You have to set it to hide the icon, and by default it's *7777 dial to get in, but you can change that number.
Also, I strongly suggest its encryption setting. I don't know how strong it is, but I've found the unencrypted files (once located) are just getting placed elsewhere with a file extension change (though this made it real easy to recover some files after I simply cloned the files to my PC and wiped it for a CFW).
EDIT: Just to add, I'm not hiding anything from a girlfriend. I've always given my girlfriends access to this (when I had one), as usually at the time this is where nude photos/videos of them are stored (and ones I've sent them)... Though those photos periodically are encrypted and archived on my server, along with anything of past girlfriends (I've learned from dating crazy in the past to keep backups just in case, since they've got my junk on their phone... Luckily I've have never had to go that far.)
Oh, and another use I use it for is to hide images/folders that I don't want in the Gallery because they shouldn't be there. Like artwork with an album etc. I know editing the folder would be easy enough, but this just keeps a nice list of everything modified, and an easy way to undo any of it.
Use this app. You can save here pictures or videos, but don't forget to clear your download list in browser to be 100% clean.
Best thing in this app, that you can open it not only with app icon but with a "calling" to it... In short just read tutorials in this app to find best way to hide your secrets.

Ps. You still can see this app in your app list in settings, so of someone will try to delete it, he can notice it, so to be 100% safe I recommend to download this app to your own phone.
Apps like Gallery Lock will accomplish this with a little time spent setting it up.
