You can install the Google Cast app on a phone or tablet and customize the backdrop from there, including adding local weather.
I use FTP server for Android TV and Solid Explorer and its waaaay better than X-plorer and ES
I upgraded to 8.0 November patch, ripped the APK, then reverted to 7.1.2 and Google Assistant seems functional
I figured submitting to APKMirror would be the best option
Disable autoplay. Then when an episode ends, press the back button (to go to the show listing) then either play or select to start the next episode. Its annoying, but less so than having to re-enter your password every time.
>As I am not a developer and have exactly zero coding experience
You won't like this solution as you need to be somewhat tech-savvy but you can change the order.
Go to /data/data/com.google.android.leanbacklauncher/databases using ES file explorer
Find the launcher.db file and get it on your computer. I just copied and pasted it into my Google Drive account which I have connected to ES File explorer.
Download SQLite Browser
Open up the file and go the entity_score table
Rearrange the scores as you please.
Replace the launcher.db file with your newly modified one.
Restart the Nexus Player and enjoy your new look.
But I do agree there should be a easy way to change the order so everyone can do it!
Use Unlocator instead. Apart from working with every version of the app, you'll get much better performance than with a VPN.

Same thing happened to me. First off, it went to a really long keyboard then just stopped showing up. The toggles the other person suggested didn't work, so I installed another keyboard and it works fine. Remember and make it the default in the settings if you get it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard
Doesn't need to be sideloaded. Google Play link
The catch is, it's not free... and it doesn't work all the time. You have to fiddle with it a bit sometimes. But no, it doesn't need to be side loaded, and it has a fairly nice 10' interface, as they say.
I don't know why I said Windows PC. A Linux PC or a Mac would be fine. I'm even proficient enough to use Linux and I'm comfortable doing so, but I'm a gamer so Windows it is...
Archos Video is better than Plex because it doesn't require a server to be running if you have a hard drive attached to your router. There is a free version but I gladly got the paid version because it's so awesome.
However, if you plan on only stream from your computer while it's running, you can look into Plex too. But Plex does require you run a server.
have you tried Android TV Remote Control?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote
Do you have an otg cable? if you do, you can try using your kb or mouse from your PC.
It's not officially possible but, you can do it with third party apps.
I use Slideshow for Picasa - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.dip.mukacho.picasadaydream
but, fairly sure that in the past I've also used PhotoGuru Media Browser - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cmpsoft.MediaBrowser
I was able to update it from the Play Store website using my laptop. Just click Install and choose "No carrier Asus Nexus Player" as the device.
I'm doing it using [TVHeadEnd](tvheadend.org), right now using a Raspberry Pi 2, before that I did it on a virtualbox vm, and even before, on a dedicated PC I used as a media center. If you have a decent PC, as this runs on linux, the easiest way would be to run a vm with OpenELEC, that includes it. You can use Kodi (ex-XBMC) for a client, or TVHClient from the play store (sideloaded). You can also stream from most web browsers just pointing at the IP of the machine running tvheadend
Bigger version of the same hub. Because it can supply more power it should be able to power portable external hard drives on each port so that a dual USB cable isn't needed for extra power.
here is the Nova Launcher APK, but i wouldnt recommend getting into side loading launchers and customizing your home screen if youre not willing to tinker.
if you do want to try it, just download that file, put it on your NP, or onto a network drive that your NP can access, and open the APK from a file manager app like ES File Explorer.
This guy's hub is powered. I've also been looking at this guy (no ethernet).
I was having the same issue. Here's how I fixed.
Note: You will see an update for Netflix from now on in the Play Store. don't install it.
Not sure what you mean but TV App Repo might be what you're looking for, it adds lean back short cuts to the app from the home screen
HAL Launcher:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.i.akihiro.halauncher&hl=en
As for Sideloading the Leanback Launcher (the launcher the NP uses) you can look on XDA.
Just don't take any of the flame you're going to get for asking personally. Most of the people there are nice enough, but as you do anywhere on the internet there are a few douches there.
Confirmed 10¢ in the US, and confirmed listed as compatible with the NP.
(You can make the ¢ symbol on a full PC keyboard with ALT+0162, FYI.)
Also, thanks for the heads up. I'll only buy the whole thing on PC (shoot... Can I even use this without a controller? What about a mouse? I have a K400) but it will be nice to play with on the NP, and for 10¢, why not?
You can connect your PS3 controller if your NP is rooted and your running the SixAxis App (side loaded).
That is exactly how mine is setup, I'm also playing around with emulators.
