The fun thing about infinite runners is it's a great place to experiment with ideas.
I went for increasing difficulty after the player has (hopefully) mastered something.
The strategy I used was to teach a new mechanic every set of 5 rounds and which on completion would trigger a boss chase level that most of the time utilised the mechanic (if it was something tangible, like with the "avoiding an obstacle mechanic" I would have the boss drop them as you chase).
10 blocks to a screen, 10 screens to a section, 5 sections to a new mechanic and boss level, made it nice and easy to expand. It also made the dev process fun as I could build the game one mechanic idea at a time. I could have kept going for a lot longer, and I guess with the system that's set up I could always come back to it.
First mechanic was blocks that make up the game, then I had objects you need to learn how to collide with, then I had objects that needed to be avoided completely, then I had objects that could slow you down. Each mechanic was introduced on it's own and then combined previous with the other mechanics by the end of that set of sections.

I am really happy with the two speeds. The easy one is still tricky and feels like a puzzle, how to approach. The fast speed is super difficult but doable, I have made it through and killed all that is killable.
Thank you for testing!
Really amazing tracks mate. This suited the game really. I'm not sure what the final gamewill use as the game is in early alpha testing but as long as I'm using it I'll keep your name on the title.
This is the first time i've added audio to this game, also it's late andI just finished the bottle on merlot and cheese, so I hope there's not too many bugs.
Endless Ninja - Google Play Alpha version 27 released today
This is my finite runner game.
I have recently overhauled the boss chase AI, there is now a 3% chance that a boss will kill itself within the first round, still working on lowering that. I have been doing extensive testing trying to locate the instances where a boss will get stuck but running automated levels throughout the night at different speeds. It's been quite a bit of fun, if still a little frustrating.
The only other real change was I turned the alpha right down on the trees so you can see the obstacles (as there were some complaints), and then I added a second row of trees on the background to make up for it aesthetically.
I would love feedback on the following:
If interested in testing out all the boss levels I can release a version that cuts out the levels when I finish work tonight.
Thanks guys, as always love your feedback
EDIT: I only just uploaded the new APK for v27 so if it's still v26 there are a couple of boss bugs I ironed out but other than that it should be ok. Save games carry across updates.

This is my endless runner game. Fixed lots of bugs, overhauled the Boss AI (still needs tinkering).

I have added a game changing mechanic that curbs the difficulty and gives players more chance in correcting mistakes during Slow and Fast modes. The further you are to the left to the running position the slower the stage runs at, speeding up as it the character automatically catches back up to it’s preferred position. This gives the player much easier recovery on Slow mode and a mildly easier recover on Fast, but zero allowance on Brutal. I would love some feedback on it.
Feedback Request:
Please note that you can exit game or to menu and continue at any speed without losing progress! The game is saved to the start of every Part.
Thank you so much!
I Haven't worked on this game for a while because I could not figure out how to "curb your unenthusiasm". Basically it was just too damn hard. But thanks to a fantastic (and now painfully obvious) idea from a fellow gamedevaroo /u/anthas I have created "the handicap" on my slow and fast modes that slows the stage when you are pushed back by blocks. It took some time because the stage creation method went all funky when I slowed time and I had to dig through some painful code.
I also added "Brutal" mode for hardcore gamers who liked the original version of taking a beating, and also made that one slightly faster (I finished with 117 deaths :\ ). I'll post a proper write up on Feedback Friday after some better testing.
I need to thoroughly test this new slow-down mechanic so here it is! Have at it!
Thank you!
Do you mean Theme Park? Honestly, that is probably 1 - 2 years of full-time dev work for one person who has medium level experience in game design and decent programming skills.
Make a infini runner like flappy bird (no AI, not much level design, simple controls), or pong, or a tapping puzzle game. When I say extremely small, I mean infinitesimally small.
This took me about 6 months of weekends. Probably 2 months to get it running the way I wanted and the the basics of the assets, then 6 months of polishing and testing... Still not done :\

Finally chose a font that works throughout, and I’m mostly happy with the menu. Next is to fix the boss level bugs and some stage refactoring. Ninja star stages are nearly impossible, average 20 deaths per stage :\
Nearly done!

I thought the music was great. Worked perfectly for the spacey quirky feel.

Getting close to finishing this little game. I need to add a little more polish and play through. Decide on a message font/font system. Add one more mechanic which will give me 5 more levels and a boss, then add 5 more levels of extremeness. Throw a few more easter eggs in. Then I’ll be happy enough to let it float away.

I hope you enjoy it. It's a hard game but I really like it. I'm still finding it challenging after playing it hundreds of times, but I can 100% the game even if I die 50 times.

Feedback most wanted for:
There is more to come including, more mechanics (buttons, new enemies, new traps), levels, and a save/continue option. But I'm so happy I finally have an alpha on Google Play!!
Thank you for testing!

I have nearly finished with this project. I am not sure how much more time I want to sink into it. I really liked that answer Gabe gave in his AMA about how completing a game is more about accepting compromises, that has really made me take another view on combatting scope creep.
This game I have made is really hard and I’m ok with that. I think I will just finish off the polish, throw it out there and learn from my mistakes.

I'm not sure I understand. What part isn't free? I haven't paid anything so far and my game is set for release soon.

Ninja stars test levels Hi guys, I have created 5 test levels to test ninja star throwing enemies and a boss. Ninja stars DO NOT kill on impact like everything else, but instead knock you back hopefully bringing a new depth and feel to these obstacles. If a star hits you while you are rappelling/bungee-ing you drop, but NOT if it hits the rope, this seemed like a fair balance. It’s possible these levels will seem super hard if you haven’t played the regular game as they will be levels 21 - 25 and it's a little brutal by this point.
EDIT: The above has been added to the main game at levels 21 - 25
~~The "Ninja Stars test levels APK" below will replace the Google Play Alpha version, but it’s easy enough to change back using the “Google Play official alpha” link provided under it.~~

I have been travelling and then afterwards I hit a slump where I didn’t even want to look at a computer screen so the last two days of creating ninja star dudes has been great to get me back into it.
Feedback on the Google Play alpha would be great, or if you have played it then feedback on the 5 new levels featuring ninja star mechanics would be also great.
Thank you for testing, glad to be back!
EDIT: testing levels have been added to the Google Play Alpha at level 21 - 25
