Day 2 Challenge: Inner Game -- Future Self Exercise
Today was an inner game day --I was focusing on my motivation and mental habits. I built on the "why" exercise from Adam Reed by applying the insights of Hal Hershfield, a behavioral scientist at UCLA.
Hershfield studies how we relate to our future selves. In this talk, he describes an experiment which measured people's relationships to their future self. Here's a quote from his work:
>"when the future self seems similar to the present self, when it is imbued with realism and vividness, and when it is seen in positive terms, people are more willing to make sacrifices today that may benefit them at some point in the years to come."
In other words, there are 3 points:
similarity to present self (it has to be relatable vs. being viewed as a stranger who is totally different from yourself)
It has to be realistic and vivid
Keep it positive
Action 1: Reframe your "why" as a letter from your future self and re-write your why to have lots of concrete detail + emotional descriptions
I rewrote my "why" as a letter from my future self and posted it to my door. Here's a picture
Something I'm still working on is refining my "why" itself to be more vivid and realistic. Include really specific details and talk about your emotions. So if your goal is to get more fit, what does that mean? Am I going to be 130 pounds with 12% body fat? Can I see the outline of my tricep when I look in the mirror? How does it feel? Do I feel proud of how healthy and fit I am? Write out ALL those details.
This is a work in progress, and I'm going to be revisiting my "Why" once per week to give it more life.
Action 2: Extra Credit. Cut and paste an aged version of your face onto your letter
I made a more advanced version of my letter to try to get a real image on there of my future self. To do this, I used a face-aging software, agingbooth (available for iphone and android) to age my face and I cut-and-pasted the image onto my letter.
Ping me if you want help with this.
Look out for tomorrow, Day 3. It will be an "outer game" day with specific tactics to wake up early.
There's an app for that.