I'm not sure how you would wirelessly connect the Wii controller.
To cast my photos and videos from my iPad to my Nexus Player I use "Photo Video Cast" from the App Store.
Also, if I want to mirror your iOS screen to the Nexus Player, You can purchase Mirroring360 from the play store. It let's any Android device act like an AirPlay receiver. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.splashtop.m360&hl=en
You could always use the Android TV Remote Control App on your phone. It's designed to work with Android TV and Nexus Players:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote&hl=en
If you are rooted, I'd give Mouse Toggle a try. Haven't used it since I flashed stock back for 6.0, but it worked great when I tried it a while back.
Hmm... Not sure what to tell you. My backup solution when I can't find the remote (or it loses sync) has been to use this remote app from the Play store or to connect a wired gamepad, mouse, or keyboard directly to the Nexus through an OTG cable. The wired stuff seems to work right away without needing any configuration.
Yes, I have it working.
I rooted the Player then used this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryosoftware.adbw
To enable adb wifi on startup. Probably could have been done with an init-script as well.
Ctrl - ESC is the shortcut for MENU but it hasn't been working since the 5.0 build. Even sending the key via adb it just doesn't work. So if you have anything that uses the overflow menu for settings then you are SOL.
One slight possibility is using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher&hl=en
If the application you are using publishes the settings menu as an activity you can launch it with that. Just hit the dropdown in the upper left and select "All activities", scroll to your desired application, and click. It then shows all the activities of that particular application.
I used this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop
If you go to the link in a browser, rather than the play store on your phone you can push it to your nexus player, no need to side load. Just select your NP from the install list. I only have a remote as well and it works, not perfectly though. Sometimes I need to do a lot of d-padding to get it to where I want to go.
Hope this helps.
In the Harmony program, you call it a ChinaVasion CVSB-983. I also install this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=innerlife.keyboard.multilanguagekeymapredefiner&hl=en SO I can customise buttons for Kodi.
This seems like a good alternative to Narwhal TV for reddit which I've been having some issues with.
Most notably, it ALWAYS asks if I want to open it in YouTube, even if I tell it to ALWAYS open in YouTube. I thought this might be an issue with Nexus Player or Android TV.
Can you confirm that this isn't an issue with Hopwatch?
According to this post, Sideloaded apps are NOT updated by the play store - http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/general/ref-collection-nexus-player-apks-t2976537
Looks like it will be worth the effort to get it installed correctly, or subscribe to that thread for email updates on new posts.
Here is the store link for the ATV version - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netflix.ninja
No way! I actually just tried to install that cause I thought I was going insane and I got an error. Is it this one?
You probably need a powered otg hub for the hard drive to work, I've got one like this with a power supply, right now I have a 32GB microSD, a usb-ethernet adapter and an xbox 360 wireless receiver. Tested it with a usb drive and it worked, but for now 32GB is enough. I'm rooted and mount the card on boot.
It has been that way for as long as I remember. What is your server? you may want to use another protocol.
I used dlna for a while from a Mac mini server. Mainly because issues with apple screwing up SMB and NFS protocols. If FTP is available on your server it actually works well. If you have a Mac here it an old tutorial for enabling FTP on OS X that still works: http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/29/start-an-ftp-or-sftp-server-in-mac-os-x-lion/
Edit: provided you don't need a DLNA servers transcoding
There's a few different ways. There are a few apps that can do this. I usually use titanium backup. But you can see this thread for more
Is he trying to mirror? iPhones cannot mirror to Chromecast or the NP via the GoogleCast protocol like android. It is not part of the iPhones operating system. Allcast and other GoogleCast capable iOS apps will cast to the Chromecast or NP because the feature is coded into the app. So basically iPhones can't mirror but will cast cast from specific apps. The screen your son is seeing is the picture being displayed the screen saver mode. It allows identification of the picture being displayed also you can see photo credits.
Edit: a list of iPhone apps that cast http://appshopper.com/search?device=iphone&sort=rel&platform=&dir=asc&searchdev=all&search=Chromecast&cat=
You need to download it from here https://kodi.tv/download/ Make sure you download the Android x86 version.
You can either side load it using Es file explorer Or if you have a web browser installed already just go to that link and install it straight
You will still need to use Hola unblocker, Getflix is only a DNS service, you need to use a VPN style service. Install the browser plug in Hola unblocker as it will be the easiest way - http://hola.org/
im thinking on just getting the amazon basic https://www.amazon.ca/AmazonBasics-USB-Ethernet-Network-Adapter/dp/B00M77HLII/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1516827950&sr=8-11&keywords=ethernet+usb+adapter
and the https://www.amazon.ca/AmazonBasics-4-Port-USB-2-0-Ultra-Mini/dp/B003M0NURK/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1516828172&sr=1-15&keywords=amazon+basics+usb these should work fine
Canadian with DirecTV here. Using HBO Go through Private Internet Access (VPN service) with no issue. HBO Now is the standalone service.
