A great side-scroller where you control a ninja guy on some mission. The game is free to play, and while it contains in-app purchases you can easily enjoy the whole game without spending any money.
Since we're listing solid games here, I'll toss in a few of my one.
Dan the Man: Pretty solid action/platformer, great for picking up for a few minutes and putting down. It's free on Amazon Underground, or you can get it through the Play store if you prefer.
Quadropus Rampage: Pretty solid action roguelite. The controls are a bit frustrating, I've found, but once you get the hang of the touch screen control stick (or properly map a bluetooth controller, annoyingly it doesn't have native mapping) it's great.
Crashlands: A fun little survival game by the same devs as Quadropus Rampage. Technically cross platform, but it works well as a mobile game and has very good touch controls.
Space Marshal: If you have a bluetooth controller this one is a blast, it's a great top down, twin stick action/stealth game. You play as a... well... marshal. In space. Take missions, hunt criminals on some rimworld, with well designed shooting, sneaking, cover, and lobbed weapon controls.
Crimsonland: A port of the PC game, this one is pretty obviously a labor of love. Its mission based structure lends well to mobile though, great to pick up for 10-15 minutes then put back down. Great with a bluetooth controller.
Battle of Polytopia: A lightweight little Civ clone that's short and fun to play.
Card Crawl: A fun little card game where you're a hero clearing a dungeon. The dealer constantly draws out sets of cards with monsters, weapons/shields, potions, coins, and spells which you use to survive the dungeon and claim your coins, which you spend to add more cards to the deck.
Triple Town: A relaxing little puzzle game. An oldie but a goodie, it has a F2P model with turns recharging over time but you can get unlimited turns for $5 IIRC so it's more of a trial mode than a F2P game.
Bloons TD 5: They added a lot of microtransactions to this one, but they were all added on top of rather than in lieu of additional content, so the classic game and all the maps are still 100% playable without them.
Game Dev Tycoon: Port of the PC game. It really works better on mobile IMO, you can crank it up on the train and run a few dev cycles before you get off.
Pocket Mortys: Fun little Pokemon clone based on the Rick and Morty TV series. F2P with some microtransactions, but I'm pretty sure it was actually developed to keep hype high between seasons 2 and 3 so it's fully playable without them.
I'm not even going to touch my collection of tower defense games. I'm a huge fan, and there are so freaking many of those.
There are a ton of great games on mobile. The problem is it's like fishing for gold nuggets in a septic tank - there's so much shit, everything seems tainted by comparison, and you occasionally wind up polishing a turd to see if there's anything of value underneath. But if you have the right tools (I recommend /r/androidgaming, they're hit or miss but much more reliable than the Play store front page IMO) you can find some great stuff.
Check out Dan the Man Its more of beat'em up style but still has platforming elements and you might like it.
