Get a good VPN that's not based in the states.
if you know how to buy bitcoins and pay in them. Cryptostorm, Earthvpn, hideme, or nordvpn
Edit: people hate nordvpn but like PIA
Edit 2: doesn't need to be out of the states as long as it doesn't log.
Edit 3: from u/halohudini > For anyone considering a VPN that is based in the states, I ask you to take a look at what happened to Lavabit. Any VPN based in the US can be compelled to turn over their encryption keys allowing authorities to view all traffic passed through its servers.
Here you go! Read the email guide too. Basically, these are ideal: * AirVPN * BlackVPN * BolehVPN * Doublehop * IVPN * Mullvad * NordVPN (huge discounts from Youtube) * * ~~Private Internet Access~~ * * * * TunnelBear * WindScribe
This is hilarious. And from a consumer standpoint, scary:
>Getting a refund: As it says in Doublehop’s terms of service, they do not give refunds – and, I suppose I can say, based on not receiving any response from the company, they are true to their word.
It should be noted /u/ThatOnePrivacyGuy wanted a refund since, after two days of trying to actually have the VPN service work, with no responses from Doublehop, he tried to get a refund for non-service and what I perceive as false claims.
Depending on your location and your ISPs peering/routing PIA would be fine. They max out my 200mbit connection via torrents and Usenet and have for over 3 years with out a single copyright letter or notice.
Doublehop would be over kill for just torrenting as like the name suggests they route your traffic to two different servers before being sent your destination.
Some that DoktorSchlong suggest are good as well, but be warned that lots of people have speed issues with NordVPN from overselling (including myself, they couldn't even give me 50mbit of my 200mbit connection) so ask them for a free trial before signing up with them if you plan on going with them. uses Virtual servers on some of their locations and this is a no, no for a provider that cares about privacy and i never looked into even though i have heard of them so can't tell you about them.
Im looking into Doublehop VPN for being invisible to a any potential state agency alegedly looking into my browsing history? Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it any good? On the side I want a VPN that can just allo me high speed legally torrenting and YouTube videos (Fuck article 13) in the EU, are any of the popular stuff any good as far as speed and reliability goes?
As long as your VPN is solid, no-log, offshore, such as Mullvad, a vpn, I think you get added security.
A VPN provides:
An additional hop.
Hiding Tor usage from packet inspection.

remember, even if the Tor node or VPN server doesnt keep logs, the DataCenter/Hosting company always keeps logs. its rare to find a company which doesnt log.

my favorite setup is:

Doublehop offshore VPN router > Tor Router > Laptop > Doublehop offshore vpn > OBFS4 Tor Browser.
so there's a moron here downvoting posts, probably the OP, as they put into question his findings; or point out the obvious about setting up camp in tax havens far from regulations. if i were to start a business where all i needed were servers scattered around the world i'd probably do the same.

so that one privacy site studies 185 total vpns. out of which 13 are incorportad in the seychelles; which is 7% of the lot. hardly "a lot".

all them 13 incorportated in the seychelles at the aformentionned site are problably only known to their owners and a handful of other people; aside from Astrill which is somewhat more reputable. useless, questionable vpns. "Doublehop", FrootVPN".
I'm looking for the most secure, most private VPN. I need to assuage my paranoia. I plan on torrenting and doing my usual internetting behind the VPN, only turning it off to play games with friends. I'm leaning toward unless someone has some serious issues with it.
> Whatever these companies say, I would not trust that there is no log somewhere.
I think the location of a server - or the location of the company operating it - is less important than the reputation of the company.
>Whatever these companies say, I would not trust that there is no log somewhere.
I don't have much confidence in any of the VPN companies. Let's face it, they make money primarily by enabling people to get away with doing shady or illegal stuff (very nasty illegal stuff too, sometimes - like accessing kiddie porn). It's not exactly a business model that inspires confidence. That said, I have somewhat more confidence in the established players than in companies I've never heard and, consequently, would rather use a service such as PIA or TorGuard than BolehVPN or .
