No, realize that all of your traffic goes through the VPN, and the connection is only as secure as the host. I would not use a google or amazon vpn because they would be monitoring that connection for every bit of data they could get.
Paying for a VPN that guarantees the connection is private is the best route. and express vpn both have total private contracts.
It’s worth it if you want what it provides, and don’t want to manage stuff yourself.
Ad blocking replaces a Pi Hole. 1Password and now cost less overall. Plus will naturally have more partnerships later.
Most importantly, it’s a great way to support a great small team. These subscriptions are where the majority of their profit as a company will come from. Hardware is expensive. Distribution is expensive. Advertising is expensive. Eero Plus is how Eero stays alive.
If you like Eero, pay for Eero Plus as a donation, and consider the features as nice-to-haves.
is my email as opposed to google or yahoo.
is included with my Eero plus subscription for $99/year.
It’s not so hard as you think. Duck duck Go and shopping from distributor shops and online stores is rather easy.
Finally, I’m only using apple products.
I already use Google DNS. As for the adblocker, I use this but not on mobile devices. My router has an adblock feature that I use but these ads are getting around that somehow (I contacted the router manufacture for help with this).
And yea I have for VPN access which is normally pretty fast. Someone else in my family uses a text-to-speech device that you can't install a VPN client on. And my router doesn't support full home VPN access (and I really don't want to do that).
EDIT: I actually use the DNS of my router manufacture. Normally I would be against this but the company is pretty reputable (Eero) and it is used for home networking filtering.
Depends on what you use VPN for. I use VPN to keep myself protected on public WiFi, for this works fine and the logs don’t bother me as that is not what I’m trying avoid. However, if you are using a VPN for anonymity then isn’t for you.
Also, adding a VPN will reduce speed, and can possibly cripple your streaming services. I’ve had Hulu (and others) refuse to start when using (part of eero+) because it can’t verify my country.
My $.02, don’t knee jerk, it’s unlikely changes will be seen immediately.
I think at $100 Eero Plus (Secure +) is still a solid deal. But I have been using Dashlane, NordVPN as alternatives to 1Password and for a bit. Need to find an alternate to Malwarebytes and will just switch to Eero secure when my current subscription of Eero Plus finishes in December.
Apple is great, but third party products can create experiences that enhance the apple ecosystem as well.
I have 3 eero in my home and subscribe to eero plus. This means i get 700mbps over the air all over my home with built in security and ad block from eero plus.
Bonus: eero plus comes with 1Password, malwarebytes, and family plans for free. Woot. I doubt apple could top that, honestly.
I misstated that. They aren’t watching everything I’m doing per say but they are logging it.
PIA - PIA absolutely does not keep any logs, of any kind, period. We can unequivocally state that our company has not and still does not maintain metadata logs regarding when a subscriber accesses the VPN service, how long a subscriber's use was, and what IP address a subscriber originated from. Moreover, the encryption system does not allow us to view and thus log what IP addresses a subscriber is visiting or has visited.
I just feel better about using a VPN with no logs.
is fine, especially being bundled with eero plus. Never had any issues with it; I use it on both iOS and macOS. Auto-connect and transporter are nice features. Performance is good. It works great for personal use, I have no desire to seek a replacement.
I got it alone for the 1Password and , the other items were just a bonus. I already subscribed to 1Password for $5 a month, so adding another $4 was a no brainier. So far it's been really great.
I whole heartedly agree with the subscription and I’ll say this about it - I was using Express VPN. Since I’m not a pirate and don’t care about torrenting, the included works perfect. I don’t care about Malwarebytes and I don’t care to change the password manager I’ve already been using for many years to One password. So the tossup with spending money to subscribe to eero+ just to get, the should be standard features of, making profiles to pause certain things came down to solely saving money on a VPN. If they decided to unpartner with . I will re-evaluate this whole experience.
My quick take...
Every home needs digital security if you have a bunch of connected devices — I like buying new gadgets so I have a bunch and our network-based security is really helpful.
I travel a lot and also use my laptop at coffee shops, so having VPN via is really helpful.
Even Macs get sick sometimes, so having Antivirus is important.
Lastly, everyone should have a password manager and 1Password is great. It works across platforms and I’ve had an account since the early days.
