There's an FTP server app on the play store. I just use that and copy things over the network. I think it cost .99 cents
Edit: found it! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv&hl=en
I've been using FTP for years now and it simply works. Fast, no dropouts, no special setups. I use this app but there are others. I use FileZilla on my Win and Linux clients to send files.
I've only ever used this, so I can't speak with experience on anything else: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv&hl=en_US&gl=US
But I've never had any issues using it. I only turn it on when I'm transferring things and otherwise leave it off. I use MozillaFTP as my Windows/Linux client.
Install this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv&hl=en_US&gl=US
And then use your favorite FTP client. Easy as pie, reliable and quick. I've been doing it since I got mine years ago.
Been using this setup for years now and it works great. For anyone looking to try it, here's a good app for the Shield:

I run the PMS on the ShieldTV. I have a Linux box running Sonarr and Radarr with Transmission as the torrent client. I manually move files from the Linux box to the external drive attached to my Shield with Mozilla as an FTP client. I recently installed another PMS on the Linux box and use that to stream to my buddy so his transcoding doesn't bog down my Shield.
I'm sure I could set this up better and improve the automation but I'm still adjusting the setup. But I've been using FTP for years to move files to the Shield. I use this FTP server on the Shield: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv&hl=en_US
I've been running FTP ServerPro TV (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv) since I first got the Shield over a year ago and it's survived several upgrades with no issues. I don't use SMB and instead use FTP to move my media on to my Shield's attached drives. I'm on the latest FW and still works.
I have been using this since day one and reinstalled it after I did a factory reset prior to Oreo. Still working great, though I only run it when I am actually going to do a transfer.

I've spent a bit money in play store to have Ftp Server Pro TV... then, when I need to transfer some files I just start the FTP server on the shield and use Filezilla on my laptop to get stuff done.
Not as convenient as a SMB server that reliably works on the shield, but I got tired of having to start it after every reboot, and having to keep plex updated manually.
Since I don't really use plex, I'd only notice something was wrong when I wanted to transfer, then I'd have to do all kinda yoga to get it up and running. Then it's easier to just launch an FTP server while I need it, and FTP seems to get better throughput than SMB (simpler protocol, less overhead).
Edit: I'm sure there are free alternatives to my choise of FTP server, it was simply the first one with full Android TV support and I had some play credit from doing those surveys.
FTP server, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv
Turn it on when you need it , turn it off when you don't
Make sure you go over all settings first.
You just need an ftp client on your pc.
I just got my Shield TV, and after seeing ES File Explorer recommended (and having used it previously on my phone), I spent 30 minutes trying to use it. It's baffling to use with a controller.
Installed ftp server instead: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv&hl=en
So now I can just manage files from my PC (via either directory opus or filezilla).
I use this application, sorry for my English, I only speak Spanish https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv
Use this link to install the FTP server from the web Play Store on your Shield.

you can enable smb v1 easily:

Also tried this FTP:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv
You will need to use a mouse or the nvidia shield app to set the external drive as the ftp target... and the sideload launcher to open it.

I'm waiting for the smb fix though, as it's my prefered method. Luckily we could also get smb v3 in an update soon.
I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverprotv&hl=en
It is $1 but it has been working well for me so far
