I don't think you can read non-Kindle books with the Kindle app. You need to use a different app--I use Cool Reader (for Android), but other apps are available (e.g., Google Books, which allows you to upload your book from your computer and then download it to your phone without having to transfer the file manually to your phone's SD card).