All of this is worth well more than $100 a year to me (and on the open market). Hence eero Plus. Any feedback on the feature set we’d love to hear. There’s a long road ahead and we’re working hard to make it better and better.
I agree that eero Plus could definitely benefit from some improvement. I think if they did incremental improvements to the service similar to the app or firmware. I hope they aren't storing up all the eero Plus changes for some big bang release.
I originally had my eero in bridged mode with a EdgeRouter X but I found that I really missed a lot of the manageability features from the eero app.
I'm sure eero Plus will improve, they've mentioned multiple times that there are improvements coming. They did add the 3 services you get for free in December (1Password, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, and ). While these didn't actually improve the eero Plus service, it added a lot of value to owning the service and if you take advantage of these now included 3rd party applications you'll most likely increase your security posture.
I couldn’t find a reason to keep it. I cancelled. Maybe if you like the combo?
I LOVE that firewalla is not charging me a subscription.
If FW ever releases new hardware I will seriously consider it.
I’m a subscriber just for 1Password, MalwareBytes, and . With that being said, I spent $30 on a Pi Zero kit and installed Pi-Hole. I just set it as a custom DNS server on all my WiFi clients manually. I really like the reporting and configuration possibilities in the Pi-Hole and it continues to be improved.
Agreed. Until Eero and/or Amazon specifies their plan, we need to raise concerns.
Amazon's ad business is one of their rising stars, and it stands to benefit the more they know about you.
I am hoping data harvesting would come in the form of "opt in". Could be cheaper Eero similar to Kindle Special Offers or discounted/free Eero Plus subscription.
Speaking of Eero Plus, I worry about its fate. Malwarebytes and 1Password might be safe (although they probably will be subject to renegotiation), but I am not sure VPN ( would be in the best interest to Amazon. It might also be rolled into umbrella home subscription that includes Ring and few others.
Having said that, I strongly doubt existing Eero units will be affected (in terms of data harvesting and/or advertisement).
We have a VPN partner () through eero Plus for securing your connection when you're on the go.
In terms of getting back to your home, we're exploring some options. Basically, 99% of our customers have very limited upload speeds and if you VPN'd back to your home, you're going to have a lousy experience.
What I did personally is I have an RPi that I can establish an SSH connection to in case I need it.
I was testing out , which will automatically bring up a VPN on non-trusted networks. You can easily whitelist networks that it should leave alone. It doesn't have the configurability that some VPNs have, such as specifying which country you want to route through, etc., but that might not be an issue for you.
We had somebody recently have this issue and their devices ended up being connected to their cable modem that still had it's wifi on. Any chance that's the issue here?
The constant network security is great for keeping other connected devices safe. You also get 1Password, Malwarebytes, and VPN
I think it's a great deal. I had already been using a 1Password family account, and had been considering a VPN service. is great — really easy to use and, on iOS at least, can automatically connect when you connect to a new wi-fi network. I don't use the VPN service at home, though I can understand that being frustrating for somebody looking for a router-based solution.
I'm sure it's been submitted as a feature request, but there is a link in the sidebar to make the request yourself.
One thing I should note is that you'll need to contact 1Password support to switch your existing account over to the eero plus billing. It's really painless, but if you are on an existing plan with a bunch of time prepaid, you might consider waiting until it's just about to expire so as not to lose any of it.
All of that said, if you're really looking for privacy and anonymity, then this isn't the service you should be looking for to provide that.
The terms of service should certainly be sufficient to protect you from behavior-based profiling, but if you really want to keep what you're doing from anyone's eyes, then you want to be looking into solid VPN service providers and/or solutions like the Tor project.
eero Plus is providing a service, but not that service. :)
EDIT: Also, doesn't provide that service either. They provide some basic (and pretty good) protections when connecting to open / potentially un-encrypted WiFi networks, but they do not claim to provide complete privacy and anonymity like you can find with other solutions.
eeroPlus has a few nice options
I don't see any way to make configuration changes like that in the iOS app, but I can't speak to the other clients. With that said, I don't think is really the best option for avoiding Imperial entanglements...
Totally agree too and having same issues with . Even 1Password isn't much good for me as I'm the only one who uses it and the free version works fine for me. I managed to get Secure+ half price so I'm not too disappointed, but I'm unlikely to renew.
