There's my open source project Cumulus TV, which allows users to add and play any HLS stream: https://github.com/fleker/cumulustv

Being a shield owner myself, i would recommend it together with the shield remote. However if you are willing to wait for a while, xiaomi is coming out with its own android tv box, and maybe asus would release an updated version of the nexus player soon.
There is also an ongoing promotion for the razer forge at $99 but many of us in this subreddit would advise against it.
For the m3u8 stream, you can try cumulus tv, created by a redditor I think
No, I'm not. I know what that is & that's not it.
I'm referring to an app that was in the Play Store last I saw it.
And the DEV I was referring to is the guy who went to work for Samsung sometime last year.
Think his last name started with an F.. not sure tho..?
EDIT: Found it! It's Cumulus TV by Felker Tech
Cumulus to add to Live Channels.
Which I use from the Live Channel app
Yes those apps are on the Play Store:

European HDHomerun Connect should give you DVB-T2 in Live Channels. But since you say you have cable, are you sure you're not looking for a DVB-C tuner? In which case, you should aim for the Expand instead, I have no clue why HDHR couldn't figure out how to make one device with a T2/C hybrid tuner. Also, if your cable needs to use a CI/CAM to decrypt the signal, you're out of luck so far.
As for m3u, there's a couple of options right now, I prefer to use Cumulus TV to get it into Live Channels.
Then you have it all in that one app: Live Channels - it comes pre-installed on Android TV... which makes me wonder, how do you do it right now?
I don't know about auto-opening the Live Channels app, I think there is something out there, but I like to see the Android TV home screen with its recommendations etc. after it's turned on, Live Channels is anyway just one app selection away, I have arranged it to be the very first app in the first row beneath the recommendations row.
i can't help with sources, but once you've got them, you can use cumulus tv to get them into live channels.

Does this app do what you're looking for? I know the dev of it lurks on here.

Thank you Shadowman! I think you will be surprised as to how closely we align. On second thought, I don't think it is a surprise because i feel most Nexus Player users have these same feelings. The reason we care so much is because of how obvious the potential is here... Anyways, I will just go down through your post and add my thoughts along the way.
>I remember reading that the most used apps would get shifted to the front. This has never happened and you can't even customize it yourself. I have to scroll ALLLL the way to the right to get to Plex just because I downloaded it last.
This is precisely what the PART ONE of my series addressed. Check it out. I even made a terrible photoshop solution :)
> Though the competitors can do this (forge and shield)
I wouldn't really classify them as competitors as they are Android TV brothers, but this is a point well taken. This is also something that happens with phone OEMs all the time where Samsung or Moto will fix something about Android that it takes Google years to do in AOSP.. Frustrating.
> The live TV section is useless as it only allows weather channel, pluto, and something else useless. While its a little laggy, I tend to use the Pluto app as it has better performance. Though when I first bought it I thought I would be able to integrate with current cable service and use this as a UI, that never happened.
The Live Channels app is another great in theory/loads of potential thing Google has going on. One thing you would be interested in knowing is that your Nexus Player actually can integrate with your current cable service. I wrote a guide on it HERE. Basically, you need to also have a network tuner device by HDHomerun. I currently have one on my network that is attached to an antenna. Both of my NPs have access to my local broadcast channels through the Live Channels app and no messy wires! As far as cable goes, HDHomerun does make a network tuner that uses cable cards so it is theoretically possible. However, I have not tested this. Probably will next week.
Also, one of the other writers developed this APP that is compatible with Live Channels. > Also I hate how you can't force close apps yourself.
You actually can if you go to Settings>App>(SlingTV)>Force stop Not that this is actually user friendly, but it is there.
> A lot of my compaints are towards the interface. Lack of customization, its not optimized for the user at all, and there is nothing we can do about it. The recommendations are OK at best, but I never use them. I feel like it should know that I watch and that I want to watch the next episode whether it be Netflix, Hulu, Plex or whatever but I won't blame that on Google as it could be the developers not passing it back with the proper APIs (haven't researched it).
This will be PART 3 in my series as I agree the recommendations are almost completely rubbish and barely customizeable. I think you are right that a lot of this in on the developers, but I am going to give Google some blame as well. It is their job to promote and encourage devs to make a nice experience.
>So thats a quick summary. Everything you have said/shown is spot on. I wish this would get more coverage. I have been sharing them. I just really want them to revamp the interface
Thank you so much for your feedback and your support! My ultimate goal is to give these little issues more exposure and thus light a fire under Google's butt. If you did want to help, you could try posting these articles to /r/Android every now and then because as it is my article, it gets shot down by the self-promotion detection. Obviously there are a lot more eyes and more rules on that subreddit and I just can't post my own stuff over there :(
You can manually add ccloud channels (or any m3u stream) to the Live Channels app using Cumulus TV.
Not Kodi but works with Googlecast: Rocket Video Cast for Chromecast: Best Browser to watch and stream movies to your TV by Omar Mody https://appsto.re/us/3IlVI.i
However I recommend just using cumulusTV and entering the URL as a channel. It is integrated with live channels on the NP
You can also use Kodi by making a .strm file on your shared folder. http://kodi.wiki/view/internet_video_and_audio_streams
Or make a m3u file with that url in it and use PVR simple client in Kodi
