I suspected this was the case, I'd come to the same conclusions as you but thought I'd see if there was a product out there that I was missing. There was always going to be something we would have to drop, and i think ive found a workable balance.
The machines that require unattended access (100 or so) will be gone from the network in the next 3-6months, for the moment we will stick with TeamViewer on them to keep things simple.
The remaining machines i think we will push to Wayk Now. They have a PoSH module which will allow us to manage the application (update, start/stop the service) as well as setting a global configuration file. The application installs as an on-demand service. Users start the application pass the ID and passcode and then the tech is logged in, because the application is installed into the system UAC isn't an issue. The best bit is its free for commercial use and is from Devolutions so has a solid company behind it. They support Mac's, PC's and have mobile apps which is also a bonus.
+1 for Quick Assist for Windows users. Also, I've been using Wayk Now from Devolutions in place of Teamviewer. They allow commercial use on the free version. I have not tried the Linux version. https://wayk.devolutions.net/wayk-now/compare
I was looking at remote solution recently and ive found one solid product which is free for commercial use and works well. WaykNow by Devolutions (they make Remote Desktop Manager).

They have a powershell module which you can install and then apply configuration options out to clients if you need to (such as updating the client) or turning a client to "Server" only mode.
I found that the people that make RDMan also have a free for commercial use remote support tool https://wayk.devolutions.net/ combine that with their PoSH module and either Chocolatey or PatchMyPC (silent run) and you can get most of the features back.
When looking at this i saw that they have another cool free (with paid options) tool. Wayk Now its a remote support client like TeamViewer Quick Support. It has a useful PoSH module for management as well.
I use this if SCCM remote control or VPN isn't working: https://wayk.devolutions.net/wayk-now
If they are on VPN, the drop down menu in the wayk client will show an IP address which is super handy since I can just plug that into SCCM RC and connect to them that way.
Since this is becoming a recommendation thread, I'll thrown in Wayk Now from Devolutions. It does integrate with Remote Desktop Manager but has a nebulous use case for Enterprise. If you're supporting family/friends remotely, it's a great support tool. For enterprise, it does offer some nifty features with the enterprise license- such as remote execution- but it's not a magic bullet.
The free version is 100% free- commercial, non-commercial, quasi-non-binary-commercial; whatever. If you need to do a quick support session outside of a structured environment, it's quick, easy, and no worries about license. Even has a run-once, no install option.
Hey you're totally right! Plus, if you don't want to use Teamviewer. Devolutions offers a free alternative called Wayk Now. Trust me, you should try it. wayk.devolutions.net