Also, VPNs don't work properly on iOS allegedly:
I noticed the location options in the iOS app kind of work. Choosing UK London allowed me to trip BBC Iplayer but it doesn’t seem to do anything for the Netflix app, on the surface it offers some reassurance since for me as far Private Rely is a bit pick and choose when it’s going to be activated.
It can improve your protection. However, it would be helpful if you understood the basics of how that would happen.
What the Eero VPN does is allow you to install on your phone and laptop that you take with you, and if it's configured properly it will transfer risk of some information theft from random hotel and public WiFi operators to a single VPN provider (who I'm not implying is untrustworthy). That's all.
It may help you a little, but gaining some understanding of the more common ways financial data is stolen would probably help you more. Examples: good passwords, avoiding phishing attacks, updating your browser and safe browsing habits, etc.
No, it just gives you a free subscription to the service. You have to use an app on your phone/computer to actually use the vpn. supports windows android macOS and iOS.
It doesn’t enable anything on eero.
A little clarification here! VPN is a partner service offered as part of your eero Plus subscription, but their VPN software does not live anywhere in the eero infrastructure. Their VPN is included as an additional security option for your devices when you're on unsecured WiFi networks (e.g. at the airport, hotel, coffee shop, etc.), and requires the use of their app. At this time, eero does not offer a native, network-level VPN integration, but we have other router-level security features to keep your family safe, including content filtering, ad-blocking and malware blocking.

So when turning the VPN on (meaning actually activating it) via my Pixel phone, it can't talk to my Shield TV, even though the Shield TV is connected via Ethernet? So in order to use the VPN on my Shield TV, I would need to turn on the "VPN tunnel" via the Shield TV? Sorry, this is all new to me. I thought turned on a VPN for all connected devices on the network. I'm still trying to figure it out.
I use . Amazing UI on mac, and easy to send traffic to a particular country (e.g., USA).
Also, Cloudflare's new 1.1.1.1 apps for mobile look amazing. They encrypt DNS traffic on cell phones, which addresses a big security + surveillance issue. I think this is a good middle-ground between full VPN on phone and no security. https://1.1.1.1/
There have been a few other threads about this but the short recap is that is fine for providing basic privacy protection when you're connecting to untrusted / public / open Wi-Fi, but it's not the right solution if you're looking for robust privacy and anonymity.
The fact that it turns itself on automatically when you connect to an untrusted network is really nice. You don't have to think about it, it just happens.
If you want more robust privacy and anonymity (or better performance, especially at high bandwidths), then some of the other suggestions folks have already made are better options. I personally use .

In conjunction with , I have a subscription to ProtonVPN. I definitely like how on , I can have an unlimited number of devices, and it works decently well. I always have it connected on my devices, since I’m 90% of the time on public WiFi. I use ProtonVPN when I’m having problems with (sometimes it’s just way too slow), or, when I need to use a no-logs and better privacy-focused VPN. Sadly. Proton limits you to like 5 devices at a time. So takes the bulk of my VPN use. I would highly recommend ProtonVPN if you’re looking for speed and better privacy focus (ie. no-logs policy, country hopping, etc), but if you’re just fine with basic VPN service, and works well, stick with that.
Sounds like a peering issue with your ISP.
Turning on the VPN eero offers basically transports that device from your houses' network (including internal), and acts as if its sitting in a datacenter where operates. So if that data center doesn't have a peering issue, you get it faster.
The only caveat to a VPN, is if your ISP has a peering issue to the datacenter is 'moving' your traffic to. Then, all traffic, not just some websites, will be slower.
Adding to this, eero is tri band while beacons are dual band. The pro package comes with 3 eeros and is what I recommend for 3000 sq ft. Beacons are easier to place (no wires to hide), if that matters to you.
The content filtering, in addition to pausing, allows you to filter out adult, illegal and criminal, or violent content. You can apply these filters to a group of devices you choose under family profiles.
I agree, eero plus is a great value for network wide protection, alone. It also comes with 1Password password manager, malwarebytes anti malware, and vpn services.
If you’re willing to switch VPNs, already does this. You add your trusted networks in the app as you connect to them and it will always then the VPN on when you’re connected to a network it doesn’t recognize
Here’s what they say they collect:
>The number of bytes sent and received
>The length of time connected
>The IP address connected from and the (virtual) IP we assign
>The source port of the outgoing connection with start and end times
So they’re not logging the URLs or domains you visit, only your IP, how long you were connected and when, the number of bytes sent and received, and the source port of the outgoing connection.
