I've been lurking /r/gamedev for a while now, including basically all of the time spent developing Beam. Beam is an Android puzzle game four friends and I made. During development I found this sub helpful and super encouraging and wanted to say thanks!
Found another one on a second playthrough!
Level 6: 18/19
>!Down Left Up Down Left, Up Right Down Left Up, Left Right Down Left Right, Up Right Up.!<
>What did you think about the overall difficulty of it?
I think the difficulty was pretty smooth actually. I think level 6 was a little bit too much of a jump up. I didn't understand that the moveable boxes only moved if you hit them from 2+ steps away until that level. So, level 6 wasn't making much sense until I realized that. I think you could insert a level between 5 and 6 that just tutorialized that aspect and it would help.
Additionally, I don't understand the rules for the dangerous enemies. Like, level 6 teaches you to not touch the red enemies, but then level 9 requires that you do hit them! What's going on with that? Is it their facing? But don't they orient their spears to point at you?
>Was it challenging enough?
I'd say yes, for a short game. I haven't gotten a perfect score on level 7 yet.
If you add more content, the trick is going to be how to make levels that are actually interesting (instead of just a computational grind) and not so hard that people just give up. That said, puzzle games are hard. That's part of what people like about them, so don't avoid "hard", just don't go too hard too fast.
>It’s my first attempt at a puzzle game so it’s hard for me to tell if they’re at all challenging.
Yeah. I hear that. My advice is to just playtest it to death. Watch other people play it, then fix the things they needlessly stumble on, then repeat.
I think your best levels are 6, 8, and 9. Those were all quite satisfying to solve.
>Also, what was the name of your game?
Credit to the rest of the team too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ettu.beam.android
Some friends and I made the puzzle game Beam. We're pretty proud of it, and it's only a 6MB download for several hours of gameplay.
You might enjoy Beam! It is a similar style of game, but a different core mechanic.