Since I also have a US based credit card and am able to use Go for free since HBO is part of my DirecTV package, couldn't tell you about Now but doubtful they'd accept a Canadian card.
The Private Internet Access client running on the NP due to a rotation bug issue also required root and xposed to be installed along with a rotation lock xposed add-on. I believe there is a regular app in the Play Store to do same but in my case also wanted Adblock and MinMinguard for a perfect Chromecast experience.
You could also setup a VPN directly on your router but in order not to suffer any degradation to your bandwidth, it requires a powerful CPU in it (higher end model) or you run something like pfSense on an older desktop which would then act as your router with your existing one acting as a wireless access point.
Okay that's great news.
So I have my NP which is rooted and is running the stock Android 5.1. I've downloaded the latest Netflix.ninja Android TV app from the store. And I actually used the unlocator DNS service which uses the DNS servers 185.35.35.35 and 185.35.37.37.
When I change my ipv4 settings on my notebook, the Netflix web client works and has the US content.
But on my NP it keeps showing only the local content after setting up the static ip with the alternate DNS servers.
In order to fix it, I tried using AFWall+ to add a rule in IPTables which forwards traffic send to the Google DNS Servers to the Unlocator DNS servers, but this results into the Netflix client not being able to connect and find the Netflix Servers.
That compatability list is very incomplete for some reason. I can confirm that Unlocator (with DNS set on the router) works with every service I've tried, including Netflix and Crunchyroll, etc. Basically no different to general Android support.
I've been using this one off Amazon. I like that it has the power switches for each plug and it's powered from the device. It's only got 4 ports so I'm not sure if that meets your need.
I like mine and have had no problems. It does feel a little cheap and the click is a little loud though.
However this gets a lot of usuage and im wondering what would be a cheap replacement if this were to break down the road? And i would hate to lose voice search, use it all the time.
I wish the np was a hit so getting replacement remotes would be easy.
Edit: anyone know if this works with voice search with the np?
The Fire remote is a decent replacement. I tried to get my remote replaced. There is no way to simply order one, which I tried by contacting Google first, who then sent me to Asus for warranty replacement. In my case, the remote stopped working, and ASUS wanted me to mail in the remote, wait 6 to 8 weeks yada yada, when all I wanted was to BUY another damn remote. Anyway, i said eff it and bought the fire remote on amazon.
If you have an android phone/tablet, there is also an app for Android TV that works very nicely. I just prefer the tactile feel of an actual remote, personally.
Awesome, thanks! While I was looking for it I came across this; would that be sufficient? Would I just plug it up underneath?
Fair point. In my case, my trackball is wireless, so I can carry it to the couch. I also have a Logitech K400. Used to be $25 shipped, but Amazon woke up and realized how popular and great they were, and now they want another $15. The K400 Plus is $26 shipped, but I don't know about it. Considering getting one just to have one in both rooms. The K400 is absolutely a wonderful keyboard to have. Won't measure up to a mechanical, obviously, but for something you can put on your lap on the couch, it goes above and beyond. Again, no experience with the Plus.
I got this one (use it in "B" mode), and it works perfectly- Moga
Hope this works fine, reviews look pretty good. A lot of people saying it works with their S3, Nexus 5, 6, 7, etc.
Thats the one I had. Worked fine for me.
I bought LinkS 3 in 1 USB 2.0 Hub 2 Ports + OTG Function+Ethernet Compatible for PC, Cell Phones, EReaders, Tablets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S9C27TS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_6Hgvwb21XZ0TQ and it's super fast. Previously I was wireless. Our NP is only usb 2.0 so I don't know.
The OP wants a USB hub to attach multiple USB devices as well, so your suggestion is not enough for him. For the purposes of this thread and anybody who reads it, however, I should chime in that there's a version with the MicroUSB plug so you don't have to buy an extra adapter.
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Ethernet-Compatible-Smartphones-AX88772A/dp/B00RM3KXAU/
I can also confirm it works. I've been using it for many months now without a single issue.
Lenovo N5902
It requires a Wi-Fi dongle so you would need an OTG cable. It's fairly comfortable the button placements a little weird I prefer the old trackpad addition. But the older one is not backlit.