This would be useful if, for example, a server owner reported abuse from an IP address within the last 16 days. They could figure out which user did it and ban them.
But they do not keep a record of the sites you visit, which is what most are concerned with when taking about logging.
eero is a mesh wireless router system. You’ll still need Internet from an ISP and a modem.
eero provides a great home network experience by allowing you to add additional eero to the network to continue to increase the distance that your house gets wifi.
They do a fantastic job in the hardware, software, security, documentation, customer support etc.
I recommend this company to everyone.
eero Plus is a yearly subscription service they offer which also does things like blacklist / protect you from malicious websites, block-ads at a DNS level so they don’t load on your devices and give you access to 1Password password manager, MalwareBytes Antimalware software, and VPN service.
It’s really about security more than anything. If you want total privacy you need to pay for a service that doesn’t log and is based outside of the five eyes. mainly provides the protection on public WiFi.
I never used much in the way of deep router settings - I had Apple Airports before switching to eero (the Airports couldn’t get decent coverage once we moved from a condo to a house) so I can’t really weigh in on the security settings aspect of things. But....
I had 1Password on my iDevices and Mac, but merged it to the shared vault plan once I upgraded to eero plus because why not. No issues there; I always liked 1Password a lot before anyway and now password sharing with the wife is easier.
is where it really shines for me; there’s no secure WiFi at work, as everything is hardwired for security. I end up using public WiFi the entire workday and ’s auto-on is seamless. I had NordVPN before, but would often forget to turn it on and off, so the makes one less thing to remember.
Can’t weigh in on the malwarebytes; haven’t experimented with it yet.
tl;dr: haven’t found any issues and think eero plus is worthwhile
explicitly states that they log everything and keep it for up to 16 days. From their website:
> When you use to secure your connection, we collect:
> * The number of bytes sent and received > * The amount of time been connected > * The IP address connected from and the (virtual) IP we assign > * The source port of the outgoing connection with start and end times
> We keep this information for at most sixteen (16) days, after which we permanently delete it.
While it's good that they are open about their logging policies, they do keep some logs, so that's worth keeping in mind.
eero Plus protects your DNS requests from your ISP's prying eyes, by which I mean deep packet inspection. It does not protect the content of those sites from your ISP, but if you use HTTPS Everywhere or a similar browser extension, then that will help with that.
It does not provide (and is not intended to provide) anonymity or privacy against governments or, of course, the sites themselves.
provides a higher level of security against inspection on the wire, but similarly does not and is not intended to provide anonymity or protect against government examination.
It's not just - I would expect the big G to see the IP address as suspicious.
I get EeroSecure for free from Frontier. If I had to pay for it, I wouldn't use it. But that's just me...
IMO, 1Password and DDNS makes it worth it. is meh especially with iCloud Private Relay ( doesnt allow you to change locations so you can watch Netflix in other countries for example), and antivirus is a scam (just use built-in WIndows Defender if on Windows, and you don’t need it on Mac or Linux). With DDNS especially, now I can access my HOOBS box remotely.
FWIW, Nord wouldn’t connect to a server for me, but works fine. So must be an issue with the Nord app and not all VPN apps.
EDIT: Nord works if you change the connection type to IKEv2 in the app’s settings. Crisis averted
Hello u/wase471111,
The security from and Malwarebytes is installed on the device level not the router level. So, when comparing those services on a router level to other security on a router level as well doesn't work out correctly. That being said, if you have any questions regarding the security of the eero system I have provided a link to our FAQ below that should answer most of your questions.
Thank you, eero Support
1PW for sure since already heavily using that. is not great but it works. I wish they would evaluate that partnership. MalwareBytes, sure it’s nice enough. So if I needed to do 1PW Family and a VPN separately then it would cost me more. Ideally I would prefer 1PW, Mullvard VPN, and PiHole. But cost more and up the management.
All I can tell you is that we got the Eero system a couple years ago and have loved it. We've expanded it once as our needs grew (having a Roku on the deck) and it was as easy as plugging a beacon into an outlet. There's a great app to control what is on your network and you can set up profiles to control the time devices can access wifi. There's also a Secure+ subscription (I think it's $99 for the year) that blocks ads and threats and comes with family plans for 1Password, , and Malwarebytes. I know I sound like a sales person but I swear I'm not! :)
With all of that, the answer was right in front of me. Somehow had changes to an older account Of mine that had expired. Back to normal now with the newer account.
