For a very customizable sidebar: Everywhere Launcher
I actually have a Note 8 and still prefer this over Samsung's built in options. Many more options.
It can be overwhelming, the amount of customization, but it's really nice to be able to get a sidebar exactly how you want it.
What I expect from a side launcher is that it gets me fast from within any app to whatever app/shortcut/contact/whatever I want to get to. I've tried them all. Moved away from swipe pad some years ago and ended up with everywhere launcher. it's fluent and responsive, it's customizable and you can have up to 400 (ridiculously small) items on one page. 64 items though are easily usable on a 5 inches screen. Well worth the money.
The one recommended from xda surely has potential but it's buggy for me and it's not quite there yet. And while it's still actively developed, the development is very slow.
I'm sure people who want to theme anything and want widgets and contacts support in their sidebar will like my app as well, it's called Everywhere Launcher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appindustry.everywherelauncher). Just an alternative for those who want to try it
If you like having them both on, you can install Everywhere Launcher, honestly this is the one i could find that offers a lot of trigger. I use only one handle to navigate at right middle of my screen.
If you want specific apps to run with gestures, or navigation, or both. You can combine Everywhere Launcher with Tasker.
I'm not on samsung so i can't tell if the built in gesture has the option.
Check that one:

I'm currently using it while if I have a Samsung Galaxy device.
I don't even use that screen, I use a Recent Apps sidebar made by Everywhere Launcher. It just shows a row of icons across the bottom of my screen when pulled up.

I don't know of an app drawer widget. Have you tried a side launcher before? I have all of my apps one swipe away in https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appindustry.everywherelauncher
I use one of the features of Everywhere Launcher It has an app drawer and a bunch more.
Everywhere Launcher is gold and the developer is SUPER active, go grab it!