I finally ordered this for 5$ one:http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0050PUGZE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
To use it with my harmony. It dubs as a keyboard and it works with the Nexus player.
Ok, just dirty flashed 6.0 over my existing 5.1.1 setup (fastboot flashed bootloader, rebooted, and then flashed boot, system and recovery). Took quite a while to optimize 60 apps (much longer than last update).
I'm using a micro usb otg hub like this one, plugged in a 16GB class 10 micro sd card (freshly fat32 formatted), had the system adopt it as internal storage and moved some heavy apps (Kodi, Retroarch, MAME, Riptide GP2). The internal free space released was a lot smaller than what it was supposedly moving. Rebooted to see if I'd get the internal space back and the card was no longer detected :(
Had two options at settings/storage, one to format the card again, and one to forget the older signature. Now (almost sure unlike the first time) it offered me to format it as internal or removable storage. Formatted it again as internal, now it complained that it could be too slow but I went ahead. Reinstalled a couple of the now missing apps, and they went straight to the card. I'll install a few more and see how stable it works from now on, and will probably factory reset if I still have issues.
Haven't had much time since 6.0 but so far RetroArch had no issues with the few roms I threw at it. The official gamepad was automatically detected this time with decent mappings, it was a pain to setup last time I tried. Sadly, no mame cores on android x86, so I'm using Mame4droid for those roms.
c64.emu also works great, ColEm and Speccy lack menu access but can be used.
I'm using this cheap micro usb otg hub hooked to an old 120GB USB HD I had around, tried using a class 10 micro sd card, but had issues twice (not recognized, losing all that I move/installed on them), then used a microsd-usb adapter and though it worked, it was quite slow. The disk is a western digital passport, it gets powered from the hub, a different hub + a micro usb otg adapter didn't work properly (disk continuously stopped/started spinning).
I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Portta-PETHHA-Extractor-Splitter-Converter/dp/B00HIW7TZC
Works great. Don't mind the negative reviews. It works fine once it's up and running. Takes a second for the audio to come thru right after plugging it in for the very first time.
I've ordered a Madcatz S.U.R.F.R, but i don't expect to see it until november or december.
It can be used for gaming, but i don't expect it shines in that respect. I intend to use it specifically for its keyboard/mouse functionality.. Also, no dongle is required, it is bluetooth.
I use this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Gigabit-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B003VSTDFG
It has built in drivers in Android. Plug it in, and the Nexus Player will automatically use it instead of wifi. If you're ONLY plugging it in with no hub, use this:
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-5in-Micro-Host-Adapter/dp/B00B4GGW5Q
if you dont have an emulator that allows mapping, then that might be a problem, but there are controllers out there with a sufficient number of buttons if you could just re-map it.
for example the mad catz ctrlr has a "start" button and a "back" button, you could also map the D-pad to the n64's yellow "C" keys
I own one of the 4-in-1 OTG adapters with my Nexus TV and it works file (I have an XBOX controller and a USB flash disk plugged into mine with the power adapter unconnected. Seems fine as far as I can tell)
well, if you increase the priority of the Nexus Player's wireless connection and that doesnt fix anything, you could always try getting one of those microUSB-Ethernet adapters to see if that helps.
otherwise, maybe try to drop the video quality and see if that has any affect?
I ended up going this route, but use Kodi instead of Plex (I didn't want any transcoding). 3 days in and so far so good.
I just purchased a hub, this is what I got: http://www.amazon.ca/niceeshop-Multi-fonction-Charge-Adapter-Connector/dp/B00OK44HNI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427734319&sr=8-2&keywords=micro+usb+hub
Hopefully it works. I'd like to control my nexus player with my harmony one remote (no bluetooth), so I got one of these: http://www.amazon.ca/Windows-Control-Infrared-Receiver-Ultimate/dp/B003WF0FBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427734395&sr=8-1&keywords=mce+remote
If this remote works with it then the harmony will too.
It doesn't appear that it compatible with Android TV devices, anyway this lead me to find the following: LeanKey pretty much the same as the old one (although it lacks autocomplete hints like @bla.bla for fields identified as email input for example.
Another annoyance I forgot to mention of the new one is when deleting chars holding the button just deletes one letter at a time, bravo google.