Sometimes the simple solution is right in front of our eyes. Thanks everybody for your help tho.
I use both. I like the automatic protection on unknown networks feature of , which has been available for quite some time now. PIA just introduced this feature, too, but I find it quite buggy. It often doesn’t turn off properly and chooses weird servers to connect to. I’ve lost internet connectivity only to discover that PIA’s protection feature has left me connected to the VPN, which has stopped working for some reason. never does this. PIA works fine when toggled manually, however.
I like the benefit of automatically protecting me on public WiFi, but when I’m looking for anonymity I use PIA.
Kindle Unlimited is worth it in my opinion at $10. The others are definitely debatable. My wife swears by Audible but in that atleast you get to keep the book(s) after your subscription runs out.
I do agree with you generally speaking. To me the only Eero Plus feature I truly use is 1Password. I use NordVPN for my VPN so do not care about and installed MalwareBytes for no other reason than I got it as part of Eero Plus.
What I can see happening is actually Eero Plus adding more functionality and features with the Amazon buyout but keep the cost about the same. Sure, bundling it would help them sell more Eero's but in a world where everyone is going subscription based I think Amazon would actually prefer to keep that as a more steady source of revenue.
Definitely no other WiFi here. I replaced my Ubiquiti gear with Eero and have a “plain” cable modem that does a single function.
I definitely see the value for many in the other services, but MB and 1PW have no value to me (reasons noted above). The labs features and seem to be the biggest value add to me at this point.
Netflix- $15
Hulu- $12
VRV- $10
Nomorobo- $1.66
Bear- $1.25
Carrot weather- $0.83
Twitterrific- $0.50
Overcast- $0.83
Apple Music- $8
Eero plus- $8 which includes 1password and VPN for free.
Total per month= $58
Total per month for just apps- $13
I'm as up to date as can be, but I'm also just a dumbass. I use , and, well, my Eero wasn't a trusted network, so I was on VPN without knowing or thinking about it...
I'm now getting between 65-90 mbps, which, while considerably less than my Pixel 2 XL, is about what I was getting before and is lot better than 20 mbps, so I blame the the computer (and it's also now having me on 2.4 at the moment, so I think that's pretty good for that, personally). :)
A non issue. No one should ever use public wifi without a VPN. We have 3ea subscriptions (plenty of available seats) but prefer the mini plane from because it's less obtrusive. When we're home - VPN automatically fades away. Anywhere else - we're protected.
Probably 95% of our phone traffic goes through wifi because cellular coverage within buildings is so poor.
Yea we're not really sure what's up with the VPNs. Many (like NordVPN and AirVPN, we've seen before here) seem to be messing with the 1Password app's secure connection to our servers.
A few quick questions if you're up for some troubleshooting:
How's your internet speed (a number in Mbps would be perfect) with Proton VPN going?
How are you connected to your router—ethernet or via WiFi?
Are you able to connect to and use your account just fine online with Proton VPN running?
I did test NordVPN on my Windows 10 PC and couldn't break 1Password for Windows and its connection. Also, I use on all my devices on a daily basis, so if you're in the mood for a switch of VPN providers you can switch to them and all your connection problems (should) go away magically.
Thanks for your reply. Here are the answers:
Based on , VPN speed is maxing out my connection download speed (150 Mbps) and upload is 12 Mbps.
Ethernet.
Yes I can. Also, 1PasswordX works fine too.
While I have not tried service, I do know that they keep logs and emphasize that their primary focus is security rather than privacy.
True. I'm not saying they're bad for doing it -- just pointing out what their particular logging level is. Depending on your VPN needs/desires, that level of logging may or may not be acceptable to you. You can get enough data to maintain your service with minimal, anonymized logging. There's really no reason to log the end-user's IP address or account name unless you want to use it for billing/tracking/support purposes. Since bills based on bandwidth, it sounds like they may just use that for billing purposes.
Do you have access to wifi?
Consider installing Sudo (webrtc), and a VPN (mini plan from is cheap and competent).
Think that VPN runs $3US/mo ....
Your regular 911 PSTN phone system would still work.
Check out US Mobile (they may serve Canada too).
