I gave up and paid for a 3rd party app: AutoAlly.
The single-touch home screen widget to activate pre-conditioning is great.
I've been working on doing something of this nature in the app I developed, AutoAlly. But instead of coloring the roads, i've been using polygons to show line of sight distance, as well as distance you can travel in a given 10/20min span.
As someone else in here has mentioned, doing this is extremely heavy computation wise. It's one thing to figure out everything within say a 20 mile range, but once you get over 100+ it gets really complex.
I do agree though OP, that this is something that should be solved. When I bought my i8 and saw that the official app didn't give me any range maps I was rather surprised. Though I think the approach i've taken is a bit better, as you can still see you general radius of travel, but you could then still also color the roads based on current traffic conditions.
Just some extra food for thought.
Just released AutoAlly for Tesla / BMW i Vehicles. AutoAlly allows you to remotely control your Tesla Model S, Model X, BMW i3, or BMW i8.
Features:
Vehicle status (charging state, mileage, door status, windows, etc etc)
Range Maps to show how far you can drive
Charging locations within your range
Fuel stations (for BMW vehicles)
Parking locations
Remotely control vehicle (lock doors, flash light, start climate, send POI, etc etc)
VIN based information including recalls and service bulletins
Social media feeds of the vehicles brand
Live chat with other owners, and other users of the app
'Find Vehicle' feature which leverages maps, augmented reality, and geofences to optionally automatically trigger commands (example, start climate control once close to vehicle)
Android Wear app with quick commands
Android Wear Watchface
Muzei extension
DashClock extension
Android Nougat Quick tiles for commands
Quick Commands widgets, and vehicle location widget
Fingerprint/pin based security
There are also some long terms goals feature wise. Really looking to expand on the automation side of things. Ideally, I want the app to support as many brands as possible, so if your vehicle has an 'official app', and think you might be interested in helping bring support over, please get in touch!
The release got off to a rough start due to some issues on the Tesla side, but the majority of those have now been sorted (Thanks to some extremely helpful owners!). Would love some more feedback (and reviews, good or bad!).
