined job that i'd love to do someday.
Well it was a bit of luck. I started working as an analyst in Xsolla payment service which works with games. Then I joined Tanki Online game, and it was really luck for me, because both of the companies are based in the city where I live.
I gained a lot of experience there, and now I can work as an universal analyst to help another games to earn more.
> What are some things most devs would miss without analytics?
First, devs would miss the reasons why players leave the game and the points where they do it. Analytics can show these bottlenecks. In this case analytics can show to devs where their mistakes are.
Second, devs would miss the reasons why do players pay. Analytics can show the IAP stats, the distributions of payments by level etc. In this case analytics can show to devs where their success comes from, so devs would have an opportunity to repeat it.

Tanki Online. I've played about every web browser game out there, Tanki is hands down my favorite. Two things that separate this game from others: 1. The social aspect. Basically you can talk live with other players during a tank battle 2. Every month or so, the team at Tanki changes settings to all guns to make warfare more fair.
Free unity/flash 3D tank game with upgrades, level ups, and full MMO. Constantly updating, great community.
Click "fight", create an account, and play it for a bit. It's worth it!