I’m a HUGE fan of the ad blocking. Even redid some wiring to get my Ethernet network under the eero umbrella to make sure all devices are covered. They were previously separate due to some things being in poor locations.
My 1Password Families subscription is now free because of it, and I stopped paying for my VPN and began using the free service instead - it’s really great, especially the feature to only turn on the VPN when connected to networks you haven’t marked as trusted.
The only con I’ve found is that it is $99 a year. 1Password cost me $50 a year, and my VPN was $40 a year and I’d totally pay $9 a year for ad blocking so I consider it an easy wash. The malware blocking is an added bonus, too!
Yes, disabling the beta ad blocking feature of eero Plus works, but it doesn't kick in immediately... You have to leave it off for a while (I haven't bothered figuring out how long, exactly), but then the CNN app connects just fine.
Also, (or any other off-network VPN) works because it basically puts your device on another network, and outside the scope of the eero network.
Similarly, connecting to the eero Guest network works, because the eero Plus filtering doesn't apply to that network.
We're using Wifi a lot these days via (formerly cloak). It's apparently just an automatic shell for the iphone's built in VPN. Believe you can buy passes for their system through itunes , but I'd recommend their $3/month plan directly billed instead. YMMV.
We only use VPNs for protection from open wifi (keeping stuff out) really for hiding traffic - since our phones only support Signal. Never email or browsing.
Other VPN suppliers might support more advanced features, but this one works reliably and automatically. "Automatic" is their focus. We have OpenVPN on one phone with a reliable supplier - but never use it.
Go this route and your cellphone data use drops to near nothing. Believe last month my personal phone consumed 25MB :) Allows me to fund that phone with $4/month (Not counting that $3/mo VPN spread over 4ea phones).
Eero just announced a great partnership with 1Password, , and malwarebytes. It’s $99 a year for all that plus eero plus, which is a security watchdog and ad block for your home WiFi.
I signed up immediately. The part were hip will go into effect in December.
Anyone else interested?
Has anyone else ever seen partnerships like this before between hardware and software subscriptions?
I’m using iOS, personally, so not Android in my case.
I do think it might be switching back and forth from OpenVPN and connections though.
Last night I tried disconnecting WiFi (via the Control Center) before enabling OpenVPN. As soon as I disconnected from OpenVPN and re-enabled WiFi, lost its mind.
Guess I'll see what support has to say!
This is happening to me too on mobile Safari with NordVPN. As soon as I disconnect I can reach again. Been happening for a while now.
It’s definitely Nord that is the issue though as I also have and it works fine. I prefer to use Nord though as it’s faster.
I do pay for a password manager and consider it to be worthwhile since it lets my entire family share some credentials and access them from our various devices, etc. I don't use the one eero chose though.
I wouldn't use for a VPN service. Don't want, won't use. There are far better choices out there.
Malwarebytes is also something I would never use. It tends to be pretty crappy, and the company is really crappy.
The old Secure service was something that was at least tempting. It seemed like it was worth the price and I would have signed up for it if I wanted something simpler than what I already have. I did mention Secure when I was recommending eero to people who wanted an easy-to-use solution.
I can't see spending even more money on their new Plus service. It's also the same price as the Plume subscription fee and I decided against that several years ago.
It seems is now part of StrongVPN, at least it will be soon enough. StrongVPN was also a crappy VPN service but it seems to have beefed up its offering with zero logging and p2p support.
That's what it seems to be.
For me to justify spending $70 over $30 eero Secure, it would at least need to switch to a better VPN service.
is consistently rated as a poor VPN service, criticized for poor privacy policy, weak security, and doesn't work with most streaming services.
VPN is one of the free apps offered with an Eero Secure+ subscription. Supposed to be used in public wifi networks. I may have used it in the past a few times.
Why was it trying to connect and disconnect is a good question? We haven't had anything suspicious happen on our home network that we have seen.
I had a bunch of issues staying connected with
Anyway, this was supposed to be on a trial basis to see if it solved my issue, but I've been there for a full year now and nobody's changed anything or reached out to me about it.
Might be worth inquiring about.
I got for free w eero and honestly it’s super easy. It hasn’t failed, hasn’t given me problems. Never slowed down. I have not tried Nord but went through a good dozen alternatives… i’d pay for ProtonVPN if I had to but has been pretty cool.
