I personally noticed a huge clarity improvement and can hear noticeable differences when using the same headphones and listening to the same audio. Hearing certain details I've never picked up before.
Atmos itself sucks and I just leave it off since music sounds way better without it. I use this bass booster to give me the desired bass boost (allows you to just increase bass without fiddling with mids/treble of you want) and combined with the DAC I couldn't be happier from a mobile device.
I haven't had any issues so far with any apps not working with the DAC. Some people have reported some issues but nothing to report on my end.
I also don't get any buzzing when listening while charging (headphones at work). The Bluetooth audio also sounds better than my previous devices on my car stereo.
TL;DR: audio is awesome but Atmos is useless.
Same problem, doesn't work anymore after a certain OS update a fes months ago, I use this app

Did you find a fix? I would really appreciate it if you shared it with me, thanks!
For headphones and Bluetooth streaming, I find this phone does really lack punchy bass.
Try this bass booster app. It solved the problem for me and it allows you to adjust just how much bass you want without activating an equalizer so it doesn't distort audio as much as other apps.
Don't bother with Atmos for headphones or Bluetooth, but Atmos delivers muce more punch and depth to the phone speakers for sure.
Not being rooted, I installed Bass Booster (the Pro version due to additional options) and it seems to work system wide and is also selectable in any app that links into an equalizer (Phonograph, Play Music, Spotify). I'll use this until Maxxaudio is added back.

If that doesn't work, but it does with other earbuds, blame the walled garden that is Apple
