Screen addiction is seriously killer. I'm on reddit right now, even though I would rather do something else. I've been on for at least 40 minutes.
I could be reading my book, practicing piano, applying for jobs, or just working on some other skill. Its just that dopamine rush and complacency that comes with scrolling thats me continue mindlessly.
Webtime Tracker is another good chrome extension to help with this. Its difficult to use website blockers if you have the ability to turn them off. This just tracks your time on each website. Helps me shame myself when I know that I spend on average 30 minutes a day on reddit. That means in the 46 days sense I got the extension, I have spent nearly an entire day on reddit. What a waste of time!!
I installed this browser extension to track my internet usage and the results are eye-opening. I spend an average of 4 hours per day on Reddit, YouTube, and Facebook. Meanwhile, even though I feel like I spend most of my time on my computer working, I can only find about 1.5 hours on school-related websites. I don't do everything in the browser, but even if I double that it's still 25% less than what I spend on the top three time-wasting sites. I guess I need to work on my discipline.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with time-tracking?
> I’m trying to make my time more productive but whenever I realize I’m on the internet doing nothing, I can’t seem to find anything else better to do
I think this is the key, you'll always waste your time on the internet as long as you don't find something better to do. Some of the things you can do instead are practice meditation, read books, write a journal, practice yoga, learn guitar, go for a walk while listening to a podcast, etc.
It seems like you'd benefit from reading The Pomodoro Technique and Getting Things Done, both have been instrumental in getting my shit together in terms of organization and productivity. If you're a writer, you'd benefit from reading How to Write a Lot by Paul Silvia.
Also, some practical tips: use browser extensions! I use BlockSite to block timesinks during my productive hours, StayFocusd to limit my time on facebook to max 20 minutes daily and Webtime Tracker to track how I spend my time online. If you work online, you can use one browser for work and one for leisure. Block all the time wasting sites on your work browser. Good luck!
I was (maybe still am?) in the same boat - constantly checking Reddit whenever I'm bored. Here's what I did:
I used to average almost an hour a day, now I'm down closer to 15 minutes (I use this webtime tracker). I'll still check it neurotically when I've got free time (sort of an engrained habit) but I've definitely noticed the dopamine spike getting smaller over time.
Yes, at the most basic you can look at the chrome://newtab page, the shortcuts it auto adds there are based on usage.
Anything fancier than that you'd need an extension.
If this is for future reference you can use something like Webtime Tracker or TimeYourWeb Time Tracker which are able to give your top used sites as well as how much time you've spent on them but they are only able to give info from after they are installed.
Keep in mind it's not exact because they make assumptions on what to count like how much inactivity is considered idle and such but i's still going to be very close.
If you want to see something now you can use something like History Trends Unlimited which will import your existing history and is able to show you your top most visited domains and such. It's not able to tell how long was spent on the sites tho only that they were visited.
Apologies in advance.
Aside from the ability to only monitor specific sites this seems just like Webtime Tracker but manual instead of automatic.
The ability to clear individual sites allows it to be used like a trip odometer tho whereas the other is an all or nothing deal.
What someone really needs to make is a search engine for chrome's web store that lets you limit your search to only things that have received updates in the last 12 months as chrome changes pretty quickly and for a lot of stuff that means if it ain't been updated in a year something is broken in it and it's no longer maintained.
Otherwise I am currently looking for an extension that will distinguish a link in some way (color, highlight, something) if it is in my bookmarks.
Webtime Tracker! Really helped me to visualize how much time I waste every day on different sites..

I use this one. Not bad, could have better UI.
It was a ad on which recods and displays how much time a person is spending on one site and the total and average amount of time spent online
It's called rescue time also the symbol for this extension doesn't appear even in normal mode in the tool bar where has uBlock and Ghostery's symbol does appear there
Now I;m back on Chrome cause of that
FireFox doesn't seem to have many extensions like that for recording the time spent online, maybe I'm typing in the wron key words but I just couldn't find any I really liked
This is the one I use on Chrome

It displays everything I want to see in a neat layout couldn't find such extension on fox
Do you know any such extension for fox
So it seems it was caused by Web Timer (removed by Google yesterday: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/web-timer/ggnjbdfgigejghknieofeahaknkjafim).
If you are looking for an alternative time tracker, I've developed a solid and safe alternative - Webtime Tracker: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/webtime-tracker/ppaojnbmmaigjmlpjaldnkgnklhicppk