For the past week I've been having a myriad of problems with . So many that I can't even understand what's going on. What a complete hassle. One more thing I really wish I didn't have to figure out, but ultimately will have to.
I downgraded from Secure+ to Secure a while back. MacOS 12 and iOS do all the password stuff I need (basic needs not Cadillac), and I think is garbage (I’m more of a IVPN fan) and I won’t install Malwarebytes.
They’re StrongVPN now, which at first blush appears to be feature similar to . I personally loved that automatically turned on VPN by network automatically, though I am sure others do this now too? Suspect a similar deal will be made?
I got yearly and already had 1Password, so it pretty much paid for itself already, plus it comes with VPN. Look for a 50% off code too. I used one in Dec that was Dec50.
Yeah I get that message from time to time. But toggling WiFi seems to fix it. Like I said, it is a beta feature for Apple so I’m not overly fussed right now but I do want Eero to support it properly. I’m also imagining that Eero may launch something similar as a value add with Eero Secure or Secure+. Today Secure+ gives you VPN which theoretically gives you some similar benefits, but having reviewed their privacy policy I know mostly it’s just moving the whole can see my online activity to another party.
I have privacy turned off on my network for all iOS devices because I’m OVD and I want to know what device is connected. That way if there are issues, it might be easier to bird dog.
I also have eero Secure turned off because there were a lot of issues with past firmware updates. I do not have WPA3 turned on. Because of problems with iOS devices. I would suggest turning secure and WPA3 off. If that corrects your issue turn on Secure but slowly add an item at a time. You might find it’s a specific secure feature causing the problem. Also, if you are using Encrypt Me, Log out and your last feature to turn on should be that. I am along user and found that on some networks it needs to be turned off.
No private relay, but just discovered that vpn was on. Seems that was allowing the phone to circumvent the filter. Is there no option to prevent or disallow vpns in eero so that the filter can’t be circumvented?
I concur. I use only the 1Password third-party benefit. cannot be trusted at all; just read their legal sections. For a paid VPN I recommend only Private Internet Access. cannot compare. MalMalwareByffes is useful only on Windows; no Mac OS user need use any programme of that ilk. If they truly believe otherwise they she revert to Windows. The dynamic DNS functionality is perfect for we whom use NextDNS.
UI is really weird and I didn’t like it but it does work. I wouldn’t buy it but if you’re on Setapp and don’t have another option it’s totally worth a try.
If you’re actually looking to pay for one I’m really pleased with Goose VPN. I used to recommend Cloak before it rebranded as but it looks like they’ve now merged with Strong VPN which I have no experience with.
Whomever you go with, this is one time you really, really should read the privacy policy before using it.
I ended up ditching .
I had severe slowness issues as well (both at home and on the road, travel for work a lot), and then when I learned about their logging and not publishing a transparency report, I uninstalled and went with another one.
From a technical perspective, that should be something that you can easily work around by figuring out from the logs what NextDNS is blocking that's preventing the VPN from connecting (assuming that's what doesn't work). Once the VPN is connected, NextDNS is unlikely to be blocking anything within the VPN tunnel. That said, if you're happy with OpenDNS, that's good too. :)
ETA: I still find 1Password to be very good. seems to be a dead app walking. Never very good and doesn't seem to be getting updates that will make it any better.
There isn’t for individual account security. Are you using a password manager like 1Password or LastPass? Are you using generated passwords? Enabling multi-factor authentication when available? Or a hardware key? That’s the best I can recommend for individual account security. For device/network security, make sure you’re installing all updates, if possible use a router that offers network protection, like the eero mesh with eero Secure/Secure+ - this device protects your network and by extension anything on it, if you opt for the higher tier, you get things like 1Password subscription, VPN protection (automatically puts your device onto VPN when on untrusted networks like the local cafe) and Malwarebytes, for protecting your computer/laptop devices.
u/SpongeBobaFetaCheese Hi There, Baseball is quite awesome, hopefully I don’t throw you any curve balls and try to answer your questions accurately, so here goes. 1. That is correct. Outside of hardwiring into the eero you want, you can’t force a device to a certain eero. 2. You are correct our “Cupcakes” are eero 5 series. Dual band and our previous generation. 3. Secure+ has malware bytes subscription attached and has up to 5 users. So you don’t have to pay extra. They are our partner and you sign up through our eero app. Another note with secure+ you get 1password and as well. I hope this answers your questions and Play Ball!
