Its just an app that loads the facebook website internally and offers some shortcuts etc to the facebook interface.
So yes. It doesn't access your microphone and takes your privacy seriously.
Much much safer. Tinfoil is the same as going to the Facebook mobile website but on a virtual machine. It creates a sandbox specifically for opening the mobile site.
So even if the mobile site tries to read your contacts or text or email it can't because it doesn't have access to anything. It's running on essentially a virtual machine.
The project is open source and all the code is up on https://github.com/velazcod/Tinfoil-Facebook for people to check out to verify nothing fishy is going on. This isn't going to stop Facebook from using the data you put on it however they want, but it stops them from using your phone as a means to collect additional data.
The app is open source: https://github.com/velazcod/Tinfoil-Facebook
I wrote it for myself and then decided to put it out there for everyone else, it's free, and open source. Yes, it's only a wrapper for https://m.facebook.com and I really can't take much credit about the functionality, or even "bugs". But, some people like it, so, why not?
There's no potential of being tracked by "us", again, the app is completely open source, if you are skeptic, go look at the source code, and you can even compile it yourself in case you don't trust the version that's on the market.
Exactly the same, with the added convenience of a native menu added to help you navigate around faster.
It also has separate storage from your browser, so FB tracking on other sites won't know about your profile /session.
Oh, and it has very few permissions, fewer than your browser, so double sandbox all the way. Overall pretty neat-o, part of this complete breakfast.
seems legit! what about android apps like tinfoil-facebook, who claims to "create a sandbox for facebook's mobile site." ?

instead of browsing through a separate browser, like you suggested edit: typo
There is also mbasic.facebook.com, Tinfoil for facebook can be set to load that. Not sure if you can send messages or not.
Perhaps someone could make an extension that always sends you to the basic site, it might be useful for the people that absolutely need facebook.
E: there is another app called SlimSocial for Facebook, seems slightly newer.
That site is even older... Might still be credible but I'm not gonna dig deep into it.
I don't have Facebook on my smartphone too/anymore. :D
Anyway, if you're on Android, you might like to have a look at this: Tinfoil for Facebook