Did a quick search only thing I came across is this Madefire Comics and Motion Books not sure if this is what you're looking for since I don't read comic books myself :/
This should be possible the same way this app does it. The Nexus Player has an HDMI cec API a developer just needs to make an app that uses it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kba.tvswitch.app
I use this 3rd party rootless input method https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper with a minix a2 airmouse/keyboard that I usee with a minix STB, on my NP. It works great can remap just about anything. i also use it with a mid 2000s BT keyboard only mapping key combos to my six most commonly used apps on the NP minimizes ever seeing the homescreen, just go from app to app. that same mapping works on the minix a2 airmouse.
Like you I have a K700 lying around from a logitech revue, finally, gonna order a unifying receiver this week, the above input method even has scan codes for the k700's colored function keys on the top row.
I use TV Player for Spotify: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sregg.android.tv.spotifyPlayer It's a free app that works pretty well, the only downside is that it's a bit of a pain to go from your playlist to the player controls. There's Emma for Spotify, which has easier access to controls but it limited in the ease of finding content, esp. in the free version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alexfillips.emmaTV
Can't you just sideload the android APK and launch it with Chainfire's Sideload Launcher? I'm not at home, so I can't test it at the moment.
Which remote app to be specific?
Edit: that only shows m3u files, does m3u8 work the same way?
Edit 2: this remote app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote
This one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote&hl=en
It's very buggy though, so it might not work well.
And you might need this Kodi addon for m3u8.
What the guy who posted right before you meant was that yes, the Twitch app at the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.twitch.android.app , CAN be downloaded straight onto the Nexus Player itself. Using the same Google account on a PC browser as you have signed into your Nexus Player, visit that link in a PC web browser (the PC Chrome browser for simplicity, preferably). Note when you click on the "Install" button from the PC browser, a dropdown box will appear with all your different devices which have that specific Google account signed in on them. Your Nexus Player should be listed in that dropdown menu somewhere. Just choose your Nexus Player from there and proceed through the next screen and after a second or two, check out the Play Store app on your NP and you should see the Twitch app installing. Bada-bing...It's like magic! Lol
I wanted to as well as RCB and Kodi never worked for me and I hate the feel of Retro Arch. If you find a solid solution you let me know. I've been told this isn't a bad solution https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vektor.gamesome&hl=en
Not that I have seen. But you may want to look into HALauncher as a replacement launcher
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.i.akihiro.halauncher&hl=en
You will lose the recommendations section.
Also look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/Launcher
> Built-in ZIP and RAR support: Allows you to compress and decompress ZIP files, unpack RAR files, and create encrypted (AES 256 bit) ZIP files
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop
Try ProgTV. It basically uses a Windows PC to replicate the HDHomerun functionality. Plug the usb tuner into a desktop and or laptop and run their software to stream it over wifi. At least that's what the app description says.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.progdvb.progtva
I am having the exact same issue. I've written to Netflix and got nowhere. This has been very frustrating for me because I'm trying to get rid of my Roku. Netflix is the only thing holding that up.
This is the Android TV version - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netflix.ninja
Hasn't updated since Sept. 3rd. The other Netflix app for phones and tablets has updated with Marshmallow support and bluetooth fixes.
The best solution currently for casting files on your phone (as well as from local network via smb or DLNA) is LocalCast, IMHO.
But it's true that the casting implementation on the Nexus Player (offically 'Google Cast') seems to differ from the Chromecast, and some services/apps work on a Chromecast but not on NP ... presumably these are bugs that Google is currently working on.
I talked with ASUS support on Live chat. they do not have nor plan a SKU for just the candybar remote. To setup an RMA of the remote you must send in all parts [NexusPlayer, NexusRemote, Power Adapter] to have the Nexus Remote serviced. so we would be with out our player for weeks while the repair the remote. which I'm not willing to do.
I've Opted to just use the Android TV Remote Control app. I've come to the conclusion i like it more than the candy bar because it's one less thing in my house I have on my coffee stand. My broken remote is now sitting in the trash (batteries removed)
I have used Link2SD in the past on some of my phones for moving apps to the SD card using symlink. Its pretty painless once its setup, and you can have it auto symlink when you install new apps.
Could you tell me how you're testing bandwidth on your Nexus Player? Stupid question, I'm well aware of that. But I wasn't able to run a speed test (Wifi Speed Tester) that XDA says would work. I got it to install, but due to the lack of full control via the remote and phone app, I couldn't get a proper test to run. I tried getting to a page via Chrome, but still....same problem with control to get SpeedTest or any other similar site to run. Thanks.
You install the apk's and then launch with this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.tv.sideloadlauncher&hl=en
If you've got any questions, feel free to shoot them my way and I'll do my best to help! I just picked a player up on Monday and went through the process of getting it set up and installing apps the last couple days.