Gotcha. I actually still have a Secure+ subscription since I use 1Password, , and MalwareBytes, but I may let it lapse given I could likely just go directly with 1Password Family & save a few bucks.
And FWIW, I agree it's a shit move on eero's part to require a subscription for bandwidth monitoring. I suppose there may be some cloud expense for them to store and compute the data, but it doesn't seem likely it costs as much as they're charging. :-/

1Password
With 1Password, the only login you need is the one for your 1Password account. It can even auto-generate strong passwords for you. So, go ahead and forget your passwords.

Malwarebytes
Malwarebytes is an anti-malware solution that scans, cleans, and protects your computers and mobile devices from viruses, ransomware, and more.
3 DEVICES
Browse the web privately and securely with a VPN, ideal for people who work from home or when using potentially unsecured public wifi at cafes and airports.
FOR FAMILIES PLAN
I concur. Eero should try to make contracts with Private Internet Access instead of the oh-so-questionable VPN service. Nobody mentions what I perceive to be the peculiarity of the non-trustworthy service with a trustworthy product like Eero and trustworthy service like Eero Secure.
1Password is so much more versatile than the keychain. I wouldn’t want to be without it.
I’ve been getting some grief lately from the app for Mac and I hope they fix that. Not a concern for the OP I know, but important for others to know About.
I don't think that's right. They provide a free account for , but it's only to be used on client devices. There's no way to enable it ON the Eero to protect the whole network, which I believe is what the OP was asking about.
Thanks. I need to look into doing this. I only have secure for 1Password at this point. is an unusable vpn for my purpose, which is protecting me on unsecured public networks. And I don’t need malware bytes.
It should work on LTE. Maybe your VPN profile is borked. If you open the Networks tab (the lock icon bottom center), and scroll to the bottom of that tab, you’ll see an option to “Reinstall VPN profile”. Try running that first.
In the “old days” the only way to fix the VPN profile was to uninstall and reinstall the entire app. heard the complaints and added the Reinstall VPN profile option to at least make it easier to fix.
What/who are you hoping to spoof with your MAC spoofing
and how did you determine this was something that would help you try to be secure
?
As for VPNs - most have tradeoffs of one sort or another. General advice is "find one that says they don't log" - 100% of VPNs will allow access to their premises/equipment/networks with a warrant, so just be aware that "won't log" doesn't mean "can't be logged by law enforcement with a warrant".
I use because it's included in Eero's Secure+ at no extra cost, and I use it if I'm on a network without a reasonable expectation of privacy (hotel, coffee shop, etc.) I don't know about YouTubers in general, but NordVPN is one I've seen sponsor Mark Rober, and they do not log, source:
Secure+ comes with MWB.
As for , it would be more for my portable devices such as phones etc. IPVanish just as good I guess. Remember that they all bypass Secure’s DNS checks if you’re on your home eero network.
Also remember that Eero Secure+ (VPN+Malwarebytes+1Password) is a steal of a deal. Malwarebytes and 1Password are the best of the best, IMHO, for their categories. .
Side note, this is why I use and recommend it activates immediately on connection of any untrusted network. If I have to turn it on then data from my phone has potentially already travelled over the connection.
Eero Plus that sends DNS to Zscaler? Worth it? I have liked the service for threat blocking of everyday stuff and ad blocking, but is that worth it? I assume it keeps your isp from snooping your packets, but I don’t know what I don’t know.
Also, ? Worth it?
is just a commodity consumer VPN service that is included with eero plus. It's a nice value add, but doesn't give any access to your local network unless you install their private endpoint server. If you're already running OpenVPN to get local access to your pihole and fancy streaming, you're g2g. Use if you don't need that stuff on public wifi.
~~I actually have support disable all the features of pro, because they don’t work with some stuff I use (UnblockUs, specifically). It’s worth the money for and 1Password family accounts.”, alone~~
Point stands, but I was talking about the wrong feature
I’m thinking about cancelling my E+ subscription as well. I use my Eeros in Bridge mode with a separate router and I run Pi-Hole on my network, so that makes E+ redundant for me (E+ doesn’t even work in Bridge mode, IIRC).
I keep it around for the discounted 1Password, , and Malwarebytes.
